Several years ago I replaced the CVT fluid on my 2006 Highlander Hybrid and filled from under the vehicle and ended up spilling about a 1/2 quart on my head and chest. It's time for another CVT fluid change so I'm going to be smarter and fill from the top as you show.
NOTE: If your HiHy has an oil cooler, you must do an extra step to finish filling the front transaxle per the factory manuals. If you don’t do this you will short fill the fluid (bad). You can check for an oil cooler - it’s the extra ‘radiator’ in front of the main radiator. Has lines to it from the engine that are much smaller than the coolant lines. How: Fill per this TH-cam, then put in fill plug. Then run the 2WD Inspection Mode for at least a minute - engine will run. Then check fluid level and add more. It took a few more pumps to finish filling it after doing this second step which ensures the oil cooler lines are filled. 2WD Inspection mode: Activating 2WD inspection mode (Not using the intelligent tester) Perform the following steps from (1) through (4) in 60 seconds. 1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. 2. Fully depress the accelerator pedal twice times with the transmission P position. 3. Fully depress the accelerator pedal twice times with the transmission N position. 4. Fully depress the accelerator pedal twice times with the transmission P position. 5. Check that the HV system warning light flashed on the multi-information display. 6. Start the engine by turning the ignition switch while depressing the brake pedal.
Thank you so much, that's the best information. I do appreciate you very much my friend. This information will help many people out there that perform the task themselves. 😊🙏
I have the same 2007 Toy Highlander Hybrid. There is also a transmission at the back or rear wheels. Is it the same process or do you have a video for that please? Tks
Is yours an AWD? If an AWD, then the back is just a transfer case for AWD. You can change the gear oil out for the rear. Most Highlander Hybrids are FWD and if it's AWD, then it will have transfer case. I hope this helps.
@nebhosspin1252 I would recommend 75W-90 gear oil for your rear differential fluid. Any brand will be ok or go with Mobil1. It should hold a one quart. When you are underneath at the rear differential. You should see a drain bolt at the bottom of the case and a fill port which has a bolt in it. Once drained, tighten the drain bolt and fill the new fluid in the fill port until the fluid runs out of the fill port, then you are done. Tight the fill port bolt and that's it. I hope this helps my friend.
Thanks again 6:06 . Do I have to replace the fluid for the front and transfer case of the rear at the same time? My worries is if I replace the fluid in the rear side only, it will also move the fluid from the front side to the rear when tilted, is it not?
@nebhosspin1252 you don't have to replace the fluid at the same time. Just get a little notebook and write down when you changed it and the milage of your car. AWD doesn't share the fluid from the front and the back. Both are independently. So no worries about the fluid moving to the front or to the back. 😊
@MrBeeHS yes mine is awd. And some people said I need to use same oil as the transmission oil? and can I ask you how big is the pipe for changing the transmission oil?
There is no transmission filter for this car and you should replace CVT transmission fluid every 30,000 miles. Welcome to my channel and thank you for subscribing to my channel. There will be more maintenance videos for the Highlander Hybrid in the future.😊
If you have been driving the vehicle for a while, let it sit about 2 hours or so before starting the procedure. The fluid will come out a little warm and it'll be ok.
My 2006 Highlander hybrid is starting to shift kind of hard every time I change from drive to reverse or anything like that. If the sealed transmission was leaking fluid and was low, could that be the cause of the rough shifts?
Check your engine and trans mounts. When those get worn, it lets the engine/trans move around more, especially noticeable when going into drive or reverse.
You are correct! Just like the manual transmission. There is no dip stick to check the level or the filter, only the filler screw and drain screw. You check the level just like the manual transmission.
You're welcome 🤗 The next video is going to be about how to replace the timing belt on it. It will definitely be very useful for your 2006 Highlander. 😊👍
There is no dipstick. It's a seal transmission...like the manual transmission. You can check the level on it by removing the fill bolt and the fluid level should be flush with the hole.
hello Am Mr Rashid from Tanzania please i want to ask a help,I have got toyota harrier 2005 hybrid when i start the car in idle abnormal sound came from transmition, when i drive the car in low speed sound came out but no sound came out when i drive in high speed. please i need your help
no, but i have decided to remove transmision for more diagnoses i have discover that there are two wires inter inside transmision ending at behind big coil one of them has cut off. is it can be a source?
Have a question, i thought the part your replacing look like the transfer case instead of Transmission oil, i am confused when viewing other video. so Please don't kill me thanks
Thanks you. So may I have couple more questions 1. I see there is another sort of pan next to it with drain bolt. What that is? 2. For the rear differential, I see that when I drain the old oil it was red color but the Valvoline 75w-90 is clear. Can you please help to explain?
You're welcome my friend. The pan that located next to the transmission is the engine oil pan. I believed that it was the original fluid from Toyota. Some rear differential fluid from Toyota on certain model uses ATF. But please confirm that with the Toyota dealership. They would be able to tell you the exact fluid that your year model used for rear differential.....I hope this help or at least guided you to the right path. 🙂🙏
The car IS on the ground level and I did said that the car should be level. If you notice in my video....the car was not jack stands and I released the floor jack. 👍

