CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Patch (Robin Williams) has a conversation with Arthur (Harold Gould), who gives him his nickname.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The fact-based story of an unconventional physician who attempted to heal patients with laughter, based on his own book and mixing equal doses of scatological humor and pathos. Robin Williams stars as Hunter Adams, a troubled young man who commits himself to a mental institution in the late 1960s. His experiences there convince Adams to become a doctor, and he enrolls in medical school, where he is appalled at the cold, clinical professionalism that alienates patients from their caregivers. Determined to provide emotional and spiritual relief as well as medicine, Adams clowns around for his patients, getting to know them personally. Although his efforts seem to work wonders and the hospital nursing staff is grateful for the levity Adams provides, his methods alienate his uptight roommate Mitch (Philip Seymour Hoffman) as well as the staff and faculty of his school. Adams perseveres, however, even starting his own low-cost rural clinic called the Gesundheit Institute, and wooing a pretty fellow student, Carin (Monica Potter). Tragedy strikes, and Adams' career is put in jeopardy, forcing him to defend his style and philosophy before a board of jurists determined to bar him from practicing medicine. Patch Adams (1998) was produced by former M*A*S*H (1972-83) star Mike Farrell, who met the real-life Adams when the offbeat doctor served as an advisor to the actor's popular TV series.

"See what everyone else chooses not to see, out of fear or conformity or laziness. See the world anew, each day." Love that line.
Absolutely beautiful.
My favourite line in the movie and VERY true to life. Mainstream media and politicians always try and force everyone to view everything from some narrow minded perspective but there is always more to life and the world around us than meets the eye.
Its truth
Me too! :-)
I was reading this while he was saying it, and I was waiting for him to say, "love that line." Lol
I miss when movies were so wholesome. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the crazy Action/Sci-fi/Fantasy stuff much as anyone. But the amount of Heart and Soul that went into movies like this are sorely missed
I finaly figured out the meaning of this scene. Arthur was looked at as crazy because he ran around telling people how many fingers do you see. The staff made him out as a "problem" because that's what they saw him as and that's why he was sent to a psych ward when in reality Arthur was a genius. Patch fixing Arthur's cup was a metaphor of him not judging Arthur and being more understanding."Look beyond the fingers" Rudy, Patch's roommate in the psych ward was the same way, don't judge a book by its cover. Rudy saw squirrels. Patch didn't judge Rudy and helped him use the bathroom by understanding him, instead of just giving him a shot or "treatment" Patch later used that knowledge to look at things differently in the medical field and being open minded with patients and understanding, rather than just "treating them"
"You treat a disease you win or lose, you treat a person I gareentee you win" - Patch Adams
@Chris Scotian look beyond the fingers see a new each day
He also saw them as people, not homework, or just patients. He is one of those doctors that didn’t lose any humanity or lack proper bedside manner.
@@aidenorcutt1738 - Who is the "he" you were talking about.
@@jpaxonreyes There was a now deleted comment on here talking about the Nostalgia Critic and how he didn’t understand the meaning behind the scene
It’s interesting, Arthur knows he isn’t crazy and seems to be perfectly happy there. Sometimes it gets exhausting having to accept “truths” that you know in your heart are false, and sometimes u just decide you don’t care if other people know what u know, u just know u want to know more of u. A mental institution is, after all, a perfectly safe and sane place to hide from the world, if you look at it like that.
I have always loved this scene. It’s so simple but it’s so poignant. Patch fixing that cup symbolized him fixing a broken part of that man’s heart.
And fixing his own broken heart. Until that point he didn’t have a direction to go in his life and Arthur gave him that direction.
"See you around...Patch." Robin's smile right after that line is one of my favorites in any of his movies. I'm gonna miss it. This is a great scene. Great movie.
Why?
I loved my favorite actor and comic
Happy 71st Robin Williams. You are missed! Rest in peace.
NEVER LOOK AT THE PROBLEM ALWAYS LOOK AT THE SOULUTION.
a banana
To arrive at a solution you need to know or define the problem.
I don’t see the solution.
I always will love that line.
To find a solution you need to understand the problem.
From a mathematics point of view this makes sense. Sometimes to find a solution you need to explore other methodologies. Too many people seemed to have over-analyzed this line. Not focusing on the problem doesn't mean ignoring it all together (that's stupid), just simply not rely on the cookie-cut method all the time. That's my interpretation at least.
Break the rules to find new ones its yeah I'd say
There is more than one method to find a solution 😉
Thinking outside the box,perhaps.
By focusing on the solution you can fix the problem. This is actually the very foundation of algebra. 💎
He’s also specifically asking “how many fingers do you see?” Not “how many fingers are there?”
