UPDATE: A change in In-Game timing occurred on the Portal Speedrun leaderboards, so all individual levels are 0.015 slower. This video is still accurate, just the perfect time is now 15.930 instead of 15.915.
13:46 that trigger is a trigger_changelevel in every elevator that has a level transition! normally when the elevator passes a certain node in its path it sends an output to that trigger to load the next map in sequence, but *usually* those triggers have the "Disable Touch" flag set so that's the ONLY way they can be triggered. the dev who made this level forgot to set that flag on the chamber 10 elevator so it can be triggered by touch
@@globalincident694 thats just where they decided to put it, i guess! it wouldn’t have really mattered much either way. i know valve was using prefabs for the elevator sections to make it easier to just paste them into maps, so they probably just put the trigger inbounds initially and used that prefab for every elevator and just forgot to set the flag on the one on chamber 10.

Nice video as always. You and Kronios were actually one of my main inspirations to pick up Portal again and learn some speedrun strats - I went from being able to beat the game in 45 minutes to being able to beat it in under 30!
The thing about speedrunners is that perfection is never enough. No serious dedicated speedrunner who calls him or her self a SPEEDRUNNER has ever said "I'm happy with this time, it cannot be beaten and I know I can't do any better". Every world record brings the question "But can I go faster?"
This is portal speedrun, you never know what a PERFECT time is. Awesome video btw (as always). So goodluck on making videos and speedrunning. Stay Determined Msushi!
at 13:45, the reason for this debug trigger is that when the elevator is rising it touches this trigger, which will load the next map when the elevator finishes rising. The reason that this trigger can be triggered by a player is because on every other chamber there is a checkbox that makes it so that a player cannot trigger this except on chamber 10
The one thing that goes through my mind - I assume it's not faster to jump before entering the first portal, to gain more momentum going into the portal? I feel kind of silly asking that, because in my mind there is no way something that simple would be overlooked (Or, I just missed the jump to begin with, and it's in there) But then again, sillier improvements to speedruns have been made in the past, where a casual player asked just the right question
Do you have any examples of casual players doing that? That sounds super interesting. I think the only case i know of is a streamer once discovering a glitch in an older game (metal gear maybe?)
@@nadeen3157 yes, glitches are often discovered by casual players The main example of someone asking the right question was in Secret of Mana. Specifically, whether it's possible to enter Elinees Forest early from the backside. The Speedrunners knew it was possible, but it was not considered useful because of all the route implications, and it was only barely faster to the next boss, and you skip picking up a character - which makes you actually lose about 30-40 seconds due to the bugged name over the course of the game, and make this riskier. But, it turns out, we never really tried and think it through - and the biggest timesave from implementing it was actually from a somewhat unexpected source Because we skip picking up a character until way later, running through areas is generally faster, saving a little time everywhere - which turns out, adds up a lot
the speed that you enter the portal doesnt matter, the thing that allows you to go back inbounds with the last shot is called a "PQR" standing for portal quick re-entry, what this does is trigger an unstuck code as soon as the portal on the wall lands, which places you into the bottom of the elevator in a single tick, the only way that you could improve this in theory is somehow shooting faster (not happening), or maybe getting less portal travel time or something, i doubt that anything will ever pop up though.
0:35 "speedrunning is a part of most casual portal playthroughs, as if you want to get all of the achievements you're gonna have to get the gold speedrun medals" *shows image that says 97.7% of players did not get all of the achievements Great video. This part just cracked me up.

Msushi i absolutely love your channel and i also love the portal games. You should try doing a portal stories Mel speedrun. I would absolutely love to watch it!
I could have sworn the portal fire speed was tied to each portal color separately and you could near instantly fire one after the other. Been years since I played though so I don’t doubt i’m misremembering
The only thing I can think of is using saveloads to skip the cooldown (like how HL21 spams a ton of attacks into Nihilanth in a split second), but IL is single segment (no saves or loads) and I don't know if that's even a thing in Portal or not. Edit: "I know if that's a thing or not" → "I don't know if that's a thing or not"
there are 2 reasons why this wont work 1.) as you mentioned, in an individual level speedrun you are not allowed to load saves, your run must be single segment. 2.) when you save load it adds a 1 second shot cooldown, this also has a side effect of making segmented runs harder, there are ways to circumvent this cooldown to get the normal 0.51s shot delay by dropping a prop
I hope someone reads this, but if he shot the first portal at the ground instead of the seam. He would go into the portal fast because he has to wait for the bottom portal to open up since it's right below him. So it should be that it starts simple like this. Door open, step forward shoot floor, step forward shoot seam step forward at the same time the edge of the bottom portal opens up. QPR and jump.
the portal gun is capped at shooting once every 0.51s, it also has a 1 second cooldown at the start of the map, each of these portals are buffered which means that they are shot as fast as the game will let you, the last shot (the pqr shot) actually determines when you get into the bottom of the elevator, and since we are shooting all of those literally as fast as the game will let us it cant go faster by switching the portal order.
Interesting stuff! Only thing I can think of is not doing the level as an IL run and bringing something from the previous level to insta-launch you directly into the elevator. That way, you don't need to fire any portals and are not limited to the gun's rate of fire.
I was a bit curious at the beggining, cuz you can jump and crouch before the level loads, but then i remembered, that it's impossible because of the way speedrun starts.
The only way to change this WR seems to be to officially disallow the seam shot portals by saying they are out of bounds. Then the two portal with a hop into the elevator would go back to being the top method until someone could further reduce the movement
The tickrate isn't 1000 so you dont have three decimals of precision. Proof by exhaustion is impossible, due to the scale of the search space. You need go efficiently search it with like reinforcement learning and high exploration target.

Funny story, after I found the seamshot route, I tried to make a tas and the tas is somehow 1 tick slower than the wr. I’m not sure why, probably because some unknown demo recording issue or human can somehow trigger the elevator faster. For shooting under the fizzler route, my tas is 8 ticks slower.
For brute forcing, we have a random search tool, but it can only random search on a few variables. The main problem we have is the TAS might not playback consistently. We want to solve this issue first before making an brute force optimizer.
