    I think something that the show didn’t make very clear is that up until this point, the Northern and Southern Water Tribes are both under the SAME RULE under the same water tribe chief. Both are one NATION separated by distance. However, after the 100 yrs war, the Southern Water Tribe developed its own culture and customs which is why - as you will see in the next two episodes, there’s a clash.

    - If you look at how Korra Airbends... she *punches* it -- like Firebending....
    You never see Aang, or Tenzin, Tenzin's kids, or Roku punch with Airbending...
    It's always a flat, open palm...
    Korra's Airbending style reflects her aggressive nature...
    Even her Waterbending is more aggressive than normal...

      I wouldn't characterize it as "Korra Korra just punches and bending happens" any more than "Zuko just punches and bending happens".... they both punch when bending....
      - the odd thing about Korra is that the airbenders we've seen up until that point typically don't punch when they're bending.... they typically have open-palmed thrusts, swipes, or chops.... and Korra's style is more similar to firebending.... which makes sense.... she tends to favor firebending....
      - You can say "that's not how that works", but clearly that's what's happening... there's no rule that it can't happen.... and also punches have been used in bending since the original series... so saying "Only in LoK do they do that" just doesn't match up with what we see....

      @@The5armdamput33 zuko does northern shaolin kung fu. Aang does bagua kung fu. Katara does tai chi.
      The specific movement and form, combined with spiritual attunement to that element, is what bends it. Not punching.
      Katara didnt push and pull the water with random hand gestures. She needed a specific stance and specific movement in that stance to activate the push and pull. Become water. Just punching doesnt bend it. Just punching isnt becoming water.
      Thats the point. And if u missed that then u didnt watch or pay attention to atla.

    Spartan forgot when Katara literally fought tradition and became one of the first trained female water bending warriors. Northern tribe would only let women train in healing before Katara fought back. If anything, she’s against tradition. So it makes sense that the south is progressive and the north is trying to revert to traditional values. You see a similar trend in the US rn.

    • @gabiayad1266
      @gabiayad1266 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      The south is also fully rebuilding from the ground up after being pillaged by the Fire Nation for 100 years so they've lost touch with A LOT of tradition and cultural knowledge. She would have been heavily invested in guiding her people, not a storm of unknown origin on the outskirts of civilization. Since it is spiritual in nature, it also would have been more of an Avatar concern, but as we know, Aang spent a lot of time prioritizing the United Republic and traveling the world with Tenzin. A storm in the middle of nowhere that wasn't harming anyone probably wasn't high up on his to-do list.

    IMPORTANT MOD MESSAGE SPECIFIC TO LEGEND OF KORRA- READ BEFORE POSTING:
    ************************************************************************************
    If you want to say you dislike or like it WITHOUT going into specific details that's fine, but traditional spoiler rules apply for LoK. We must maintain BLIND reactions and opinions for the Legend of Korra content, just as we did with ATLA. That is what people are paying and watching these for.
    We are well aware of the heavy debate about these two shows. Please keep the ATLA vs TLOK debate and controversies to our community LoK discord channel AND ONLY THAT CHANNEL. We want those paying for Korra reactions to have an enjoyable time within the community and throughout this experience, and not have to sift through a bunch of hostile and aggressive debating or attacking the show. It just ruins the vibe and the fun, and if enough of it occurs it can also color S&P's reactions and cause them to be less natural, the very thing we are here for.
    Thank you!

    • @TimberlakeTigerGirl
      @TimberlakeTigerGirl ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't think Yue had any siblings. My guess is either her father had to sire another heir after Yue became the moon spirit. Or he didn't and upon his passing, the next closest male relative became chief.

    • @TheMuddySea
      @TheMuddySea ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, it's never really explained. All we know is that about 50 years after the events of ATLA, the chief of the Northern Water Tribe was Tonraq and Unalaq's father, but my personal head canon is that Yue's father may have had a younger brother who took over as chief after him, and this is Korra's grandfather.
      This would make Korra and Yue first cousins once removed.
      Either that, or Han took over as chief and Korra is related to him 😳

