When i had to ride in a car through Nevada to get to Las Vegas for cheap flights- i was shocked that i didn't see a single light for hundreds of miles....got out and saw the most amazing night sky. I never could have imagined there were that many stars visible....my life was somehow empty before and those two minutes gave it meaning and hope. Wish i could have stayed an hour or more but we needed to catch a plane and dad had to keep driving

When I was a little girl, I remember staring in awe at the amazing star filled sky in Morgan Hill, California. Millions of stars, all different sizes, far, far too many to even try to count. Beautiful. Made me think that my worries could all go away, even though I was five, as I thought how small I was and how small my problem was after seeing space.

Thanks for sharing what we've unwittingly lost. I always found this lyric from a James McMurtry song sad but poignant...
Mama used to roll her hair
    Back before the central air
We'd sit outside and watch the stars at night
She'd tell me to make a wish
I'd wish we both could fly
    I don't think she's seen the sky
Since we got the satellite dish...

I went to death valley on apr 19th this year, 5 days to the no moon day.
It was a clear sky, drove from hotel in Vegas to death valley, stayed there till 3:30 am in hope and there was a lot of light pollution from the hotels nearby and villages nearby.
I couldn't even see the stars properly. I have seen more stars from where i live in NC than in death valley. It was such a huge disappointment.
The whole reason for that trip was milky way in death valley.
Never hated moon more. I loved moon before that, but the moon ruined my star gazing that night.

Surprised you have Death Valley on this list. While it’s still relatively good, you get the light dome from Vegas to the east. Best place I’ve seen on the West Coast is the Great Basin National Park in eastern Nevada. Still as Dark as the west San Joaquin Valley was 50 years ago when I was growing up. My criterion is you can’t see your hand held out in front of your face on a moon less night.

Te Zero You see exactly what the google images look like (e.g. Milky Way, etc). BUT you really need to go when they have their “star parties” , check out the website for dates and to register. When I went I was blown away. Another time I went for a simple camping trip and didn’t quite see what I saw the other time. They have a bunch of observatories and red lighting. A lot of astronomers and enthusiasts go. Well worth it, and a lot of other things to do that are not too too far away like the pine creek gorge (PA Grand Canyon) or Penns cavern which you can take a 45 min boat tour through. I only mention these because I’m planning this trip for my gf and I in the near future lol
