Just got hired as a long term sub until I take my subject area test and become the official teacher for 2nd grade ELA! So nervous but your study videos have been helping reassure me! Thanks for all you do!
This was a fantastic video Kathleen. I have an A.S. in Civil Engineering, and a B.S. in Community Ministry. I started teaching online during the pandemic and loved it, and I wondered about the pathway for certification. This answered every question I had, plus a few more I didn't know to ask. Thanks!
I'm so glad it was helpful. The process is intense, but you can do it if you take it one step at a time and don't delay the tests. I am thrilled you love teaching. Thanks for watching and good luck!
Thanks as always, Kathleen. You and your dear husband are helping me very much as I plow through all the Praxis exams I need to pass for my licensure as a Special Ed generalist with Elementary emphasis. Passed three, only two more to go! 👍😁‼️

Thank you for your explanation of the process! I have my degree in applied mathematics. I know it depends on the state (I am in Oregon), but what do you think are the chances that I would be able to teach high school math after turning in my transcripts?
You can teach high school math. You can teach in many states while working on your certification. You will have to complete the tests (check your state for which ones) and complete an alternate certification program. Be sure to contact you state Department of Education to find out exactly what you have to do. However, most districts are looking for qualified math teachers. High school students have to meet high standards in math to pass the state exam. I am sure your skills will be an asset. Good luck!

hi i’m junior in high school. i’m looking forward to being a teacher. however right now i’m looking on where to start. i don’t have the best experience in high school but i’m trying to better it by getting my credits i need to graduate. i have many questions besides high school and my current state, where should i begin on looking too? especially money being one of my problems a 4 year university seems a lot to me. i know i can work towards paying it off but i don’t want to be in debit. where do you recommend i start? what are things you would of done differently if you’ve chose to be a teacher at a young age?
Hi there, so glad you asked. To be a teacher, you have to have a 4-year degree. But you can get that degree from any accredited college. To save money, many people will go for two years at a community college. The first 2 years of college are usually referred to as your AA. I HIGHLY recommend you do not spend a bunch of money on that part of your education. Find a college in your state that provides tuition waivers and grants. Try not to get loans. Try to find money for school through waivers and grants. Also, you are very young, and you may change your mind. Try to find the most affordable degree you can. I am telling you, it doesn't matter where you get your degree. Just make sure the school is accredited. The biggest thing I would have done differently (GREAT question by the way) is I would not have spent so much on my undergrad degree. I was young and did not understand that a 45k loan would take a very long time to pay back. I would have tried to find the money through grants and waivers. You're smart to ask these questions. Think about the return on investment (ROI) of your degree. Teaching doesn't pay much. So spending a ton on the degree does not have a great ROI. Thank you so much for watching and for your questions.
Thank you so much for such an explicit explanation. I am a Nigerian and I already have a Bachelors degree in Education. How do I pick it up from there if I want to get certified to teach in the states. I get some remote jobs advert on LinkedIn but I can't apply because I Don't have certification yet.
You're welcome! To teach in the United States, you'll likely need to pursue certification or licensure, which can vary by state. When you submit your transcript, are they only looking at your major, GPA and if it’s a accredited university or more? I’ll be graduating soon with a business degree. I’ll graduate with a 3.1 BUT I have a bunch of Ws on my transcript. Does that matter???
Thanks for talking about NJ! the website is so confusing. I have my BFA from the US, but I went abroad for my MFA. I'm having a hell of a time trying to get ahold of my transcripts for my MFA. I think they have to be translated and notarized by a third party company before they are sent to me, and now NJ only takes things electronically so I don't know how I'd even submit them if they're just supposed to get to me in a sealed envelope. I don't even know where to start with that bit. I don't know if I should be contacting the school to have them send the transcripts somewhere to be notarized, or if I should be looking for the company to do it and seeing if they acquire the transcripts for me. In the meantime I've made an account on the NJ site but I'm afraid to submit my undergrad transcripts before I have anything for grad school. I'd rather submit it all together, but who knows how long it could take! What a nightmare.
HI there, thanks for watching. I would start with the university. They should be able to get your transcripts electronically to NJ. Submit your undergrad stuff. That is all you need to get started. The MFA will help you later if NJ pays extra for people with master's degrees. But get started. Send in your undergrad and get going on those exams and other requirements. Thanks for watching :)
Hi Dr. Jasper. How early can you start the process of applying for a Florida teacher's certificate while completing a B.S degree (I'm a senior at the College of Education).
Hi there, you can start taking the test at any time. You do need to have transcripts with a bachelors degree to start the process for the letter of eligibility. However, you can create an account with the state, begin taking those exams, and checking those of your list. But you’ll need to get that bachelors on your transcripts before you are able to get the letter of eligibility.
❤️so helpful … so, I have my masters in healthcare , I have bachelors in health sciences , and have taken five credential classes ( but placed it on hold due to not taken CSET and health issues )… do you think the state of california will only ask me to take a few classes and exams and I get certified ?
They decide when they see your transcripts. There is no way to know until they send you the letter. You can go on their website and see the tests you have to take. Here’s a link that lists all the tests. www.ctcexams.nesinc.com/PageView.aspx?f=GEN_Tests.html

