    Hearing him talk about his experience making The Stanley Parable and how many ideas were left out just makes me so excited for the Ultra Deluxe version! I hope they had the chance to really make the game they wanted to make, I really loved the original for the way it challenged how I looked at media and storytelling. I’m trying to teach myself game development, so this was a really interesting talk to hear at the start of that journey, it really made me think about what I want from my art.

    This is exactly why I started trying to make games...and why I'm devastated every time it feels like a friend ghosted me...and why dating just feels like a useless chore. Davey, thank you so much for being vulnerable and real with us. I've never cried during a game dev talk, but I did during this one. Putting this in my favorites list to go back to whenever I start feeling completely alone.
    Edit: I just laughed so hard at you responding with "Yeah, you just never hear about those people" to the first question.

    Your story of experiencing in less than a year things that an overwhelming majority of people experience spread out over many is reminiscent of one I've heard before in which someone gets a lot wiser, only to recognize that an audience is the yin to the artist's yang and that there is a helpful catharsis to be had in realizing the absurdity that you are still you, despite the fact that so many people paid attention to you for a short amount of time and so why were you he--of--whom--it--would--be--said "what a lurker" or "what a witty guy," and why were you he--who--did--xyz when xyz is something 99% of people pay no mind at all. Then too, one must crawl before one walks, which indicates not just that it's embarrassing and brave to produce art that exposes our inner selves, but also, there would be no Stanley Parable without you and so, well done. What's for dinner

      Wow you're right, this is actually a blatant ripoff of this is water but with more rambling and humble bragging. He uses a bunch of the same phrases like "unconscious default setting." Replace "contract" with the "terrible master" DFW talked about and you basically have the same speech. This is honestly pretty shameless,

    Honest, if self-indulgent, like he's using this talk as part of his therapy. Beginner's Guide seems to be about his therapy too. Hopefully he matures as an artist and makes something less about him, and more about the world. His ideas about craving validation, and other ego-fueled issues, is something we all deal with. Don't forget that your ego is not all bad, it's about balance between being proud of your achievements and being humbled every day and inspired by the world around you and the universe around the world. Don't be too worried about ego needs, just be aware of them, and as he says mindful of your purpose and creative/productive intentions. Don't forget to have interesting, challenging life experiences to fold into your art and stories, but avoid expressing self turmoil in such granular detail. Good luck.

      Linie Kiste good question. The artists we teach our kids about in school usually use both personal misery and observation of their environment as content in their art.

      kerosene It's psychological and universal. People don't buy his games because they are so interested in his head, they relate to the games. We are all interested in our heads.

    • @ilushan1
      @ilushan1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      He probably won't change what he is doing, since this is what he is good at. Although your point is way more universal than his. There are a lot of ways to be sick, healthy, make good or bad art etc. You are right about that. But Davey Wreden is the best at making games about Davey Wreden, so let him do his thing.

    friend sent me this
    it's to be expected in the twenty first century but the notion of "the contract" and the obsession with the question of whether you are "being enough" reeks of the same terminal sadness of identity
    for trying to understand "the beginner's guide" this is misleading
    because game-davey is the boring one
    it's coda that we are all after
    but coda's being is nonidentical and asocial

    Maybe rename this video as this has pretty much nothing to do with storytelling in games. Sure it is important to tell young people about mental fitness, but I was hoping for something related to the title and now I wasted an hour of my time. Though yeah, maybe young people don't look up this stuff unless lured in by false promises, but I would still rethink the title.
