I was in Dr Barnardo's Homes from the age of 7 in 1952 until I joined the RAF in September 1960. Two of the boys at the home I was in went to Oz and went willingly, thinking it a great adventure, poor kids. Now we know the truth but only part of it and it's appalling, shameful and a massive ineffaceable blot on our country's history. I was actually tempted to go when I was about 10 years old, luckily for me I was talked out of it.
My great grandfather was sent out from England as a ten year old by himself, he was taken from a traveller family in England's New Forest. He said that they lived in tents and were dirt poor but happy.
Thank you for sharing your school project on Child Migration. You have touched on many issues amongst which is for respective Government of the day to show remorse for their uncaring foreign policy.