Hello from Buffalo New York I’m looking around right now for information and it seems the specifics of my situation are lost in the search bar. I am 23 and I’m currently working in the trades. I have an associates in communications/media and I love the idea of transitioning from my current job to being able to teach, specifically social studies or history, I’m of course expecting to have to go back to school in order to do this and I am more than willing to put all the effort forth. How do I best obtain information for my specific circumstances? It seems most people transitioning to teaching already have a much more focused bachelor’s degree. Any guidance would be really appreciated :)

Thanks so much for this information. I watched your other interview videos. I was surprised that you did this as a second career since you were also a Principal. I’m trying get into this as a second career myself. In my state/county I set up a meeting with the person in charge of teacher licensure. I brought in my transcripts and she told me all the things I needed to do and the classes I was qualified to teach. I’m documenting my journey but it won’t be on my channel until I get the job (I don’t want my currents jobs to know I might be leaving).
Thank you sooo much for this I am recently a new graduate NICU NURSE my 10 year goal is to open a Trading School I would like to know how would I got about creating a GED Course and Opening a Trading School
Hi! Very useful channel this one. Thank you in advance. Look, today I started my process of applying for a temporary certification here in FL. However, after creating my account successfully, I moved forward to the next step and filled out all forms regarding address, names and SSN. The problem is that I didn’t find the option Temporary Certification and picked cCertification and submenu: Educator Certification Application. The next steps required me to mention subjects add them and inform my educational background. I did everything, all my BA and Master etc. but got stuck in there because the system doesn’t let me move next step. The system wants me to mention all my work experiences as a teacher, dates, schools, etc., and I don’t have them. I’m applying for a temporary certification/ permit to teach. Can you help me saying where I made the mistake and how to fix it? I even didn’t upload my transcripts. Did I pick the wrong option?
HI there, They do not call it a temp certification anymore. Instead, you get a letter of eligibility. You fill out the online application on the state department of education website (FLDOE.org) and then you will receive a letter of eligibility in the mail. You have to go through the state. I would contact the FLDOE if you are having trouble with the website. It is a process and they move slowly. So be patient. Have a great day and good luck!
I'm currently working in a preschool, do I still have to register with NJ website even though when I get my degree I'm staying at my current job? I'll soon get my bachelors in eaelychildhood
That all depends. Usually if your preschool is run by a private company, you do not have to go through the public school process. But if your preschool is part of the public school institution, you'll have to. I would ask the people who run the place. They will know. Thanks for watching.
Thank you very much. Nice presentation. God bless you. I am from India, Kerala. How are the requirements different for a person who has been teaching for over 20 years in another country, and is now living in the US working towards their green card, and wants to teach in NJ?
In NC you have to complete a NC teacher ed program before submitting your application, so would this mean I need to do a Masters or Licensure only program before being able to apply? Can't submit it without it, which means they wouldn't mail me a statement of eligibility and give me what requirements and courses are needed.
Requirements differ depending on the state in which you are seeking certification. That’s why it is extremely important to check with your state’s Department of Education. They will be able to provide you with accurate and up-to-date information on the application process and the prerequisites for teacher licensure. ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
No way! We need all types of teachers. You may be well suited for ESOL and to help others whose first language is not Eng. You can be a teacher for sure!
So many of my colleagues express the same concern. We need variety in our education system, I'm from Australia and you can have a classroom with half or even 3/4 of the students ESL. That's fantastic to be such a skilled teacher! Keep it up!
after you finish the 2 years and you pass all the courses will i have a permit teaching license I am getting what is called a limited CE in NJ but it says it will expire in 5 years i believe its called the 5 year pilot program I am just worried if i put all this work in and money in 5 years will CE expire ?

