The policy itself is fine because it's supposed to apply at checkout and not whenever people enter the store. What's stupid is the manager for arguably not being able to read.

Meanwhile, I used to go buy beer and wine in many local stores for my mother, for many years when I was a minor in my country (18). Here we don't have licenses/permits for establishments, just a fine if someone with legal power bother to.

No, it's not. You can't buy alcohol if even ONE person with you is underage. Even if it's your own newborn baby. It's the law, and it's that way for a damn good reason.

Reminds me of when I was a kid staying over with my dad. I think we were going swimming, stopped at a BP for pop and for my dad to get a couple Redd's.
Babyface kinda runs in my dad's side of the family, me and my dad both age pretty well. But at the time I was literally a kid. So the cashier cards my dad, then tries to card *me!* I guess she thought my dad and I were a couple?? (horrible) Never mind the fact that I wasn't even in high school and my dad was already in his 30's. I forget what exactly my dad said verbatim, but he replied to her something along the lines of "Her ID?? That's my daughter, she's 13 fuckin' years old!"
Afaik the store had no policy, and my home state has no law about minors not even being allowed with you. It was such a bizarre experience.

The second story makes me remember my 21st birthday. I went to a bigger, better known liquor store and tried to check out, they told me they wouldn't sell me anything because my ID expires on your birthday in my state. I had looked up the relevant laws and I was waiting to turn 21 before renewing because licenses under 21 had that written on them in big red lettering and the picture background was red instead of blue. The law says that the ID was valid until end-of-day and I was scheduled to renew the next day. So, legally, I was 21, but my ID said under 21. The nice liquor store denied me, even though my ID was legal and showed me as 21. The small, less fancy liquor store I found was great. I got drinks and the guy even gave me a single-shot bottle for my birthday. I frequented that store until I moved away.

    Me: Um...yes, it is me.

I didn't look that much different though, but there were so many instances, mostly at one store in particular with the same cashier every time, where I'd have to dig around in my purse for a hair tie and my glasses case to prove that it was me on the ID. I made sure to have my hair down in my renewed license photo.

The lady looked at my ID and said it didn’t look like me (I had gotten a haircut and it’s been 8 years) and that I should get a new one. Then she asked if I was using my cousins ID. She was being pretty mild about it, she was obviously still giving me the beer but I was tired and just wanted to go home. I just looked at her and said, “the only cousin who looks like me is dead” took the beer and left. Like lady, if I was going to use a fake ID it wouldn’t say I was 30 nor would I admit to it. Plus, I am not sitting through the DMV and going through the hassle of getting a new license because I got a haircut.

So my BFF used to work right next door to a liquor store. She drank alot of whiskey & vodka, and I used to enjoy cheap wine. She never got her license so I used to pick her up all the time. Often we'd grab booze from next door, either together or I'd just go before grabbing her.
Now to be fair, we both looked young. I'm in my late 30's now but people still guess me in my late teens/early 20's. So I try to always keep my ID on me because I always get carded.
But we came in so often that the owner (dude in his 60's at least) knew us both by name and knew we were well over 21 so he often didn't card us, even when I had my card in my hand. So eventually I stopped bringing every single time.
So one day I go in by myself. I cheerfully say 'hi' and grab my wine. I go up to pay and he goes to check me out. Suddenly his wife- a fat angry Karen (well before the meme but she had the haircut and everything) and screams at him to STOP.
She says there is no way I'm over 21. I said I was closer to 30 than to 21. I pointed out that her husband knew me by name and in fact had my b-day memorized. But he just shrank, sad and embarrassed and mumbled he couldn't complete the sale.
I even offered to get my ID as I had just left it in the car. NOPE. Apparently Karen thinks that if you don't have it on your person that it doesn't count.
It wasn't even the weird rule she was making. Like I would've got it (kinda) if she had been apologetic but firm. Like 'I'm sorry but rule XZY states we just can't do it." But it was her ATTITUDE. She was mean, insultimg and called me a liar and a little girl. She legit was NUTS.
So last time I ever bought ANYTHING there. Pretty sure they wen't under shortly after. Wonder why?

