    I've been a swans fan for almost 20 years and while I was thrilled with the result, I genuinely felt bad watching the game. No one wants to see a club go down like that. Hoping the eagles can turn it around.

    That was worse than the 186 point belting that Geelong gave to Melbourne in 2011. Geelong that year were one of the best teams ever, they were the only team that year to beat Collingwood (on 3 separate occasions one of which was the Grand Final). Sydney went into this game at 15th. You guys have got Lions at the GABBA in 2 weeks. I feel for you.

    I remember when Port went 8 wins and a draw across 2011/12, were the first team Gold Coast beat, sacked our coach and lost our president on the same day. I recall ex CEOs of opposition clubs genuinely questioning if we should keep our AFL playing license, you couldn’t turn on the news without hearing about our future captain and his inevitable move to Geelong. A year later we knocked of Collingwood in an elimination final. Things can turn quickly in the AFL, the comp is better when your Eagles are good.

    Firstly, well done for making this video so soon after the game. I couldn't have. As an eagles fan, of course the last 2 seasons have been tough, but this game really hurts. We are still dealing with injuries, but there were enough senior players and talented youngsters on the field to put up a better fight than this. Our club is just not up to AFL standards at the moment and I don't think waiting is going to be enough for the fans, the club or the AFL. I love Simmo and I think he's a great coach. But it's time. He looks defeated and has clearly lost the room. No heart, no passion and just the basic things not happening on the field. I think the club needs a new voice, a new strategy, maybe someone better at coaching the kids and I think Simmo needs to destress and relax for a while.

      Getting rid of Simmo will cost us $3m in a payout to him and a soft cap tax probably of over a million. Plus you then have to pay $800k to get someone to come to Perth to coach, unless you convince Jamie Graham. Then you'd probably have another soft salary cap tax. I wonder how much they're getting from their assistant coaches. I think some of them will be sacked at season end. Which will be more costs... plus having to get more guys enticed from over east...

      I understand it hurts… but one free kick/missed umpire decision can not make up for 120 minutes of play. You guys had 4 quarters to get on top of us but failed… THAT is how the Eagles won the flag…. 😉

Established names and still 15th nabbed the equal 4th biggest win in V/AFL history.

  • @BDub2024

    Our drafting strategies have been in place for a number of years going for lots of kids with early picks. As the guys in the early to mid 20s showed they weren't good enough they were moved aside and early draft picks were chosen. Its unfortunate but we put time into guys like Nelson Ainsworth Langdon Brayshaw Venables Brander Reid Cameron Watson Smith AhChee Partington Murtimer Karpanny Naish Dixon etc... But all are gone. We didn't roll the dice and kept persevering with the same guys. Then guys like O'Neill Winder Trew don't appear up to it and all alternate as squad players and rookies. That's why we have only the old and the kids. Sure we finished near the top, but recruiting was poor in the number of players chosen and the lack of faith in rolling the dice and going for later draft picks. Fact is that this year you'll have more guys in the early mid 20s dumped. You have to as they aren't up to it. They may as well give game to journeymen from other clubs.

  • @Joof_
    @Joof_ ปีที่แล้ว +5

    My thoughts on the 5 biggest issues West Coast face. (from a post I made on reddit)
    Warning it is very long
    1.Success and lack of development for players during successful years
    The list demographic of West Coast has been heavily affected, specifically the players aged 22-26 as during success these players where not exposed to games of AFL and could not develop or learn the speed and over all difference from WAFL to AFL. Due to the success West Coast has also not had access to much high end draft picks and has not been able to obtain high potential players.
    2. Rewarding veteran players
    West coast has been very supportive of their veteran players awarding them with ridiculously large contracts while they are past their best. A good example is Nic Nat who not playing all year and is taking a large sum of cash this year and next year. Combined with age and his long injury list Nic Nat should never have been offered a 2 year contract.
    3. The mental health of the club and supporters
    Throughout the year there has been a heavy emphasis on mental health within the club as the constant heavy losses have affected players mentally and even reportedly fans being given a high risk of depression. Why would younger players stay when they are constantly battered mentally by the poor efforts of the club while good players like Oscar Allen, Tim Kelly and Tom Barrass are not able to reach their potential and their talents are being wasted. Unsurprisingly the top players at west coast have been targeted by rival clubs who are willing to pay a high price for their service and specifically Tom Barrass who has been rumoured to be constantly approached by Sydney.
    4. The Injury Crisis and Covid
    The injury crisis at west coast has been well documented as the onslaught of constant injuries and long term injuries has effected players of all ages. The amount of soft tissue injuries the players get is too frequent and take too many weeks to heal from. Once players get soft tissue injuries they become more prone to getting them again and being out for longer periods. With the limited amount of players available the young players who need to develop cannot because they are either put into an AFL game too early or can’t perform in a WAFL side that is constantly destroyed by similar margins as the AFL side.
    5. The lack of high end draft picks
    Due to the success West Coast has sustained over many years including their premiership high draft picks and high potential prospects have been limited. While players like Oscar Allen and Liam Ryan where taken during this period higher picks like Jarrod Brander have not turned into what they could of been.

