The thing is, Mikel was a creative player at youth level. He still had that when he played for Chelsea but simply parked it up and played this simple and unattractive but very important part for the club to succeed. United and Ferguson fought for him because of his creative abilities. But he simply transformed to a defensive player that was disciplined and didn't stray to join attack often just to maintain the balance and shape of the team. He sacrificed his creative abilities allowing others to shine. That was why he was underated by many who didn't understand his value. But the Coaches understood his importance and always selected him when fit.

Chelsea Legend. This guy was there for the club whenever he was called upon even through all the harsh criticism (a lot unfair) he got from a some of the fans. He was more of an offensive talent as a young player but quickly settled into that DM role at the club without any protest for being played in the wrong position, a position he quickly took over and made his own and had his best game in my opinion in the finals against Bayern with the team missing SOOO MANY key defensive players that day, he was one among many that stepped up big.

Mikel was an incredible player in his Chelsea days. Kanteh is the short & quicker/faster version of Mikel Obi. He was basically intercepting almost every ball in his territory and that gave license to our attacking players to focus more on the attacking phase of the game than defending.
Most people expected him to be regularly amongst goal scorers like the Lamps, Bisons or Ballacks which was unfair to him. That's why he's criminally underrated.

Thank you very much. I still grudge Jose Mourinho, for converting Mikel's play to a DM. That was a good reason for him, to sign out and join another club, I guess he was desperate to keep the job because he chose Chelsea over Man UTD, he didn't want to wind up not having a top club to play for. His natural skill, was sacrificed by Mourinho's ego tripping attitude. He won one over MAN UNITED'S gaffer, was all he meant for Jose.

Yeah Mikel was special in his role for Chelsea. So good on the ball, hardly ever missed a tackle and never gave the ball away.
I'm glad legends like JT rate him as a legend of Chelsea too.
Weldone bro. You were a joy to watch at CFC

This guy played under the wrong managers. Mikel under Pep, Ange or Arteta is simply world-class. The control, the calm, the tackling, the physique, reading of the game

It is pretty insane how underrated he was during his spell at Chelsea. He made it look so easy that it felt like he was slowing the team down, when in actual fact it was balance he added that got us through many games and added 3 points, If we look at it today? We have talented Midfield but no balance, Caicedo and Enzo dont know who they are in this current set up. Perhaps Lavia will be able to provide that balance to allow Caicedo and Enzo to find themselves and play at their best. But Shout out to Mikel, my eyes were truly opened at the 2012 Finals of the Champions League, i hadnt seen some one so cool, calm and collected, no fear no panic against a Bayern Team that was in all likelihood the best well run team in Europe at the time, Ribery & Robben were tearing teams apart.

Obi might have not always been first pick but when things started going wrong he would always rise to the top. Top class player would still do a job for us now .

I hated that Jose completely converted him to a defensive midfielder. He was a No 10 coming through as a teenager. He had vision and great passing ability.

There is a dimension of Mikel’s plays that remains obscured. In three or more finals, Mikel would win the ball, supply Lampard, and then Lampard would finish or provide Drogba with the ball for finishing. No player makes modern football so easy like Mikel. That’s why we need him at the national team. He would do the nation disservice without coaching the national team, in my opinion.

Way ahead of its time in the prem , in his prime he has the same level of technicality as Jorginho with better physical . He's easily a 100M player today.

The holding midfielder (destroyer) we currently need. Hopefully, Ampadu and colwil can be brought from loan to cover us defensively.. Ampadu as destroyer, colwil as Lcb / lb