I like how he says 8 is A good answer, not THE right answer.
Meaning everyone may see something different and they’d all be right, as long as its more than 4.
*dont focus on the problem..,look beyond it* RIP Robin Williams!T-T
When i heard about robin williams passing, this is the first thing that popped into my head.
It's great means his movies touched you in some deep memories
There is not a sane person on this earth who would say that's bad.
shawn r 😊
I only saw this film completely one time, and that was when it came out. I was eight years old at the time. I forgot a lot of what was in this movie over the years, but I distinctly remembered this part. Sadly, I wanted to write a letter to Robin Williams telling him how he inspired me with this scene but never got the chance to. That's something I'll always hurt for. But the fact that, at one time, he inspired me to look at things differently is his legacy to humanity, and that should never be forgotten.
R.I.P. Mr. Williams
Beautiful if you focus on the problem you will never see the solution
I love this movie! Robin Williams portrays Patch Adams really good. Seeing him on screen puts a smile on my face! RIP Robin Williams! You will never be forgotten...
RIP Harold Gould (December 10, 1923 - September 11, 2010), aged 86
And
RIP Robin Williams (July 21, 1951 - August 11, 2014), aged 63
You both will be remembered as legends.

Arthur: "See what no one else sees. See what everyone else chooses not to see, out of fear, or comforting or laziness. See the whole world, anew, each day."
"it is like a finger pointing to the heavens. dont focus on the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory."
Only Robin Williams could bring such emotion and a heartfelt performance to this role. I love the film.and I love what the character and the real person stood for. See the world anew each day.
Rip robin we still miss u. Best acter that will ever live
This scene was utterly profound to a friend of mine while they were tripping balls on mescaline that it reduced them to tears and opened their heart. When he says to look beyond the fingers it was interpreted as, look beyond the ego personality projection and see the soul. Nothing can hurt you when you stop identifying with the ego and see the "other self" in the seat of the soul in all its magnificence, regardless of how repulsive the personality complex it's portraying might be.
It might not be the intention of the director but it was enlightening
May Zak, Zelda, and Codey find peace in their hearts and wholly accept that enormous legacy that their father has left in their hands... Robin made a truly indelible mark on this modern society. I will miss him and I send my condolences to his kids and the rest of the Williams family. May Robin attain a fortunate human rebirth, one that is imbued with so much joy, spiritual practice and deep development of inner-strength, and artistic creativity, once again touching the lives of hundreds of millions around the world. #RobinWilliams was fabulous troubadour and a genius of an actor.
Amen
I miss Robin so much. :-(
goodbye robin williams :(
Today my morning cup of coffee was leaking and so I’m here watching this clip. ❤
I can't find it on youtube, but Harold Gould gave a speech about love and "staying around" during the first season of the tv sitcom, Soap, that should have won him an Emmy.
I love you 3000 - RIP Robin.
This is, to this day, my all time favorite movie scene.
robin oh robin wiilams why did you have leave us we all miss you i love this movie
Harold Gould. Awesome actor. He had a wonderful scene in a show called Soap with a young Billy Crystal. He talks about his late wives and continuing to hope for love.
A Very Touching Moment, R.I.P Mr Williams
best scene ever
Patch Adams
Dead Poets Society and
Good Will hunting are three remarkable movies that might change your attitude forever.
Sad part,is they only apply to geniuses or idealists who somehow existed
I'll never be good will hunting nor a doctor existing like him
This is one of my favorites or Robin Williams.
Y'know, this is kind of a new spin on the part in 1984 where O'Brian tortures Winston Smith into seeing however many fingers he tells him to see. The thing is, THE FINGERS ARE NOT A PROBLEM...THEY ARE JUST THERE!
best movie i ever got to watch on dvd 8 fingers
Such a great movie, RIP Robin Williams.
One of his best! I miss him...
Wonderful movie and a great, talented actor.... Sooo talented and funny!!!! 👋👋👋👋
Every life lost is a tragic event for humanity. That counts for Mr. Williams as well. I wonder what went through his mind in all the years. From what I unterstand, there was some deep stuff in his thoughts. May he rest in peace. He will be missed. At least by me. People with deep thoughts on their minds are a rare phenomenon.
Yes
I can't stop crying
this is by far 1 of my favorite Robin Williams movie
Eight's a good answer.
Awesome moment thank you robin
How could 55 people dislike this??? A heart warming moving scene!
I guess they don,t get it .....yet😉
Because they can’t see
“It was a really good session I thought” just finished it off perfect
OMG, I miss Robin Williams so very much!
Awesome scene
one of kind.
this one scene is one of the best in inspiring movie history. its so beautiful.