    Watching this game mostly just made me feel sorry for the Eagles fans. Part of me loves watching my club get a belting win, of course, but another part mourns the state of the Great Rivalry. Crazy to remember how these two clubs were soaring high together not _that_ long ago, 6 games in a row including 2 GFs decided by a total of 13 points... I miss those amazing nail-biting finishes where you genuinely didn't know who was going to win until the siren went. Honestly more than anything it feels like the Eagles need to rediscover their pride, there's no shortage of talent in that team but the effort is just woeful. It never used to be in their nature to just give up like that, no matter how far behind they were. Don't think it's the coach's fault, it's the whole culture of the club that needs to change.

      Our last two drafts have been very good - Agreed. Yes pace has been targeted and we got our young ruckman. We haven't got sucked in getting older guys in. Now here is a question for Mr True Footy. Who are the guys not putting in consistently for the contested ball. We've got about 14 midfielder / flankers in the team. So we need to know who just doesn't put in consistently. I also would like some analysis done for matches we've been thumped this year. What players have consistently underperformed in these matches? I reckon that is a sign of resilience and mental strength - a key requirement for a footballer. There are about 5 massive losses this year, so it shouldn't be too difficult to see that "these guys play well when we're competitive, but the moment we're getting thrashed they drop away". I reckon in a couple of the matches when we went in with drama (massive injury list before a match like Adelaide) that some guys didn't even have the resilience to start the match in any form. That's what I really want to know Mr Footy. Who isn't winning the contested ball and making the effort. Then who always performs badly when we lose. I have some ideas but would be interested to hear your view.

    As a eagles fan the only distraction I have at the moment is the ashes (as I’m a cricket nut also). I’m counting down the weeks before this torture ends, 9 games to go before end of season. I want these 2 and a bit months to fly by quickly cause this is brutal…
    It’s so bad at the moment that only the most fanatical of Eagle-hating dockers fans have the heart to harshly sledge us at the moment… most have backed off out of conscience (which has moved me I gotta say). Dockers fans were giving it to us after the Hawthorn Tassie debacle, but now they have showed a lot of class… I truly appreciate that 👍. I actually stuck up for dockers fans after their GWS loss last week (because they have showed me sympathy, so I wanted to return the favour… I’ve matured)
    Having said that… I think every Eagle ex-premiership player is going to show up at the doorstep after this pitiful display… it may be behind the scenes but they are going to be livid by seeing this legacy of the Eagles being tarnished. Every ex premiership-player in 92, 94, 06, 18 is going to unleash rage on the club.
    We also need to call out our eternal optimists fan as well (delusional optimists in my opinion). I’m a optimist but realist also… the eternal guys cannot call it as it is and show no tough love at all (and it pisses me off). They are like “hey boys… if you get beaten by 200 points… we will all show up next week and never say anything negative… as long as we try!!! That’s all that matters!!”.
    To be honest I would rather hear “hey Eagles… if you don’t put your heart and soul into every contest, and if you don’t restore pride into the Eagles name… we’re not showing up next week… sorry, but your embarrassing us as a franchise that we hold dear, and your trashing everything that we stand for… get your shit together”
    I love the patience and positivity many of us Eagles fans have… but it’s got to the point where no one is drawing a line in the sand… and the eternal delusional optimists are doing a disservice to the club. Sorry… but it has to be said.

    send our full focus on some tough off season decisions and gameplan, get as agressive as possible at the draft table, splash some cash in the strength & conditioning and development coaching department... get some new kids in and overall hope for a fresh start in 2024

      Rubbish. He will win the best and fairest. Basically been our best player consistently for 3 years now. We gave up three picks. But got a draft pick in too remember (Bazzo). Also, anyone we got for Kelly would only be 21 now and may just be an average player anyway, as it would have been draft picks around 15 to 30. If not for Kelly we would be really far worse off.

    • @BDub2024
      @BDub2024 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eagles lost pick 14 and pick 18 for him. No guarantees there. Other draft picks were swapped which gave us Bazzo and Luke Edwards. We probably gave more than we should have. But for most of last 2 years we would be far worse off. Having said that when Kelly is 32, then it may cost us. But currently we're ahead on the Kelly trade.

