    So far, Steven is the only Asian actor I saw in American entertainment having a role as a normal guy. People don't realize how sadly the American media discriminates against race. It's kind of funny but true is that I never saw an Asian man making out or even hugging a girl on TV until Glenn in TWD. Asian men are always in a role as funny, submissive, nerdy, passive, and what have you. On the other hand, it is a quite different story with Asian women. I really don't want to elaborate on this but I think you know what I mean. Anyway, it's good to see some changes.
    By the way, this movie was made in the USA with many American actors with American everything. Anyone know why this film is listed as a foreign film?

      That’s a bunch of bs, clearly you just haven’t watched the right movies. Stop with the virtue signaling, you were just too lazy to look for them, because the movies were already there. They were popular and even adored at massive film festivals as far back as 20 years. I can literally think of 5 great movies from the early 2000s starring Asian Americans right now, some of which still have massive cult followings. Idc abt representation, I care abt good art-of which there is plenty that Asian Americans have participated in, and your disregard for that is disrespectful to their hard work. Would I like it if I saw more Asian Americans, yeah sure, but what you’re saying is simply untrue and disrespectful to the people that opened up the industry so much.

    I think interviewer messed up or failed me (at least) when he mentioned 'entirely Korean crew' almost implying Minari is a Korean film which is not. And Steven shared a thoughtful answer there saying it's more about togetherness regardless of where you come from. Please don't try to make or frame Minari as a Korean film. I am Korean living in Korea but it's not really Korean film. Yes, Korean actors are in the movie and some crews were Korean but it's about a immigrant family funded and produced by Americans.. and Korean public does not have deep connection with the theme as well. It's more likely Korean-Americans or Asian-American people to understand and connect with the movie most as well.
    I think I felt the interviewer was trying to frame Minari as a Korean film because he really doesn't mention the controversy surrounding the movie at all and everybody knows that Minari was nominated and won this year's 'foreign language film' at golden globe which infuriated Asian american community in america and him overlooking the fact and just talking about 'almost entirely Korean crew' working in the set is... just feels like I don't know.. he's just covering his eyes or something

    • @andreww5661
      @andreww5661 3 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      I think the purpose of Seth bringing up the majority Korean crew is to bring to attention the diversity that Minari offers. Asian Americans are very under-represented in Hollywood both in front of and behind the camera. By having department heads be people of colour, Minari is unique in that diverse voices are being reflected in an American film. I do not think that having Korean-Americans behind the camera makes a film any less "American".

    • @rialove3457
      @rialove3457 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Korean society has a big patriotism complex and you can see it in your comment. It seems you don’t want to be proud of Minari just because it centers a “korean American” family.
      Korean Americans are KOREAN! Stop trying to push them away, Accept them

    • @EstelleMoon0202
      @EstelleMoon0202 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@rialove3457 I do not think the issue here is that Koreans are not accepting Korean-Americans. I think perhaps the original commenter was pointing out how it IS hypocritical that somehow Minari is a foreign language film when English is spoken more than some of the other films that are readily accepted as “American.” It’s ironic.

    • @EstelleMoon0202
      @EstelleMoon0202 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    • @catnap6383
      @catnap6383 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@rialove3457 Hello xenophobic comment. Seems like you clearly have an issue with Korea. OP is merely saying that the film is an American film, which it is, and you're projecting a malicious intent. It's produced and filmed in America with an almost entirely American cast and crew, many of whom are Korean-Americans. The film itself is not just about being American or just being Korean, it's about being Korean-American and an immigrant (or being a part of an immigrant family). Calling the film a Korean film is inaccurate. People are the sum of their experiences and people born in different countries will have very different experiences despite sharing an ethnic background. I say this as a child of immigrants who lives in NA.
      That being said, I don't think Seth was implying that it's a Korean film. He was probably just asking about the crew because he heard that there were a lot of Korean-American immigrants/children of immigrants on the crew who could relate to the film.

    Years ago - in NJ, we could get a station that carried Korean soap operas -- which are not like US soap operas that last for decades. These Korean shows ran on an arc of maybe a year or so & the first one we watched from beginning to end was so much fan & learned a lot about the Korean personality.
    1st of all, South Korea is very tech savvy --- everyone even the Grandma had a cell phone---
    The Mothers & Grandmothers are truly the strength & heart of the Korean family. And no matter the story -- the family is MOST important. I hope one day to travel to South Korea & JeJu Island off Korea that is a vacation paradise & favored as a honeymoon destination.
    JeJu is known in Korean history for the diving women -- who - at any time of the year would dive into the ocean & seek edible sea food to feed their families. That is a most amazing human ability. And the diving women had more respect as women from men in a society where the man (husband) stood above women. Not diving women.

    Asians in America are such an interesting group. They've always faced horrible discrimination but they've always kept their heads down and keep working hard and getting educated, now they are one of the most accomplished communities in the US. And rather than appreciating them, people try to act like Asians didn't face discrimination.
    Brave People. Kudos to all Indians, Filipinos, Chinese, Vietnamese, and all the Asian brothers!

I travel 8 times during the pandemic year and I also visit my family and friends and even my old neighbor during the pandemic and I don't even use a mask. In fact, I just came back from Colombia and hug and kiss my friend that just had COVID. I also attended church and everyone in the country side like me did not wear a mask. My faith in God has save me from the virus and now that I did the Pfizer two vaccine shots in February and March 2021, I also did the Johnson & Johnson on May 1. So I have two vaccine certificates to keep traveling. God is good and I feel him all day long that he protects me a lot.
