Highest number of backers for a Transformers campaign and second highest of any HasLab. I also got two. I'm a big fan of the line, I have most of them, but I also have three of the original Prime, the yellow one, the Encore reissue, the two Spychangers and the Titanium (and its repaint) and one each of the matching Ultra Magnuses.
I was 10 years old when Transformers started in 1984. I collected the toys, the comics anything I could get my hands on, and I never stopped. I watched the Beast Wars in the 90's, and collected the toys then as well. In 2001 when R I D debuted it just strengthened my love for the brand. when my Son was younger, I got him hooked on Transformers as well. I will be 50 this April, and I still to this day, rewatch all the cartoons that have run since the beginning and the movies as well. I have been s Transformers fan since I was a kid, and always will.
Same here, been here since pretty much the beginning(86). While I’m not crazy about the shows of the last decade or so, I’ll always give the new shows a shot even if they aren’t for me.
I was 13 in 1984 when I saw the 1st Transformers commercial, "Coming soon, to Marvel Comics." At that moment, I knew it was the greatest thing I had ever seen on TV. Once the cartoon started, it blew me away. I've been a fan from the very 1st time I saw it, and it's been a huge part of my life. Till All Are 1!
actually we have kinda, it was in IDW run with lost light crew. Thrilling 30 Mini-Con Assault Team, they are another alien species that Whirl kills their version of Optimus prime accidently and starts a whole thing where they infiltrate the transformers as a combiner
It isn't three robots, but in the old Marvel Comics Nightbeat would occasionally be seen in a trench coat and fedora because he was a detective. of course it was just about as much of a disguise as when the Ninja Turtles did it.
Would Lab Coats do? There was definitely an episode of the cartoon that had Bumblebee and Brawn (I think) disguising themselves with white lab coats. 😅
My older brother and I loved RiD when we were kids I only had Optimus as a birthday present though, I even got to meet Neil Kaplan the voice of Optimus at Twin Cities Con I wanted his autograph and he told me and my younger brother on how the role for Optimus was special to him not only for the franchise going back with the Autobots being cars again but because of 9/11 impacting his role, he had to make Optimus sound more inspiring as a leader and as a hero especially since this version of Optimus turned into a fire truck he then wrote a phrase that Optimus has never said in the show but would say because it’s in character that being “Evil is a fire that *must* be extinguished.” I happily display the autograph in my living room
Hasbro needs to get their shit together and work out the rights for a streaming/home video release. It's ridiculous that Disney is still holding it hostage.
One character I especially remember from this series was the woman, Kelly. (Junko in the Japanese version.) I loved how she'd find herself in the midst of the Transformers' battles, but never fully realized the truth.
Even though I had graduated from college by the time RID dropped in the US, I managed to catch a handful of episodes and was thrilled to be following a Transformers series once again, despite the dub. Still love Optimus as a fire engine and the fact he could merge with Ultra Magnus to become Omega Prime.
I think we're forgetting the most important aspect of RID '01. It gave us the unforgettable character, the legendary fan favorite Decepticon Sky-Byte. A character that was unfortunately left out of the franchise until the Cyberverse cartoon resurrected him. We'll always owe a debt of gratitude for this underrated series for his creation alone. Also, the first time Daran "Knockout" Norris's first role as a Transformer. Too bad he wasn't his usual hammy self portraying the character he was given, though.
I was sooooo happy when I saw these toys were coming to the USA!!! I was 20, and liked the Beast Wars shows, but never latched on to transformers with fur and guts. To this day I look at this toyline and the show that came with it as one of my favorites bits of the TRANSFORMERS brand. Thanks for throwin' it some attention, Secret Galaxy! ☺
I wouldn't call RID/Car Robots "mostly forgotten", Hasbro has been putting out a lot of toys based on the OG Car Robots toys lately; even had a Haslab for RID Optimus Prime etc.