    I said at the start of the year, I wonder if we’ll ever see a 200 point score again, well here we are.
    This is a time when loyalty is tested, and we’ll see who the real Eagles supporters are, but Gee-wiz, this was tough. I was busy, so couldn’t watch the game fortunately, and I don’t think I can bring myself to watch the replay.
    You could tell Simmo looked genuinely flat, and embarrassed, you can tell he wants to see improvement. But is he really the best man for the job right now?
    It’s another time where we’ll just have to bury our heads in the sand. Hopefully I wake up tomorrow and this whole season has just been a dream ( or nightmare I guess). Still 100% behind the club, but this was just painful.

    Hard to know how it might get better before the end of the year. Here are some random thoughts. Looking through the injury list, which is now somewhere between 18-20 players, there are mature seasoned players who could make a difference if they can get back before the end of the season -and that is a big if. I would have liked the club to put a line through several of them for the season and see if we could top up with some more mature players during the mid season draft. Amazing that shortly after that draft it was decided NN was not going to play again this year. I think most people already thought it unlikely he would be back this year and the club could have moved earlier and had another pick. So now we are waiting on the Cavalry as Simpson puts it. Trouble is so many of them have missed a big chunk of the season and as it's mostly lower body injuries, just how fit will they be? Still you need experienced players to provide guidance to the youngsters who are not up to the task at this stage. That is not their fault. The other major issue I wonder about is the level and severity of injuries. The players seem neither robust or resilient. Maybe time to replace the fitness and high performance team. I would like to see Gaff dropped -it annoys me that he appears to be an automatic pick while players like O'Neill are dropped - Sure their contributions are about the same, but we should be getting games into O'Neill and if he does not measure up by years end then move him on. Gaff should be on the trade table, but no one is going to come for him now.

    • @BDub2024
      @BDub2024 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ONeill and Trew aren't up to it. But the temptation will be to drop Gaff. Fact is that the youngsters need experience at AFL level. But some of them need to go to WAFL, get some form and then come back into the AFL. So you're a bit harsh on Simpson in picking guys like Gaff. You look at Chesser who went back to WAFL and played a different role. Then comes back to AFL and looks better.

    • @BDub2024
      @BDub2024 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mental resilience is underestimated. We've had some horrendous injury periods. But I reckon some guys have come along and been psyched out before the match starts. I reckon look at the big losses and then see who performs badly in those matches. A big guide. I reckon Gaff Sheed Ledwards are three for starters.

    I really hope Harley Reid doesn’t go to the Eagles. I doubt he wants to be there long term. Ideally the Eagles trade pick 1 for 3 picks inside 20, will be much easier for the top line young kids to head to the Eagles together.
    Harley Reid won’t drastically improve the club but if you get a few guns drafted at once it could make a huge difference in a couple years, like a Rowell/Anderson or a Butters/Rozee/Duursma situation.

    Second. I don't think Simmo can go until there is some stability with the injuries. A new coach will just be put through the wood chipper and wasted. I don't mind if he isn't the rebuild coach but it would be cruel to hand it over like this
    Third. An investigation needs to happen. Work out what the problem is and rectify it. Is it fitness and conditioning? Are players completely committed off field? Whatever it is it's bad for the comp having a team this far off the pace

I'm not sure but I think at the start of the season you might have predicted a bounce back for WC! WOW! How many over 30 players they have is astonishing - Gaff 31, Natainui 33, Shuey 33, Cripps 31, McGovern 31, Hurn 35 and Darling 31. Whoever is their high performance manager needs to hand the money back because no team should have that much soft tissue injury. I would say nothing is ever is as good as looks or as bad as it seems so they just need a complete review, trade the No1 pick to get at least 3 First Rounders. Probably hit up GWS for Picks 5, 7 and the compensation pick for Himmelberg leaving. That would give them 5, 7, 18 and 19. Probably going to win the spoon again next year but at least thet would be on the way relevance because at the moment, they not even at AFL basic level.

    Sack Simpson and we lose over $3 million through payout to Simpson and payout of soft cap tax to AFL. Also you'd have to then choose another coach and pay $800k on top of the pay out for a new coach. You have to pay extras to get assistants and seniors to come to Perth. Which would mean a further tax by the AFL.

    Take 2-3 top picks from the draft then go get 4-5 guys who are desperate for that 2nd chance, guys in their mid 20s with some muscle on them to protect the kids a bit and then just pick teams on effort week in week out. If guys don't want to play, they get dropped.

Jury is out on him, as I don't think he is quite up to it. Gaff has spent much of his year half forward in the middle and even some time playing behind the ball. He hasn't been on the wing for some time. Maybe Edwards was carrying an injury. Regardless, he had to play and get the experience, especially if Trew is going to be dropped at season end. Was O'Neill dropped? I really don't know how he can be kept either really. But you can't get rid of every guy in the early 20s.
