I predicted Figma AI would try to replace us (but here's what to do)

- About a year ago, I said that Figma would use cloud data to train its AI model. At the time, no one blinked. However, now that Figma has announced their new AI features, the entire industry has been shook. Figma is only going to be innovating more ways to replace human labor (AKA you + me). So here are my strategies to staying ahead of the game.

I have something to add, or perhaps more of a question to the swarm intelligence here, regarding what Lily had said. The advice is very sound, but what about people who're starting out? What should they do, what if they don't understand the complex problem? If you look around the job market, and also seeing some of the most recent content about Software Development, you'd see this trend of "Where did all the Entry-Level job go?"
With the way AI is being marketed, there doesn't seem to be a way for the younger generation to do any entry-level job in order to grow and then develop themselves. It seemed like as though people need to be a Senior Engineer/Designer right as they enter the job market for the first time...
@@laid-backmonster1881 No easy answers here. But if I had to do it again and I was sure product was for me, I'd get really good at skills in visual and prototyping so I can execute whatever is needed. Juniors as a level is meant to execute anyways. Eventually you'd work your way up to complex product problems.
This is happening across all industries especially the creative fields. Creatives have been encouraged to share their work online for years and without realising it, our work has been used to train AI. I've seen a lot of tech bros gleeful at graphic designers, artists etc being 'replaced' by AI which I found sad and disappointing, why anyone would want artists and creatives replaced by technology I have no idea. AI should be used to replace menial jobs, not creative jobs. I'm not sure what the future will look like at this rate but there are some serious ethical issues with people's work being fed into AI without their knowledge or consent, I would like to see this changed. AI should be a tool for people not something to replace us.
If you're good at what you do. AI won't replace you. Clients will always need a person and if they don't, you don't want them as your clients anyway. Don't be afraid of AI in design, a lot of it is shit anyway and to be honest, it's only good as a launchpad for a project. Just do your best and learn to utilize AI but don't rely on it because at the end of the day, your skills will carry you.
We will be fine, optimist here. As long as we advocate for research and user testing.
Do you have a source around how Figma is training their AI on users work? They've explicitly said they don't train on customer data, except around Figma-specific concepts and tools (which sounds like workflow improvements tbh). Regarding their 'make designs' features, my understanding is that they created a component library with the nature of the content filled in from commodity LLMs.. this is really just a fancy version of lorem ipsum, with a few workflow optimizations baked in. I feel like this video is not truthfully representing the facts here.
Personally I'm much more concerned about the impact of Ligma AI on the field.
great channel, personally I use my JS / CSS skils in my saas product design job to prototype complex features, but to escape the usual jobs , I am studying to become an animation content creator( mostly without AI as it generates crappy output ) there is flexibility and free will, you don't have to be a product designer forever, it can be a useful but temporary career , a stepping stone towards something more grandiose, ambitious
@@javiertrevino5535 I feel like I’m headed in the opposite direction - animation feels right in the sights of AI haha - but if you’re technical enough, I think anyone will survive. You need to know how the bits fit together and why.

I predicted something like this 10 years ago when everything and all services started moving on the cloud. I wasn't thinking about AI, but I could see the room for tirany ir was creating. And it makes sense now "You'll own nothing and be happy."
Do you have a source that Figma used user data? that was not what was claimed at all, we have to opt out aug 15

Love your channel! Glad you have a job. Sounds like it's over for people who are intermediate/new to it.
- We always had the option to get and use Figma UI templates made by the designers community. This is not much different.
- This field has been toxic and depressing for the last 5 years, like no other, in many aspects. Might be a relief to change it when time comes.
Should I drop out of cs and switch to healthcare? I'm only one semester in so I can easily switch. It seems like tech is way to saturated, easily outsourcable, and ai is soon to replace many in this field. What are your thought?
@@ripsky7586 Is healthcare less saturated? It does seem like AI could easily replace workers in other industries as well? I'd say pursue something you can reach top 10%

hey there, im a ux designer and I am currently in a Radiologic Tech program. I decided to make a career change back in january since there is good job stability + pay, not to mention that you are able to help people everyday. healthcare is a field that is always in demand and offers more hands on people focused work. so if you enjoy technology but you dont mind a career dealing with patients, it could be a great fit for you. but at the end of the day it depends on what you're interested in and where u see yourself thriving.

I'm a software dev with a few years under my belt, and I live in Europe (specifically Germany).
Don't think of it this way just because "tech is saturated, easily outsourceable and AI is doom and gloom". There's a recent video by Primeagen where he polled his chat regarding the fear of AI replacing their Dev jobs. Tbf, the fear seems to be in people who are either new in tech, or relative beginners in the field. The experienced and senior engineers do not have this fear, but do see it as a possibility with a metric ton of skepticism, at least with how AI is being marketed (I like using Bing every now and then). Lily is right, you are there to solve complex problems, and that's why engineers don't have this fear as much, cause we know AI just isn't there yet. (I'd give it another 10 years or so)
That being said, me living in Europe, can tell you that healthcare, especially nursing, is REALLY needed here. Teachers too! And it takes a long time to build new blood to take over the retiring teachers, nurses and doctors. The problem here is, the job is just not being paid enough, and people here experience burn out. And in 10 years time, I would wager we really have a problem in our hands there, and AI won't save us there.
If you're a people kind of person, then the switch could work. The problem is only that it will take a looooooooooong time until you see it bear fruit.

I don't think it's designed to be straightforward, otherwise why would users have to opt out in the first place?
Go to your team > View settings > Manage AI settings
you can opt out if you're using premium, but if you use it for free...forget it, delete your profile lol

Side note: I actually do not like using Figma. I prefer Sketch. I only started using Figma because it's what everyone else was using. However, after a year of using it I still miss Sketch and will probably go back.

AI is taking over my job and now I am using AI to try to get a living out of it.
The world is becoming a lonely and scary.
A designer profession should not be measured by the tooling they use. If you think a UI generator will take your job you are already doomed. Stop being a pixel pusher.
A designer is more much than that. Figma won't be able to led the design vision of a product you are working in, pitch designs to leadership and coordinate with REAL people to make things happens, work with constraints, understand the business intricacies, manage a large scale project ... just to mention a few points.
You need to level up you game with new technology and skills? Yes. That's always been the case for everyone that works in tech.
I don't think an AI can steal my job or do it better than me. The thing is, companies are the ones thinking they can replace their workers with AI tools 😅
I think your comment is for the designers of 10 to 15 years ago. Companies are looking for pixel pushers who can make them moneyas opposed to designers that look at design as a craft.
@@lydia-roseaigbedion6025 This will depend on each individual's working experience, not necessarily about X years. I think designers are being trained poorly these days. Everyone is leaning too much towards visual design skills/UI production (super essential but not enough). This is the wrong mindset; we should not be solely pixel movers. When working for a company, we should think more holistically how we partner with other functions and the business.
I am not sure about companies only looking for pixel pushers. If that is the case, they are either small/startups or have a huge misconception about the design function.
@mozarellaguru the 10 to 15byear referes to actual time and not howmany years of designe experence somebhad. 10-15 years ago the market was more open to an extensive design process. But I disagree with your training statement. I think designers are being trained for the market of today. And while some places still priorize the holistic design process many don't or are turning away from it to meet expectations, get numbers, and stay on trend. Also I would argue that designers of today can only be good at the market/company/client allows.