It's super fascinating having grown up with a mix of US and Japanese transformers (I hopped from G1 to Headmasters to Victory, then Car Robots, etc.) to see what it was like from a purely US perspective. Car Robots also has a super special place in my heart because the OP was sung by the late Koji Wada of Digimon fame. The man's a legend.
I really appreciate you making videos and covering shows like this. I was one of the fans that was scorned for liking animation and cartoons in mid to late 80's before the anime underground scene really took off. It took a toll trying to explain plot and animation quality in my teens, when the networks were full of shows like Snorks, Muppet Babies, My Little Pony, Gummi Bears and Strawberry Shortcake that were catered towards early and middle childhood. Added to that you had Filmation and its over reliance on stock footage. It was a long decade until that perception started to change.
In my head canon, RID 2001 took place between G1 and Beast Wars. The Decepticons were more incline to use beast themed warriors (Predacons, Terrorcons, Horrorcons, etc), they just stuck with that, and rebranded themselves as Predacons. So what we saw in RID 2001, was the rebranded Decepticons battling it out with the Autobots. After RID 2001, to combat with any remaining forces of Predacons, the Autobots created beast Autobots themselves, and called them Maximals. So a new war between Maximals and Predacons became a thing, but it was too taxing on them, because of their large size. So they created smaller versions of both factions to conserve on the massive Energon usage. Thus leading into the Beast Wars.
@StarFighters76 actually in Japan Car Robot's took place years after the events of the G1 continuity but when they imported the series to the west that's where the whole "alternate universe" continuity began. I like to stick with the Japanese canon because it makes more sense this taking place after the end of the Great war where it fills in the gap before they went techno-organic during the beast era later in the far future.
I did the same Head canon by making up my own continuation through fanfic using Transformers: Operation Combination's plot that saw Decepticon High Regent Scrash and the Jet Corps break out Scourge who became Scrash's 2nd in command and the Commandos out of prison to take Earth's energy. Not only that, This Decepticon faction had a main computer system called ADA which stood for Advanced Data Analyzer and she was the evil counterpart to T-AI.
Apparently it actually takes place in 2001 in the Japanese continuity, setting it between season 2 of G1 and Transformers: The Movie. But being after the G1 story and before Beast Wars definitely makes more sense.
@@ltb1345 To be honest, I'm a bit disappointed that there was no continuation for this show seeing as there should have been a 2nd season with the other toys that weren't even on this show like Cryotek.
CR/RID is one of my favorite incarnations of Transformers. I'll be thrilled to get the HasLab figure. Much of my love for it all is due to being a G1 fan; CR/RID is a loving tribute to G1 and pre-transformers.
As a kid that was introduced to Transformers during Generation 2, I appreciated that Transformers itself was aging up with me through Beast Wars and Beast Machines. RID 2001 came out when I was in middle school, and it was the first time I'd seen Transformers shift to a younger audience. Leaving me behind. I didn't care for RID at the time, but I've mellowed on it as I've gotten older. Now I can appreciate the "move on" subliminal message at 4:59.
I was amazed when I first saw Beast Wars toys. The articulation was like a quantum leap for TF toys. I got several, but I was disappointed that they weren't vehicles. Then, when RID rolled out, I was thrilled. Vehicle transformers with Beast Wars articulation. I got all the Autobots and Megatron. Going into Armada, I thought the articulation was going to be on par with RID. Sadly, it took a step back. Unfortunately, I was on such a collecting binge that I got almost every Armada toy. By the time I was done, I realized I had made a big mistake. I mostly dropped out of TF collecting until the classics and movie toys rolled around. Some people dislike RID toys because of the extra kibble, but I think that's part of the fun. Extra doors and other pieces that could be posed to make the toys look more dynamic...
