    that was a fun time travel trip. The vibrators were used to step up 12vdc to the higher voltages the tubes needed to operate in automotive or battery powered applications. They were basically "buzzers" composed of a relay wired in a way that caused the relay to oscillate, or "buzz" and the on/off voltage was fed into a transformer to step up the voltage. It would be comparable to todays "inverters". "Gassy" used to refer to gas or air getting into the tube once the vacuum was lost.

    The vibrators were used to create high voltage in automobile 6 and 12 volt system radios. It's how they got the high B+ voltage for the tubes. In many old cars you could hear the vibrator buzzing if the radio volume was low.

    Those 707A reflex Klystrons are a nice tube (9:00). Both Raytheon and Western Electric produced that exact same model (they looked identical). The Klystrons came out of Bell Labs originally, so WECO would have been the original manufacturer, while Raytheon was a 2nd source producer - for the war effort (WW2).

    About ten years ago, I sold a lot of new-old-stock vacuum tubes ( we call them Valves!) that my late dad had kept in storage from the 1960's when he had a small business. Some of them made really good money, ie KT88's and KT66's sold for as much as £90.00 on Ebay to people as far away as China! By the way - valves, such as the KT88 are still being manufactured in China

    The vibrator was used in car radios from the early years to convert direct current to alternating current at a high frequency (easier to filter out than lower frequency )
    Because tubes needed high voltage
    kinda like using a relay to make a buzzer (if you ever done that )
    there are videos on You Tube that explain it if you want to really find out
    my dad was a TV ,radio repair man and worked on a few of those type
    there were some radios that had tubes in them that would work on 12 volt without any need for high voltage

    A vibrator will appear to have something lose in it, it does, an armiture that flips back and forth switching electricity from one side of a transformer to another, making AC that can be stepped up from 6 or 12 volts to about 250 then rectified with a tube to feed the plates on the radio.

  • @olradguy
    @olradguy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You have some very, very, valuable tubes there, the 50s, are prized by audio people, re-base that tube & test it. Also the battery types WD11, 01A, are sought after. The silvering inside is caused by the "getter" being " flashed" when the tube was made, it's purpose is to absorb impurities outgassed during use. THE BH's are a gassous full wave rectifier and does not have a filament. If you can find someone knowledgeable, don't try to power the filaments without knowing exactly what you're doing you can make a very valuable collection worth almost nothing. You can look up data sheets on the internet, just type in "electron tube" + the type number after.

  • @Noodleude
    @Noodleude 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    that metallic coating on the inside of the glass is from the getters that are used to get rid of all the oxygen in the tubes. in the presence of air, the coating will turn white, so because those are still metallic, they have not lost their vacuum. I bet those tubes would still work today.

    • @RinoaL
      @RinoaL  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      i know, but thanks. although i'm not sure if some older tubes may have white substances in them due to other older designs.

    Ah, old vacuum tubes. Untraceable type numbers, many physical forms, yellowed labels with vintage radio company logos...
    If you have some experience with them you can recognize what they are for. Two pins are voltage regulators, three pins diodes, four pins triodes, etc. The silvery stuff is not mercury but easily reacting elements. When air slowly enters the tube or internal components outgas, the vacuum is maintained by the "getter" reacting with any contaminants.
    Some vacuum tubes are radioactive due to use of thorium, radium or other, artificial isotopes to aid ionization. There is also use of uranium glass for wire leadthroughs.