That smile in the end is contagious.
The score is so brilliant. The score? The music right? It makes my eyes tear up
You really dont see it, do you? If you focus on problems, you never see the solution. Which means; see what you want, then work for, without focusing why you dont have it in the first place.
It took me forever to remember where I knew this guy from... he was miles on golden girls!!
And he was in the movie "The Sting" alongside Robert Redford and Paul Newman.
yeah thats right
I saw this as a young boy... I don't remember ANYTHING about this movie, I didn't even remember what it was called, but I remember this scene.
R.I.P. Robin Williams

you know arthur is right, mostly everyone focuses on the problem and won't see the solution
Remembering Robin Williams.
The way I interpreted this scene was that Arthur felt that no one would be able to understand the lesson about the fingers. To understand the problem and then to think outside then box and find the solution.
Then Patch seeing the leaking cup in Arthur’s room (something Arthur did not have a solution for) and then creates a patch for it. Arthur then realizes that there is more to Patch, believes he is bright, and teaches him his way of seeing the world
*think outside the box
This was a great movie highly recommend watching it👍🏾👍👍🏽🥇🏅🏆
This is so true
priceless actors.
His opening line always gets me
Rip to both legends 💔💔...
As I watched this movie one day this scene caused me to have a bit of an epiphany of sorts. To me the cup was Arthur's heart which had a small hole in it and hope had drained out of it. When Hunter "patched " his cup he actually mended his heart and caused him to have hope again because he realized Hunter looked passed the hole in the cup and just saw the solution . Who knows what others saw but ...that's what it did for me He patched my cup too :)
This scene really cheers me up.
Una de las mejores películas de sentimientos, emociones y sobre todo corazón al actuarla
i figured that the old genius saying that focusing only getting one solution, while simplicity of observation and simple goal will expanding thousands of solution.
i think it applied most for think tank or research and development
HAHA!! If you watch closely the sticker starts to peel off the cup!
Patch my ass!! LOL!!!
priceless film.
It's a wonderful scene.
The best scene of the movie. You can conform to people, parents, government, church & friends out of fear or you can be who u chose to be.
Too many life lessons to be had in this movie - love life ❤️❤️
gold just gold
I wished Robin would have taken this advice.
He did. And so did every movie he was in.
Nobody is ever wrong.. We just think too much and feel too little.. Life is not about anything except making it better not just for me or you but for all life JJ ❤
You know Tom Hanks just came out with that movie a man called Auto I bawled my freaking eyes out it was on tier with this
Why is that man in such a hospital? He could be a genius!!!!
Echo is active! ❤
The world lost it’s “Patch”.... 💔
Robin should have watched this before taking his own life
Anyone else on a Robin Williams Marathon?
Cool the Video
I'M NOT CRYING YOU'RE CRYING
Great lesson in life
Set yourself free moon taxi
cried the first scene. ugh...kinda felt like he was explaining now ish... :( rip r.w.
Both of these actors are gone :(
I never realized that Arthur was actually talking to himself half of the time.
It is simple buddy I think, we get stressed out by many many problems each day . If we focus on the problems .. we get overwhelmed and depressed . If you've watched this movie ... you will see that Patch gets out of here without being depressed anymore . When he confronted one of his teachers ... he started to look unfocused at his teacher arguing with him and that made him relaxed . When you read text for example you can read it with focus or you can read it also by creating images.
I would have told the man he was crazy. Straight up.
Man I miss Robin. The world is a lesser place without him in it.
Arthur taught me that day too, whenever anyone pisses me off I don’t respect, I “blur” them, like Patch does to Dean Walcott.
rose's golden girls boy friend!
Robin Williams saw through the noose, and saw the solution on the other side!
heartless wow
This movie is the reason that I'm living as a special educator.
I know now. The key of happiness is gratitude. If only I can say this to him. I've been depressed for 20 years. Robin William teach me bring happiness as a caregiver. If o nly I can give my thank to him. Right now I'm taking another program in public health, I want to help depressed people so they can see what I see.
see the solution.......
He just solved an OCD cure before my eyes

"Wow! How inspring! That's the most original message I've ever heard in a Robin Williams movie since 'Good Morning, Vietnam', 'Dead Poets Society', 'The Fisher King', 'Jack', 'Good Will Hunting', 'Being Human', 'Jakob the Liar', 'Flubber', 'Bicentennial Man', and 'Man of the Year'. But I'm sure this Robin Williams movie has a TOTALLY different spin on it!"
-Nostalgia Critic
That's a yikes from me
KINDA LIKE THE WORLD CAUGHT IN THE MATRIX.