@@gundambassexe31 At what point was it subtly mentioned and why would it be? It's not like they've shied away from talking about it in other videos. 🤔
The bastard series of the Transformers franchise for sure... I absolutely love this cartoon... I was born in 1982 so G1 was my jam as a kid... but by 2000/2001 I was into the metal scene and playing in bands. Transformers were a distant memory for me.. I only happened upon this cartoon because my little brother at the time was super into this cartoon, and just by chance one day I watched an episode with him and it totally reignited my love for the franchise. It's something we bonded over, I remember for that Christmas when this show made its debut on Channel 11 he got Optimus prime, Ultra Magnus,Megatron,Skye Byte and the one Autobot car who flirts with the red car can't remember his name right now. Really wish this was out on physical media, I would buy it in a heartbeat if it was on Blu-ray. There's a DVD set that's been on eBay for a long time I believe it's all region and it's from Bulgaria or something LOL
This was one of the shows that got me back into the Transformers after Beast Wars, and I still have all of my toys from it including firetruck Optimus Prime, Ultra Magnus, Scourge, and Megatron. I kept on through to Armada and Transformers Prime.
I remember seeing pictures of the Car Robots toys online and wishing they could bring them over to the U.S. Next thing I know, we got Robots In Disguise! One of my favorite figures from the line was Black Convoy a.k.a. Scourge, which started off the series of Optimus Prime repaints we now know as Nemesis Prime!
You said G1 ended in 1987 in America...but that's not the case. The toyline actually continued right into 1990 with Micromasters and Actionmasters being the last new offerings. Even the marvel comic went up to about that point I believe.
This was a major touchstone for my toy enjoying experience. This was one of the first series I saw when I started looking at the Tomart action figure magazine when they covered the Tokyo toy show, and I also remember downloading a low quality version of the intro and outro of the Japanese series. It was like I was in on a cool secret when the series finally came out in America. I unfortunately never got a chance to get the toys though, but a friend had a few.
Was in college in 2001 and had my first Gameboy Advance too, so Transformers wasn't on my radar at all that year. Only started collecting the toys years after. They're quite good.
Transformers Robots in Disguise is probably the Transformers series that’s most forgotten due to it not being readily available on either physical media or streaming. However, after Beast Machines where it was sometimes hard to get invested in what was going on with characters constantly bickering at each other, this was a breath of fresh air.
I went all out on RID for awhile. It def revitalized my love for the franchise and the designs were so cool and leaned into my heavy otoku nerd sensibilities at the time.
It was very underrated, I never heard many other kids my age talk about it, but I was hooked. The Omega Prime reveal and Galvatron stuck in my mind long after it stopped airing.
I have every figure that came out for that line. Lots of great figures and combiners. There’s not enough love for this quirky series within the fandom IMO. thanks for the nostalgia boost. 👍
I was truly one of the Transformers fans who helped carried the franchise over from G1 to Car Robots. Even though I was born a year before Transformers G1, I had older brothers who collected the line. I even helped by buying figures like G1 Groove and Octopunch. I even collected a few figures from G2, Beast Wars. And Beast Machines despite being in high school when BM was new. I even went so far buying Car Robots figures before it was localized as Robot in Disguise - I remember somehow inspired my older brother to buy the JRX (Rail Racer) giftset for $70 at a Chinatown street fair in the Bay Area in 2000 or 2001.
I didn't watch the show but my interest was piqued by Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus being able to combine together. I ended up picking up the toys back then and sharing them with some great kids I used to babysit.
I discovered the "Firetruck Convy" randomly and it felt like i had stumbled upon a secret toyline. I got it instantly amd absolutely loved the amount of detail and transforming features. I was an adult but didn't care, collecting more of the line was fun and addictive. Still holds up to rhis day as the line that really took my interest in toys again. Missed the kickstarter though definitely going to look out for any selling at a decent price.