    @SpartanandPudgey Love your reaction videos to LoK!!
    Basically, Korra gets angry w Mako here when he talks w her dad to keep an eye on her for the same reason she gets angry a lot during this episode (and others). You see, Korra is a fierce protector, it's her whole arc. That's what her personnality is, that's what she does.
    So, when her dad, Tenzin and in this season Mako constantly try to 'protect' her by basically surveiling her and keeping her out of things, she can't stand it. First bc she wants to be the avatar, she wants to fight all those battles, that's what she was always meant to do: it's her persona. And second, bc she's a protector, she wants to help, and she also got that protector pride so when they try to 'protect' her, Korra hates it, bc she doesn't want to be taken care of, she wants to be the one to take care of people.
    To her, what Mako and her dad keep doing, is also seen as not believing in her, not believing that she can be the protector she was always meant to be (by both her persona and being the avatar). So, not only is it invalidating her personal identity, but also her avatar self and it is also belittling her, which ends up hurting her pride as well on top of the rest.
    All of this will culminate in the beginning of season 4, where she'll be powerless and humbled bc of that, and will learn to accept other people's help. But it is hardest at that moment in the show for her bc she's in no state to protect anyone, that's why she's going to try and fight again and again to regain her physical abilities, bc it is completely tied to her sense of self as a protector.
    So yeah, it really gets under her skin what Mako does in this season bc he tries to become her protector, when everyone knows she doesn't need protection (I mean she's the avatar and a prodigee), she may need help and counsel from time to time, like anyone does, but she can perfectly take care of herself. Mako (her dad in s2 and sometimes Tenzin s1 & s2) is not a good match (romantically) for Korra at all bc of this. He's also a protector bc he's had to care for Bolin his whole life. Then he tries to do that w Korra except she's not a kid like Bolin was, and she is far from defenseless (i mean she is stronger than all of them, by far).
    Plus, in season 2, Korra is 18, so as an adult it is even worse to have people trying to hold her back, bc that's essentially the consequence of Mako/Tonraq's behavior towards Korra here. She's trying to find her role and place in the world as Korra and as the avatar, but she can't do that bc she's constantly being held back or belittled by these two men in her life.
    Not to say she's right everytime, but it seems when you reacted that you thought Korra was being dramatic or ridiculous, but it really isn't the case. Her personnality and freedom is constantly being denied by the people closest to her so of course she gets pissed by that, a lot (plus she's hot-headed).

    My initial impression of this season’s set up was that it very much mirrored season 1’s set up. I was suspicious of Unalaq the same way I was with Tarrlock, seemingly good guy way too interested in Korra, saying all the right things. I immediately question those characters motives.
    And also both of them forcing mistrust between Tenzin in S1 and her dad in S2. I always trust the characters that have her best interest at heart over the brand new characters that she thinks are right.

    1:32 You are kind of missing a small bit of the script here. The traditions weren't lost during peacetime, they were lost during the 100 years of war and the southern water tribe never quite recovered the full extent of their lost culture that was burned away when the tribe nearly went completely extinct. Doubtless Katara and the northern tribe helped the best that they could, but even if it's to restore their old ways, too much outside interference could have been seen as a second invasion and might have been resisted.

    Good comment in your introduction about Katara! Spoiler alert for the comics:
    When the Hundred Year War began, the Northern Water Tribe built the ice wall and stopped visiting/communicating with the Southern Water Tribe. This was when the South started losing some of their traditions because they just needed to focus on survival during the War. So when the war ended the North began helping rebuild it, but they wanted to do more than rebuild. I won’t go too much into it but this is where tensions began between the North and South. Katara actually did try to keep the Southern traditions alive as much as possible, but progress gets away from us sometimes.

      It's hard not to think of ATLA when this series continually hits the viewer over their head with it - heck, even the title of the show starts with the words: "Avatar: The Last Airbender" and the title scene has a giant statue of Aang literally overshadowing Korra. There are so many flashbacks and memories of the ATLA crew, some make appearances (even after they're dead!), we get the offspring of the ATLA crew and even voice acors return. The makers of Korra have clearly make great efforts to ensure that people make connections with ATLA, so it's not a valid criticism IMO.

      ew.. instead of people learning bending thru training, discipline and study they are all just given bending and use it like a magic power.. the "avatar spirit" is just a white carpet. avatar state is just using rava? they took all the best things about the avatar and ruined it with those episodes

    • @BobGnarley.

      @@johnnyboro9558 that is literally how bending began. how do you expect them to train that "magic power" without being given it. Even Aang was "given" his magic power.. he was born the Avatar, he didnt go out and learn how to become the Avatar.
      Also they literally do train it - that is the whole point of the episodes lol.. learning to survive.
      if you dont like the origins of bending you dont like Avatar.

