  • What's up, folks! I'm back with another Tears for Fears reaction, and this time we return to Roland's album Elemental (1993) for "Mr. Pessimist." This song is yet another masterpiece, with some of the most rich and sublime synth-work I've ever heard. And that's only one reason the sonics in this one are so fantastic!
Admittedly, I didn't get a full sense of the lyrical themes, partly because I was indeed focusing on the musical side, but also because Roland's voice is such that I typically require a couple listens to start hearing the lines clearly.
Regardless, join me as we listen to a brilliant track from Elemental. Cheers!

"Time will swallow your precious time
    Like magic create the future"
What a set of lyrics! A song Roland wrote thinking about what he dislikes about pessimism. What about our nature, throughout time, "...makes a man so fickle? Who put those daggers in those eyes?" The lyric toward the end you wondered about: "Listen Mr. Pessimister with your Catholic taste...we do not relate." My favorite line in the whole song is "I get all mixed up. think I'm all mankind." I really do think Roland feels that way sometimes.
Musically this song is just mesmerizing. Shout started out as a motif that Roland thought would just repeat, like a mantra. It then got layered and built up into the final Big Chair version, thanks especially to keyboardist and co-writer Ian Stanley. This song is like that, too. The synth parts that keep repeating, the bass part is so cool. And all the touches of piano! When you said "jazz from another planet," what a perfect description. This sounds like nothing else. Roland has said that making this album was easier compared to previous albums. It was mainly him along with Alan Griffiths, working in his own home studio, having control over things. But, still the perfectionist, he digitized the piano bit at the end of this song. After he had improvised it, he said he could never play it again the same way, it's "like jazz," so he entered it into the computer. You gotta love Roland!

Orzabal is a revolutionary of pop music. Using a musical base, he revolutionized the concepts of good music. He always produced a better product than the previous one, maintaining that quality base. Orzabal a genius and revolutionary of music

My favorite line is, "Will the heat stick and blister?"
Roland has a solo album out under his name called Tomcats Screaming Outside. It's worth checking out too when you're done with the TFF catalogue.

This is one of my favorite songs in the Tears for Fears catalog. It sounds different from their other songs and has its own sort of mystical, hypnotic, dark mood. I love the descending piano line and the synth, as well. I love your description as "jazz from another planet;' I completely agree. Another song that I feel has a similar vibe to it is from Roland's solo album from 2000. The song is called 'Day by Day by Day by Day.'

It's such a pleasure listening to TFF tracks with you Matt. It's like having someone else to appreciate the genius that Orzabal is. It's like being led down a maze of rabbit holes, finding unfound treasures in his lyrics and stumbling across a layer of music you havent heard before, even though you've listened to it a hundred times!
I've always thought Mr Pessimist was a Talk Talk pastiche, a nod to Mark Hollis who used this dreamy synth style on their 1986 Colour of Spring album (what an amazing album to get lost in).
Fantastic analogy you make "I feel like I'm listening to jazz from another planet" 😀
    Beautiful track, so, so underrated.
    Masterpiece is right Matt.

Probably would have never heard this song if it wasn’t for you Matt ,thanks again for bringing this song and a few others to my attention as big of a fan that I am of Tears for Fears sometimes you get stuck on the popular songs and never discover songs like this ,I knew a few songs from this album but Roland is just a Legend plan and simple, if there is anyone I look up to in the music industry it’s definitely Roland. Thanks again Matt

Mr Pessimist would be my favourite track on this album, if it wasn’t for the ridiculously glorious Brian Wilson Said, the harmonies on BWS are a homage to the Beach Boys, the song is something special.

When this album appeared on the market, it was previously broadcast by a radio station in Chile that only played progressive rock (Pink Floyd, Rush, EL&P, Yes, among others). I didn't understand in 1993 why an alternative radio station in my country was launching an album by a pop music band as a premiere. Over time I understood. The radio DJ understood that "Elemental" was not a simple album of commercial music.

My first time tuning in to your channel, so happy to see someone react to this incredible song. Tears for Fears are one of my very favorites and I absolutely love this album, I play it all the time, as well as Raoul and the Kings of Spain, which has the same kind of brilliance. I'll have to go back and check out your other reactions. If you haven't heard it yet, Goodnight Song, the last on this album is my favorite. Great reaction!

It's another great track and indicative of why I always reach for this album. This song, in parts, also reminds me quite heavily of early 90's Simple Minds songs from the albums 'Real Life' and 'Good News from the Next World'.

@@mattsnider2667 Yeah they're still on the go like the Duran boys. At one point they were as big as U2 worldwide and known for their stadium tours. Their speciality is what I like to call 'wall of sound music'. Once you start getting towards the end of the Duran catalogue, I can stick the Simple Minds albums into your folder.
