How to rename "EFI Boot" to "Windows" on the Mac

  • This is an irritant for some people like me who use multiple drives and partitions. Since all Windows and/or Linux boot partitions show up as "efi boot" on the Mac startup, it is desirable to change the name on startup so we can easily figure out which partition is which.
    For some, it is merely the aesthetic value, but, in either case, being able to change the EFI boot name is generally desirable.
    Let us see how to do this on the Mac for installers and then how to change the same once we are booted into Windows on the Mac.
    Generally, since we would format the Windows partition to NTFS, we have to use a small workaround in Windows to change the boot name for the Mac.
    In this video, we will see how to go about the name change...
    #Mac #EFI #BootCamp #Windows #Apple

    Not sure why you are the only one providing this information, but good job. I actually followed the steps for Windows with NTFS partition for my ArchLinux installation because I couldn't mount my ArchLinux partition on the Mac. I have a feeling that I could have done this differently by mounting the mac's efi, but this way worked so thanks!

    Thank you for the detailed tutorial. I have 2 questions:
    1. If this installer is to be used in both Mac and PC/ Windows Laptop, will these commands cause any problems during installation in other devices?
    2. Can you tell us how to change the name in case of a bootable Windows Disk (external SSD)?

    Can you please explain how to rename the disks upon boot up? In an easy way maybe with out having to use the bless command? When my max starts up and I have a choice of which disk to boot up from, both disks have the same name and only once I’m booted into each disk is the name change obvious. Otherwise upon boot, they are both still named the same. Can you please show how to change this? Thanks

    Hi, I tried this and it worked very well on windows running on my mac mini. Now I want to try it on Ubuntu running on the same machine and external SSD but I cant seem to install Ubuntu correctly. Can you please make a tutorial on how you installed Ubuntu 20 on an external drive? I would appreciate that very much because I have been trying to install it and keep getting a fatal error after installing it. Thank you in advance!

    This really helps, but it only works on external drives. The thing for me is that, I have a mac pro which I can install sata drives, and I have two installs of win 10, and during boot they all shows up as "windows" and have same icon, even after using bless tool to the efi partition, they don't change anything. Any suggestions?

    • @TKSonix_
      @TKSonix_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      After some testing, I figured out it is possible to changed internal drives' label as well, using the method in the video. BUT, bootcamp volume which is attached internally can't be changed in current firmware.
      If my guesses are correct, when there is a "EFI/Microsoft" boot manager exist alongside the "EFI/Boot" bootloader, Apple's boot selector will automatically override the label to "Windows" and its icon to default bootcamp volume icon (providing the drive is internally attached, this does not affect external drive).

      There are a couple of things you could try...Reset the NVRAM (CMD-OPT-P-R at startup) to see if that helps. Second is to go into the recovery mode (CMR+R at startup) and perhaps re-install the Mac OS from there if nothing else works.

  • @Rapidlaser

    Hi Nitin, please give your opinion on this, stack exchange question 410374 he claims you can write to the efi partition from OS and no need to boot into windows, surely the EFI partition isn't NTFS?

    • @NCDSLR

      MacOS cannot write to NTFS partitions, although, there is a work-around that might work...Try mounty.app

    My windows boot drives for mp3,1/4,1/5,1 are separate drives and MBR.
    Is there a way to change names in Boot menu with these?
    Having several windows versions on different drives they all are listed as "Windows", so I don't know which version I'm booting from. And, of course mp's internal slots are not hot swappable.

    • @NCDSLR
      @NCDSLR  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can always reinstall MacOS from a USB or using Internet recovery on startup. I generally delete the MacHD and reformat (erase) when I do a fresh install. It should not be a problem excepting some time wasted on the reinstallation.

    Now that I have deleted the windows partition, the boot screen still shows windows as an option to boot that's followed by the blue screen. How can I remove the windows files all together? Should I delete the .disk_label file or the .disk_label_2x file??
    Will that work? If not, please help me with a solution.

    • @NCDSLR
      @NCDSLR  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just remove the partition that was created for windows and the transfer to it from Bootcamp. Running Bootcamp might detect and do that by itself.

    • @sravanthigeraldine
      @sravanthigeraldine 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The windows partition was removed, since I did the efi installation, uninstalling windows through bootcamp wasn't being successful. I just removed the label files (🤞🏽) and it worked. The macbook booted right into MacOS. Thank you! ☺️

    It seems to me this video is about changing the name of the usb installers first, duplicate some files and then be able to change the name of the windows 10 partition. Is it possible to simply change the name EFI boot to windows 10 pro without having to use a usb installation disk? Either way, great video. Thank you for posting this

    • @NCDSLR
      @NCDSLR  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it is possible and that was one of the points. Just search the OS partition (Windows or Linux) for the efi boot files and use bless on the mac on the folder containing those files. You can also use a Paragon NTFS trial version if needed and do that to NTFS partitions from the mac. There are some partitions that might be hidden from the mac Disk Utility, but, can be displayed and mounted from the command line if needed.

    I have a question....is it possible to rename EFI BOOT to WINDOWS 10 ? I have a lot of operating systems into the same external drive!

    • @NCDSLR

      Yes, you can name it to anything you want. Just use the Mac OS bless command to create the label files and put them in the EFI boot drive as shown in the video.

    This is confusing. Someone needs to make an app that you can just change the names and icons eazy. All this technical hocus pockus, tried this with my windows 7 partition, but it’s not EFI on the windows side. That and cannot assign drive letter to a partition like win 10. Did something now won’t show the windows option, luckily i have an image before doing any of this.

    • @NCDSLR

      I just shared how I got around this issue and unless you have a very specific requirement, you can install the different OSs in a VM with whatever name you want. In fact, since we do not have bootcamp drivers on the Apple Silicon, this is no longer applicable on that...
