I first learned of Johnny Clegg as a fellow anthropologist when I was working in Easr Africa. I only learned years later that he was also one of the great heroes of our time. Some artists who create great music become rich and live mostly as wealthy celebrities. Johnny did become rich and famous because he wrote and performed great music that not only respected what he learned from Zulu street musicians but he sang it in multi-racial bands. But the greatest thing he did was mobilize his art and send it into battle against apartheid. You fought the good fight Johnny.
Again I find myself here, Saturday afternoon, and you are gone Johnny, resting with your brothers, you were a massive part of my life, I cannot begin to describe how you touched me with your music and your life story, you are a true legend for South Africa, I wish you were allowed to play many more concerts in your own country, as you fought against Apartheid, instead you traveled the world and spread your incredible word, music, lyrics and dance. And now you stand here with your son, singing your last concert. You will always be in my house, heart and I will never forget you. Thank you, Johnny.
Hundreds of concerts, thousand songs, none moved me more than seeing Johnny and Jesse Clegg singing "I've been looking" at the Boulder Theater in November 2017. Thank you Johnny for being the soundtrack to so many great moments in my Life.

Johnny Clegg changed my perception of South Africa,music,life,and a determination that we are all equal no matter what colour skin we live in.