You can get a master's in anything you want. So even if you do not have a degree in teaching, you can still get a master's in ed leadership. My undergrad was in English, and I got my Specialist and Doctorate in Ed Leadership. Hope that helps.
Hi Kathleen, I’m not talking about masters, some colleges have a post baccalaureate program for people who already have a bachelors but want to pursue teaching as a career. My question is would doing what you said in your video be a better alternative and less expensive than enrolling in the post bacc certification program or is the same thing?? Also when you mention the courses you have to take to become a teacher, those are college course right? So you had to enroll back to college to fulfill the requirements. Did you have to do student teaching??? I do substitute teaching so can’t that take place of student teaching? ( I heard when you student teach you can’t work) I’m just looking at the costs and trying to see if I do the courses and still work so that I can pay my bills. I’d appreciate any help you can give me.
@@tanseelou806 Ok yes know I see. The thing about the alternative cert route is you can do it while teaching. And it is usually a certified program by the state, so you know for sure you'll get that certification. I would go the alt cert route personally. That's what I did. Also, try to find a waiver or grant. Sometimes, if you can prove financial hardship, which isn't difficult if you're substitute teaching, you can get waivers and discounts. Usually, it only take a letter explaining your situation. I still cannot believe they charge for that. With the teacher shortage, they should be paying for it.
@@KathleenJasperEdD Thank you 😊 According to my understanding the alternative cert program is for those who are ready teachers but want to be certified in another subject so they can teach that subject. That’s not the case for me, I’m just starting out. I’m not a teacher yet so I need to do the post bacc program for non teachers to get teacher certification. I wanted to ask about student teaching, did you end up doing student teaching or can substitute teaching take the place of student teaching??? I have to take some education courses and then student teach ( five days a week- how can I fit in my job??) but since I substitute teaching I was wondering if I can bypass that and still get certification, what do you think?
@@tanseelou806 For me all I need to go through the alt cert program was a bachelors. I guess it depends on the state. But most states provide and alternative rout for those who want to teach but have a degree in something else. For example, I had a degree in Eng and then took the alternative certification route and got my certification that way. Once I finished up those courses and passed my tests, I was certified.
You will have to o to the Texas State Department of Education website to find that information. There is usually a portal to apply for certification and a place to send transcripts. However, ever state has its own process.
I will give a zero if an assignment is not turned in. It is sort of a placeholder and an attention getter. Students can turn it in late for a 70. Just turn it in. Then the zero goes away.
You're right, seeing a zero can be a motivator for students to get it done. That is awesome that you take partial credit for late work. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for breaking it down for NJ.. No one tells you this stuff & the site can be quite confusing.. thank you so much !!

You are so welcome! Best of luck! 🙂

HI there,
They do not call it a temp certification anymore.

I gained the teaching qualification and experience from India and wish to become a teacher in UK but I can't get because of the qualification. Now I wish to gain EYFS or level 2, 3 but I don't know where I want to join for it. Would you please help me for that also let me know about the free course.
I do not know the guidelines for the UK. I would contact the department of education where you want to teach to find that out.

How are the requirements different for a person who has been teaching for over 20 years in another country, and is now living in the US working towards their green card, and wants to teach in NJ?
You will have to check with the NJ department of education. They set the standards for certification.
In NC you have to complete a NC teacher ed program before submitting your application, so would this mean I need to do a Masters or Licensure only program before being able to apply?
Can't submit it without it, which means they wouldn't mail me a statement of eligibility and give me what requirements and courses are needed.
Also this makes it hard as most NC teacher ed programs require you to already be teaching? 🤷♂
Requirements differ depending on the state in which you are seeking certification. That’s why it is extremely important to check with your state’s Department of Education. They will be able to provide you with accurate and up-to-date information on the application process and the prerequisites for teacher licensure.

Hello, English is my second language and I have an accent, when I’m nervous I make mistakes. Would this be an impediment to become a teacher?
No way! We need all types of teachers. You may be well suited for ESOL and to help others whose first language is not Eng. You can be a teacher for sure!
@@KathleenJasperEdD thank you so much! I just finish my associates! I’m coming for my bachelors degree! 💓
So many of my colleagues express the same concern. We need variety in our education system, I'm from Australia and you can have a classroom with half or even 3/4 of the students ESL. That's fantastic to be such a skilled teacher! Keep it up!
@@teresadezylva thank you so much! I have a passion for teaching and I know that it will not be easy but it will be worth it. 😊💓
after you finish the 2 years and you pass all the courses will i have a permit teaching license I am getting what is called a limited CE in NJ but it says it will expire in 5 years i believe its called the 5 year pilot program I am just worried if i put all this work in and money in 5 years will CE expire ?

Hi Kathleen what do you think of the post baccalaureate program in teaching if you have bachelors but not in education ?
What’s the email to send transcript to in the State of Texas
You will have to o to the Texas State Department of Education website to find that information. There is usually a portal to apply for certification and a place to send transcripts. However, ever state has its own process.
I will give a zero if an assignment is not turned in. It is sort of a placeholder and an attention getter. Students can turn it in late for a 70. Just turn it in. Then the zero goes away.
You're right, seeing a zero can be a motivator for students to get it done. That is awesome that you take partial credit for late work. Thanks for watching!
Somebody from Illinois?
I would check with your Illinois Department of Education. Every state is different. Thanks for watching.