@MrBeeHS yes, my highlander is AWD. How do I perform a transfer case and what type of fluid?. Thanks

Where is the filter? I can’t find it
There is no filter for this vehicle my friend. All you have to do is drain and fill CVT transmission fluid.
Do I need to change the rear axle with the same oil? I heard that I need to change both thanks!
Is yours AWD?
On 4WD, rear axle fluid you can use is 75W-90 and yes you should replace the rear axle fluid as well on every 30k mile.
@MrBeeHS yes mine is awd. And some people said I need to use same oil as the transmission oil? and can I ask you how big is the pipe for changing the transmission oil?
No, your differential uses gear oil and it's not the same as transmission fluid. Your differential oil is 75W-90.
alright thankyou for answering!
You're welcome my friend 😊🙏
Nice. Is there a transmission filter and how often to replace? New sub.
There is no transmission filter for this car and you should replace CVT transmission fluid every 30,000 miles.
Welcome to my channel and thank you for subscribing to my channel. There will be more maintenance videos for the Highlander Hybrid in the future.😊
Thanks, I’ve been looking for the filter location like a mad man 🤯
I got the same 2007 highlander. I need to change the tires and tighten it. Can you tell me the torque wrench please, is that 35 ft lbs also? Thanks
It's 76 Ft-Lbs for the lug nut.
How cold should it be? Let it sit overnight before the procedure? assuming the ambient temperature isn't extremely cold.
If you have been driving the vehicle for a while, let it sit about 2 hours or so before starting the procedure. The fluid will come out a little warm and it'll be ok.
Thanks so much
You're very welcome.
No dipstick????thanks I have a 2006 Toyota Highlander hybrid is it similar?
It's a seal CVT transmission, no dipstick my friend. 2006 and 2007 is similar.
its easy like a manual transmission fill to spill
Correct 👍
My 2006 Highlander hybrid is starting to shift kind of hard every time I change from drive to reverse or anything like that. If the sealed transmission was leaking fluid and was low, could that be the cause of the rough shifts?
Yes and also the fluid might be old as well.
Check your engine and trans mounts. When those get worn, it lets the engine/trans move around more, especially noticeable when going into drive or reverse.
So this is like manual trasmision no filter or way to check the level just from butom off the car ???
You are correct! Just like the manual transmission. There is no dip stick to check the level or the filter, only the filler screw and drain screw. You check the level just like the manual transmission.
Tanhk you sir i will check for next time you put new videos i just buy one 2006 just like that one really help you videos 🙏
You're welcome 🤗
The next video is going to be about how to replace the timing belt on it. It will definitely be very useful for your 2006 Highlander. 😊👍
How ro you check it without draining it ? Is there a dip stick ?... couldn't find one
There is no dipstick. It's a seal transmission...like the manual transmission. You can check the level on it by removing the fill bolt and the fluid level should be flush with the hole.
@@MrBeeHS thanks for the info

Have you service your transmission?
no, but i have decided to remove transmision for more diagnoses i have discover that there are two wires inter inside transmision ending at behind big coil one of them has cut off.
is it can be a source?
Maybe it was rubbing against the metal? Or maybe the previous mechanic service your transmission and cut it off by accident.
ok, let me fix it i will inform you
thanks
@rashidnaftali5409 thank you, keep me posted my friend.
Have a question, i thought the part your replacing look like the transfer case instead of Transmission oil, i am confused when viewing other video. so Please don't kill me thanks
It's the transmission fluid from the transmission. It's a front wheel drive car so there is no transfer case. I hope this cleared your question. 😊
Thanks you. So may I have couple more questions
1. I see there is another sort of pan next to it with drain bolt. What that is?

👍
Thanks bro
Should be filled on level ground
The car IS on the ground level and I did said that the car should be level. If you notice in my video....the car was not jack stands and I released the floor jack. 👍
@@MrBeeHS Ok my bad didn’t see it in the video 👍. Do you know if this is the same for 2012 highlander hybrid?
All good my friend.
2012 should be similar but not exact because 2012, I believe it's the 2nd GEN, if it's equipped with CVT transmission.
