Well said, friend. At the beginning, he was on top of the world. Everybody loved him (except maybe his wife), and it seemed like he couldn't stop smiling. But then cut to this scene, and he's in the back of an almost empty theater. No smile. No love. Just a man quietly realizing that the times had passed him by. And then there's Peppy crying as George's character sank into the quicksand. But you knew that part of those tears were for George himself.
George Valentin was so developed as a character in this film that I seriously cried when he fell in the quicksand at the movie premiere -- even though I knew it was just a movie, inside another movie. Very few films can develop characters that well. Truly masterful film-making, this deserved every bit of Best Picture.
I knew it reminded me of something! It's that little cascade about halfway through, definitely inspired by Arabesque. Thanks, I wouldn't have copped it otherwise :)
Ravel and Debussy overall, but totally agree with you, this is a perfect soundtrack, it's not supposed to be a great piano piece from the classical music repertoire.

The tears started shedding within the first few 30 seconds! This song is so powerful and the film simply fantastic!
