Three Years of Construction: the Bay Bridge | Time Lapse

- This time-lapse video shows the erection of the suspension portion of the new Bay Bridge East Span, compressing the complex, labor-intensive, round-the-clock three-year effort into a fast-paced 2.5 minutes. The sun rises and sets more than 1,000 times as crews and equipment race against the clock and endure all types of weather to assemble the self-anchored suspension span (SAS), with its soaring tower and graceful canopy of cables. The video shows the process step by step, including the installation of the steel deck pieces, the construction of a roadway connection to Yerba Buena Island, the erection of the tower piece by piece, the hanging of the catwalks from the top of the tower and the stringing of the main cable soon thereafter, the hanging of the vertical cables, and finally, the transferring of the bridge's load to the cable system - all while a steady stream of cars zip along the old East Span just to the south of the construction zone. Set to an original score, the time lapse provides a window into the intense activity involved in building this engineering masterpiece, which is set to open in the late summer of 2013.
Well Done!
I'm glad I'm one of the millions of people who actually got to drive back and forth on the old bay bridge (after that damn earthquake).
really dig that soundtrack!
AMAZING BRIDGE
Dear Lu.,
Thanks for the info.
.
The new bridge sure does look nice and the whole ''water by the city'' area looks great, picturesque.
.
Cheers.

The music is awesome!
Very cool video
Awesome video you have here! Thank you for your video also as I have not had a chance to make it out that way and see it!
Like it’s never nighttime!
very well done
Make more infrastructure!
Time Lapse put to good use!! I imagine the camera is still recording?
Excellent video! The video shows the size of this project much better than any still picture. I am just curious - was the pan and zoom done when the pictures were taken or during editing?
Beautiful bridge that cost $3.2 Billion per mile to build. That's $50,000 per inch to build. Bid for the build was $800,000,000 per mile.
They had to offset the cantilever section to make room for the new bridge
I look forward to visiting the Bay Area and touring the new bridge, but dang, what did it take, twenty years to finish?
it was in the way of where the new one was going to be
cool
You can see me driving across the bridge if you go to 33.1s and look really really closely.
A six billion dollar monstrosity, in my opinion.
Why did they replace a section of the current bridge?
sep of this year
The one bridge where it has two decks will be either taken apart, and be melted to be reused again, or just demolish it and let it be in the bay. The new bridge was design to uphold future earthquake, because the old one wasn't able to hold out much longer in the upcoming earthquake. Nothing is new, just new design, new lights install.
Dear Everyone in San Francisco,
Or anyone,
.
What was there before and what was put afterwards?
.
Was part of the ancient bridge retained?
Or was the ancient bridge eventually removed completely.
.
You are lucky in Oakland and San Francisco because you have lots of news but we out-of-towners only hear parts and when the news says the ''the new bridge will close then open'' it is hard to know what the whole story is.
.
Probably logical but lost on me; can you help?
Confused.

YoureSpotOnWithThat - The old catilever truss bridge is visible in the video.
yex the old one is fine
Ahhhh its not done!
it wasn't safe enough in case of an earthquake
almost done only one thing left demolish the Bay Bridge and replace it with the new one
How come every bridge they build in usa have same design just like the new bay bridge in san francisco and also in florida? Do not these engineers get tired of building same bridges throughout usa.
This is a translation of what that guy wrote in Arabic: "This video of Gulf bridge project, which lasted for three years while working around the clock and is scheduled to open in late summer 2013 and connects Oakland and San fransiskomrora by Yerba Buena Island between them!!"
LOL sounds like a terrorist plan, eh?