Since I've been working retail, a local store from a big grocer chain got stung by the cops near the end of last year.
Due to this, a good portion of stores big and small, chain or not have changed their policies regarding alchohol and cigarettes. Everyone is requiring ID regardless of age, the idea being that if you check everyone, there is less of a chance you'll let someone underage by, or simply be aware that someone has a marked ID with a court order not to serve them alcohol.
Our store in particular requires anyone that makes a purchase of alcohol/tobacco products to show their ID and if their party, ie. someone that is obviously with them (walks with them into the store, interacts with them, and keeps up with them), touches anything alcoholic, they have to show their ID as well.
If that party leaves before checkout, regardless whether or not they grabbed something for purchase by the main buyer, we can't sell to them as long as the party was touching things before they left.
We've had so many people get pissed off by this policy, but not much we can do about it since we have camera's on us 24/7 and many of us have already been reprimanded for not following through on policy. It did however catch a father/son duo in that the son went around and grabbed a lot of things left and his dad tried to pay for it. The son was underage... so yay I guess. We caught one person and pissed off everyone else.

On my birthday, late this summer, that license expires. It is suspended, but the computers don't check that when buying alcohol (One would be surprised at how often a 52 year old man with a beard gets carded!). I've just applied to renew my passport. I have heard (don't know if it's true), that if you go to every divorce lawyer in your area in an attempt to create conflicts of interest preventing your spouse from using them, it really pisses off any judge if they figure out what you did. So it may be counterproductive to do this.

Everyone in the comments seem to be going after the manager in the wine story, but letting the cop off the hook despite the fact that he was equally obnoxious. The captain might have been joking, but I think he should have told his officers to stop blocking people’s driveways period. Also, forty five minutes for a routine traffic stop? WTF??

Story 1: Conflict of interest. Yes. Have to hire another lawyer: Not necessarily. Several years after my divorce, I got a call from a lawyer I had consulted but who had not handled my divorce. My ex was consulting him. I laughed. I could waive that it was a conflict of interest so the lawyer could represent my ex. I waived it, since I knew he didn't have a case. I still won.

I work at Total Wine and this was a total power trip from that store!
Yes, it sucks, but if you all look under 30, we have to check the ID of everyone in the party at checkout (not at the door like that dumb store). It's a policy to make sure that the person buying isn't going to give the wine to the underage person at checkout with you. And if one person doesn't have a valid ID on them, then we have to deny purchase until they can produce one (how can we prove you're old enough otherwise?). Of course, if the underage person is clearly a child with their parent/guardian, then we won't check the child. Our policy also states that if a person is 21-22, we need a manager to help authorize the purchase because it's common for underage kids with fake IDs to bump up their age to that age range.
It was a total power trip from that store to deny purchase because a stranger walked in with them! I'm appalled! The store I work at, luckily isn't as power-hungry. It's hilarious to think how the manager scrambled every which way to gather the wine just to put them all back again lol!

I can understand why some retailers are gun shy about sales of alcohol to anyone who looks young. If you work retail alcohol sales and have been ticketed by local police or state alcohol a second infraction can cost you employer or you a big fine. So people get paranoid and make stupid decisions.

In the wine story, the manager pointed out that the person who arrived with op had checked out 30 minutes before op and left. So, why wasn't op asked to show her i.d. when that person checked out if they were assumed to be together? Did they not i.d. that person at all? If so, they wouldn't have needed to check it when op checked out.
It sounds like the cashier had a problem with op.

The few times I've heard this story I've taken it to mean that person walked out without buying anything, otherwise it'd be even more obvious they had something against OP
But tbh I don't even understand that policy, because it would only stop the stupidest people who go in together and the underaged person just points to what they want, when they could just go in first, take pictures of what they want, send them to the person buying and leave, then the other person can come in and get it, so even if you wanted super specific stuff it really wouldn't be that hard to circumvent id laws nowadays