God, I remember being so flustered as a kid about this series, because I remembered a couple robots and clips of animation, but couldn't remember any specifics relating to plot or the name (I mean, Robots in Disguise was just the tagline for all I knew). I missed it by a hair when it originally aired to watch it regularly because I was just graduating out of little kid programming, so it was always "that Transformers before Armada where Optimus was a firetruck and another one was a shark" lol. Omega Prime is still rad as hell, though, and I'm still kinda mad at myself for not getting in on the HasLab.
So I'm just going to note this don't know if someone else has, but transformers Beast Wars was in the same continuity as generation one. So it's not a reboot.
Gotta love how they just completely skip over the Era of Takara making the Brave series toys, which ended up as the inspiration for alot of the concepts in Car robots, especially Fire Convoys combination with his trailer
I actually liked Transformers RID more than the Armada and Cybertron series. The RID toyline felt more like a continuum of the original G1 toys from the 80's.
I loved this series so much. I remember getting the fan-subs before it hit the air in America. The translations were rough and hilarious but added to the charm. I was lucky enough to live in a smaller college town back then and saw literally every toy they released on the shelves (where they were selling out almost everywhere else). I couldn’t believe we were getting such amazing designs here without import prices. I got Prime and Magnus, all three car bros and the construction guys. I also had to get megatron (what a weird multi-changer he was) and the shark dude even though I never enjoyed beast wars. 😂
Pretty sure I watched this on Fox kids in 2001 when I was in third grade. Great memories. One of my favorite toys was Megatron and Galvatron from this generation. Even though Galvatron was just a different color of Megatron the toy came with instructions for more transformations. Many Lego cities were enslaved and destroyed by Galvatron in my basement and bedroom.
By the by, I am very happy by your choice of attire, I see you know which side your bread is buttered on!!! I forgive you for REMOVING ME FIRST in that one Photobooth episode.
RID 2001 is one of my favourite Transformers series of all time. I'm so glad that Hasbro is making a new version of RID Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus. I just hope Disney and Hasbro can work something out to allow a re-release of the cartoon.
Agreed, I was not a fan of Beast Machines. I know what took place in the storyline but I was not a fan of the redesigns and did not like the addition of some characters.
From the UK, at 11 years old was on holiday in America November 2001, when I discovered these transformers. Pretty sure I spent all mine and most of my brother’s holiday money getting loads of these guys!
4:59 speaks condescending to fans telling them to move on. Also has an entire YT channel dedicated to toys loved from the past, and thus not moving on 🤷♂️
Speaking of surprise cameos... um... during the Michal Bay Transformers montage at 14:25 ... is that a blink and miss it random clip of Jason Voorhees killing someone in a sleeping bag??? 🤨
Loved G1 back when it came out. Couldn't get into beast wars, but when R.I.D. appeared on Walmarts shelves I was floored. I immediately got as much car robots as i could. Still have them today
I missed the first gen but, watched the movie a bunch because my cousins had it. Robots in Disguise is something I'm happy you've covered as I have sworn to people this exists 😆
I watched a few episodes but I was old enough to have a job. I did buy so so many of the toys including importing the Brave Maximus and Black Battle Convoy.
Woah! This was VERY good. I actually learned some new Transformers stuff here that I never knew before. Great job! I remember watching this when it aired. I don't remember it airing every day though. I thought it was a Fox Kids Saturday morning cartoon. I actually did enjoy the series, at least the episodes that I watched. I don't think I watched them all. I think 9/11 did affect the airing. I LOVE G1, hated Beast Wars, Beast Machines was ok. This I liked better but didn't like the Autobots vs Predacons. I just don't like animals turning into robots other than the G1 beasts like DInobots. The animation did look cool and I also liked Neil Kaplan as Optimus. It was Optimus without trying to copy Peter Cullen.
I'm still a g1 guy, and tried over the years to get into the other series. From the 2000s on. Last one I actively watched was beast wars. Tried to get into beast machines but my local affiliate played it on random days and times. I did kinda get into prime when it was on Netflix...but as I understand it wasn't rhe full series...oh I did love that Netflix limited series .that was dope

I do lament the loss of Transtech though. It does sound like Mainframe were going to lean into the Car Robots/RiD formula of Beasts & Vehicles too.