      @@BobGnarley. i like the origins of bending in ATLA, before LoK ruined it. you know, like how Yue said water benders learned by studying the moon and feeling it's pull. fire benders came from the sun warriors who watched the dragons fire bend. air nomads and the sky bison. earth benders and the mole badgers. i prefer that to a lion turtle bestowing magical powers.
      and no, they "literally" don't train at all. when Wan gets fire bending he just punches the air and a massive fireball comes out. even he is surprised by it. he gets air bending and starts punching massive streams of air. you call that training? you call that cool? ok.
      "he didn't learn to become the avatar" that's such a stupid thing to say, the whole point of the avatar is they can bend all 4 elements and bridge the spirit world and material world. he was born with the ability as the spirit incarnation of the planet (not anymore, now the avatar spirit is a white carpet named RAVA) but he certainly didn't know how to be the avatar. which made for a much more interesting story.
      if you think the Wan story is cool go right ahead. i prefer the ATLA version of bending's origins, and i prefer ATLA version of what the avatar spirit is.

      @@johnnyboro9558 You have the lore wrong. The moon didnt "give" them the ability to water bend, nor did dragons or badger moles. They taught people how to USE their existing bending ... which was all bestowed upon them the entire time from the Lion Turtles and bloodlines. The moon was never considered the ORIGIN of waterbending.
      So what you are saying in essence is you do not like the entire series.

      @@BobGnarley. No i don't have it wrong in the slightest. i never said the moon gave them the ability to water bend, nor dragons and badger moles.
      according to the Wan episodes, those didn't teach them shit. the people learned bending from lion turtles.
      YES THE MOON WAS CONSIDERED THE ORIGIN OF WATER BENDING. dragons were the first fire benders. but maybe lion turtles gave them fire bending too?? lmao you must be a child or you don't remember watching ATLA. i bet you just love RAVA don't you, you think rava is just so awesome lol
      what i'm saying is if you like how Wan portrays the origin of bending and the avatar you are f**king stup!d. it was a much better concept in ATLA, and LoK decided to change it to a terrible concept that is lame and enjoyed by dumb people

    It was dark sprits that is why they did not have a personality

    I don't know if it's that I just can't relate to Korra's personality, but the way she absolutely despises anyone who tries to protect her/train her/guide her/ makes me cringe 11:05. It makes her really easy to manipulate, and also in the long run of the show it leads to mental breakdowns/crippling fear/self doubt/anxiety. It's annoying to watch a self-destructive main character who never learns, never listens, and only apologizes after she's got her way and jumped into the flames injuring herself or others. Seriously, she's manipulated SO MUCH in both season 1 and 2. And it's only possible cause she acts like a toddler who can't be bothered to listen to her parental figures. It makes me mad they paint her as a valiant and noble avatar, when she enables most of the terrible things to happen by being selfish and egotistical.

    • @JJ_6036
      @JJ_6036 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      ALSO I noticed she ONLY apologizes to people she hurts or snaps at AFTER she accomplishes some awesome power-based feat. Biggest examples are last season after Amon took her bending, she decided she could't bear to love Mako until AFTER she powered back up and contacted avatar state. After that, she was like "sure, I love you now Mako! Yay rainbows and sunshine!" In this episode, she hurts her father and snaps at Mako, only AFTER she accomplished a feat of power with the spirits did she cheer up and apologize to Mako. It doesn't feel like she's actually sorry, it feels like she'll do it again over and over again anytime she's stressed about power. Imagine your girl/guy stops loving you anytime work gets stressful. Like legitimately "I cant be with you". then later "actually just kidding, work is less stressful and I'm in a better mood, we can be together now" 😤 Mako, just run my dude.

    Wow, after all Tenzin has done for Korra, all the patience he has shown, after he opened up his home for her, but after spending a few days with a sketchy uncle who publicly denigrates Tenzin and Karra's father, and Karra is ready to crap all over Tenzin and his help. Korra really is a brat.

    • @roguechevelle
      @roguechevelle ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it was a way the writers justified her aligning with her uncle and ignoring them, they did things super fast too as they have half the episodes of ATLA to do the story in. She's a hot head like Zuko who crapped all over Iroh when he chose to align with Azula and called him a "crazy old man who would end in the gutter" after everything Iroh did for him he treated him like trash. They have the same tendencies to lash out in anger at the people they love most then they slowly realize they were the ones in the wrong. I didn't care for her backsliding to her season 1 tendencies either but the same happed with Zuko at the end of Season 2 after everything that happened during the beginning of the season he betrayed Iroh and chose his father & Azula. It took him several episodes of Season 3 to see the error of his ways.
