The Metal Slug influence should come as no surprise given four known prominent og Metal Slug devs worked on this game, specifically: Takushi Hiyamuta (producer), Shinichi Hamada (lead programmer), Yasuyuki Nakatsuka (programmer), and KOZO (2d graphic designer). It's also likely a few more had a hand in this but unfortunately many of the og Slug alumni (1-3 & X) are still only known by the pseudonyms they used so we may never know for sure. Either way, it's definitely more of a real successor to Slug than 4-6 were imo, which shared no staff from the originals. This game is why I'm not put off by the artwork for the upcoming Black Finger JET (the true Slug successor) they made the whole 2d/3d thing work brilliantly once before they can do it again, especially w/the legendary Meeher and Akio at the helm this time!
When this game was first released, my life was starting to get pretty busy with work, family, etc., and those years are a blur. So I didn't even find out about this game until fairly recently by videos like this stating it's greatness to the masses. For a hardcore Metal Slug fan like myself, this is an amazing spiritual successor to that franchise. When you hear "Dolphin Blue", the last thing to come to mind is a run & gun like this(or swim & gun if you prefer), but that's part of the magic, as this comes out of left field. Thanks for the video, as I'm sure this will be someone else 1st time seeing or hearing about this game and that's always a good thing.
I remember being amazed by this game the first time I played it, i think it was 2006, I've only seen it in the wild one time, but i fell in love at the first coin. I remember frantically looking for a port or emulators, but at the time even the roms werent yet dumped! I had to wait for years to play it again. Would never imagine at the time that the Atomiswave was actually a Dreamcast and so many years later, we would be playing it at home on real hardware
Dolphin Blue is a fantastic game VGE. I remember playing this in Chinatown in NYC and was so pressed by the way this was developed. Made me love the Atomiswave even more. 8^) Anthony...
This looks incredible. Take Metal Slug (of which I am a fan), add shmupiness (of which I am a fan), awesome music, add water and make a must play game. So long and thanks for all the fish.
This game is amazing. I always thought that Hard Corps: Uprising took inspiration from Dolphin Blue for its visuals. Very similar vibe with the 2D characters and 3D environments!
I love Metal Slug and I love aquatic stuff, so I was pretty excited when I saw this in the arcade. Defo a good game. PS: 1P's death scream sounds a lot like Tarma!
Awesome game, I like a lot ending twist if You finish game only as second player. Also it is very good news that atomiswave games are available on Dreamcast, it is like second live for those games.
I bloody love Dolphin Blue. I love the graphical style mash up, also. The walking animation is a bit naff, though lol. It's pure insanity that this has never had an official home port anywhere. Oh yeah, Sammy merged with Sega didn't they? They could licence this out to ININ or something, and put it out as a budget title. I'd buy it in a heartbeat. If Clockwork Aquario can be raised from the dead, then so can this! How well does this play on the Dreamcast? I recall hearing the frame rate suffers a bit.
VERY INTERESTING from the point of view of the port on the console! I would like to know in detail how they ported it unofficially to the dreamcast! All the same, Atomiswave (NAOMI) and DREAMCAST are similar, but in terms of architecture, Atomiswave (NAOMI) is more powerful due to the processing of polygons in the GPU processor directly on the DREAMCAST GPU-CPU combination.
@@VideoGameEsoterica my bad Atomiswave is what I got confused with. What is the difference out of interest as they are both dreamcast based as far as I know.
What is this, Nightboat? "Oh look a fjord". Just love that everything is water accessible.
Knight Rider on water. Dolphin is KITT 🤣

This. In the Hunt. Metal Slug. All one big family
I've played this and agree entirely with the commentary of the video, great game
It’s an easy game to talk about. All the great games are

Glad you finally found it at least :)
The Atomiswave ports on the Dreamcast are great. This is definitely one of the highlights
This is by far one of the biggest highlights
This is such a beautiful looking game! 🥰
Thanks for reminding me about this! 👍
That’s what I’m here for :)
First time I got to play this was at Galloping Ghost. I laughed so hard when I first jumped on the dolphin. It is a really fun game, I agree.
It’s pretty funny you get to ride a dolphin. Then again they use dolphins for war so…accurate?
This would have been a system seller for the Dreamcast for sure.
Sad it never came home properly but it’s super easy to play today

Yeah the conversions to Dreamcast were one of the most fun things to happen for Sega fans in the last couple years!
Such an awesome game, one of my favorite arcade games ever. Play it at Arcade UFO in Austin, Texas!
Glad to hear there’s a cabinet in the wild down in Texas!

Atomiswave is always great
This was the one other Atomiswave game I've desperately wanted to play and been hoping for a port for.
You can play it on Dreamcast

So long and thanks for all the fish.
Managed to get a Hitchhikers joke in there. Nice
Looks like a fun time! Although I will always prefer the drawn pixel style of Metal Slugs or Contra 3 for sure.
It’s def a diff art style but I think it works for this game
This game is amazing. I always thought that Hard Corps: Uprising took inspiration from Dolphin Blue for its visuals. Very similar vibe with the 2D characters and 3D environments!
This game is just legendary status
I love Metal Slug and I love aquatic stuff, so I was pretty excited when I saw this in the arcade. Defo a good game.
PS: 1P's death scream sounds a lot like Tarma!
Might be from a sound library. You never know
Wonderful game! It's highly recommended!
I give it a straight 10/10
Looks pretty fun. Definitely see the metal slug influence
100% easy to spot the influence. But they made it their own
Figures I only learn about this game until AFTER I’m dead! Gotta find. a way to move my stupid hands.
Looks harder than Metal Slug!
lolol what?
The opening scene Looks kinda similar to Ocean Hunter, very cool
Ocean Hunter will appear again next year :)

Yes so many more people will enjoy them on Dreamcast
@VideoGameEsoterica and we can play two unreleased fighting games too from that system on DC. I wonder will we see one day Chicago Chase?
Always wanted to play this.
Def play it. Its seriously a perfect game IMO. Hard as nails but 10/10 fun
@@VideoGameEsoterica If only my Dreamcast emulator didn’t keep resetting it…
Just use the Atomiswave version. On Demul or Flycast
@@VideoGameEsoterica I mainly use NullDC, so…
Worth switching for a game

Yes they became SegaSammy. Hence the Atomiswave connection
I literally just got a ripped this to a CD-R like an hour ago.
Haha good timing
Haha thanks
It’s funny how timing works sometimes

Megavolt85 THANK YOU
Atomiswave and Dreamcast are basically 1:1 identical
@@VideoGameEsoterica but unlike the NAOMI, the Atomiswave does not feature expanded RAM compared to the Dreamcast.
Correct
Picked up a nice repro copy for my dreamcast hoping for asian Dynamite at some point.
Asian Dynamite was NAOMI so doubtful that will happen
@@VideoGameEsoterica my bad Atomiswave is what I got confused with. What is the difference out of interest as they are both dreamcast based as far as I know.
NAOMI has an expanded spec. Mostly in the RAM dept. Atomiswave is basically 1:1 with a diff delivery format (carts)
@@VideoGameEsoterica Thanks for the info, much appreciated.
👍
Awesome game
Legit a classic
@@VideoGameEsoterica just played it. But it always freezes up on me, on super console xcube.