But it _was_ remembered for how it was affected by 9/11.
Yeah. I think RiD's lighter tone is a big reason that it appealed to a lot of kids (and open-minded adults).
Robots in Disguise was released on Region 2 DVD.
I went all out on RID for awhile. It def revitalized my love for the franchise and the designs were so cool and leaned into my heavy otoku nerd sensibilities at the time.
Absolutely loved this episode. Very informative as usual.
That Chris McFeely pop-up literally made me choke on my food. 🤣
It was very underrated, I never heard many other kids my age talk about it, but I was hooked. The Omega Prime reveal and Galvatron stuck in my mind long after it stopped airing.
Haslab Omega Prime was both the most backed Transformers Haslab, and also the second most backed Haslab overall.
I think it wasn't that forgotten.
"Robots and these guys" LMAO!!!
The most underrated transformers cartoon!
4:59 ouch… it’s like you’re speaking directly to my soul.
Ohhhhhh I had always wondered why Optimus Prime was a firetruck that one time.
So I'm just going to note this don't know if someone else has, but transformers Beast Wars was in the same continuity as generation one. So it's not a reboot.
RiD2001 was a fantastic run of transformers
Your shirt is cool. I really love Transformers. I need to make time and watch the continuation of the Japan series and the 2001 series
I’ve had the Takara Fire Convoy since these came out. I remember ordering it from Japan because no one knew if they’d get produced for North America.
A+ video!
LOVE IT! Such a great video!
I love this series, my 3rd favorite TF show after G1 & BW. Wish it got more love and a 2nd life, was so happy to back the recent Hasbro Lab offer.
I absolutely loved this show. Miss watching it with my older brother ❤
Hi Chris McFeely!
Transformers has always loomed large in my life, like some vast, predatory bird.
this is why i pefer the 2001 robot in disguise over the 2015 robot in disguise
I bought a Jem and the Holograms shirt for my niece fur Christmas last year, and she loved it.
The fuckin’ little shot of Jason slamming a camper in a sleeping bag against the tree @14:26! Thought we wouldn’t notice, but we did!😂😂
By the by, I am very happy by your choice of attire, I see you know which side your bread is buttered on!!!
Great video, guys!!😊
This show is one of my favorites Transformers show, a combination of G1 and Beast Wars. This show is deeply underrated, extremely underrated.
Ah yeah! I loved RID 2001, it was such a breath of fresh air after the weekly drudgery of Beast Machines.
Agreed, I was not a fan of Beast Machines. I know what took place in the storyline but I was not a fan of the redesigns and did not like the addition of some characters.
Same i loved beast wars, but did not like beast machines at all @@zombiejlt1
That series had a mix of G2 and Beast War II characters designs and color variations. 👍
From the UK, at 11 years old was on holiday in America November 2001, when I discovered these transformers. Pretty sure I spent all mine and most of my brother’s holiday money getting loads of these guys!
Great Stuff, as always!
Fun fact: this was my first exposure to Transformers!
Sky-byte the only one that stay on earth .
With the blessing of optimus.
Undeservedly overlooled I say. After Beast Wars this was my introduction to Transformers.
Omega Prime was the coolest ever.
9:40 oddly, Megatron approves of Optimus Prime being a fire truck. It fits him very well. Ahhhh, my brother, sometimes I miss you.
It was Optimus without trying to copy Peter Cullen.
ah, it finally makes sense why some of those G1 transformers changed into small objects while others were vehicles. I always thought it was weird.
Yes McFeely cameo....but was that Jason sleeping bag scene snuck in there Tyler Durden style?
I like the brief shot of Jason in the montage of Transformers movie moments.
4:03 “Familiar household objects” *pulls out a gun*
Love the music for your show...
I WANT THAT SHIRT-!!!
