  • Sony FE 24-50 2.8 G Lens Review
    Sony's Compact F2.8 Premium Quality Standard Zoom Lens. This lens may be most interesting to owners of one of Sony's compact full-frame cameras such as the A7C, A7CII or A7CR. Its small format factor, sharp focus, fast AF and bokeh may make this lens more appealing than carrying three or four F2.8 compact primes or three larger F1.8 primes.

      Thanks for the positive feedback. As mentioned in the review I thought Sony's FE 20-70 F4 G should have been voted lens of the year in 2023. I liked it so much I took it to India for a one-month shoot as my primary lens on an A7RV. I created an extended travel seminar for my patrons on Patreon.com/markgaler and images from the lens featured heavily in the seminar. You may also like this short video of India where most of the images featured were captured with the 20-70. th-cam.com/video/BaJa9bMTeYc/w-d-xo.html

    Mark, this is so helpful. There are so many lenses to choose from in the Sony line-up and for someone with less experience thank you, choosing the right lens (not necessarily the technically best lens) is a daunting task. Test charts are great for pixel peepers, but in the real world you want a lens that fits your needs. Thanks.

    Great informative video as always. I did notice that the 24-50 does extend when zooming and that the 24mm is on that fully extended end, which if you shoot mostly wide angle makes this lens quite longer. This is similar to the original 24-70 2.8 GM which had the 24mm on the fully extended side.
    Also, I find it interesting that you often shoot with higher ISO in daylight to keep your shutter speeds quite fast. Do you have a video in which you discuss your preferred exposure techniques in more detail?

I also offer 500-700 page eBooks for Alpha owners, camera setup files and a 2-hour PAL workflow seminar on how I shoot. All of my support for the A9III will be on Patreon. I don't tend to make setup videos for individual cameras that use the same menus as previous cameras. Full Setup would take several hours, hence the CAMSET and the eBook available on Patreon to explain the setup provided by the CAMSET. The eBook covers the peculiarities of the A9III including Pre-capture, Burst Mode and Flash setup to access the maximum t.05 per output of a flash and the correct flash timing.
      If you are already a Patreon can I ask you to use the Patreon forums as questions can become lost on the TH-cam platform due to the sheer volume of requests for support. Thanks.

    Thank you for another great video. You are really the only one doing great comparisons, with size and weight, to other lens option. I’ve had all the others, except for the 20-70/4 G so this was a huge help. I think you may have convinced me to sell my 24, 40, and 50 G trio and exchange for this lens. I can now pack the one lens with either my Batis 85/1.8, or include my 50/1.4 GM if I want shallow depth of field. I do also have Sigma’s 28-70/2.8 which I’ve also used. Now will Sony do some kind of wide angle zoom to pair with this like Sigma’s 16-28/2.8? Take care. I will be putting my Patreon membership back in place soon.

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills
      @AlphaCreativeSkills  6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The 24-50 is about as large as I am prepared to go when using a compact A7C body - even the 20-70 F4 G and 35mm F1.4 GM feel a bit too heavy for the compact bodies. The decision to use primes or zooms is really just down to preferred workflow - I use two bodies in my camera bag (A7CII and A6700) so I can work either way without having to change lens too often. The advantage of using an A6700 is my 90mm on the APS-C body has a full-frame equivalent angle of view of a 135mm lens. I am also happy to use the E 11mm F1.8 G for the ultra-wide angle-of-view. Happy to discuss these decision at length on my Patreon.com/markgaler support channel.

    Akin to the age old A-mount Minolta AF 24-50mm f/4. Small and handy while still held up well for resolution, that old gem was still good even if paired up with an A99ii. Made before the time manufacturers went down the rabbit hole of fixing vignette and distortion in "camera"

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills
      @AlphaCreativeSkills  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the positive feedback - If an object is 24mm high and when you get to the closest focusing distance of the lens, it appears as 24mm high on the sensor the magnification is 1:1. If the object appears 12mm on the sensor then the magnification is 1:2 or 0.5x magnification.

    The Tamron 20-40 is actually just as interesting as the 24-50 from Sony. Any chance you compare these two in the future? I get the feeling that the 20mm is more useful than the 50mm. Like you mentioned: Just use APS-C for more reach
    The big question is: How much better is the 24-50 as a native lens in regards of auto focus and image quality?

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills
      @AlphaCreativeSkills  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I will leave that interesting comparison test to another reviewer. Logistics of conducting these type of comparison tests are often not possible when trying to meet launch deadlines.
      I used the 24-50 to capture sports images in this review to test that the AF speed was fast enough for sport, but not every photographer needs this AF speed - which is why many are interested in saving money by purchasing the Tamron or Sigma lenses instead. Some my also not need corner sharpness when photographing wide open.

    32:19 how do you handle the insane amount of CA's of the 85? I now had two copy's of the lens and both had terrible amount of chromatic aberrations even at low-medium contrast areas. They only went away when lower than f3.5-f4. Would love a 60 2.5 or 85 2.5 in the style of the pancake trio

      You can remove them in Lightroom by taking the eyedropper (in the manual tab) over the problematic color and then clicking. Most people can only see them uncorrected if they zoom in to 100% - and that would be precisely 0% of images shared via social media.

    The 24-50 f2.8 + a7c R combo is making me want to change systems. For event work, photojournalism, reportage, etc it's honestly a perfect range and size as a combo.
    I wish that every manufacturer would release a compact limited range f2.8 zoom. I do 80% of my photography with 28, 35, 40, and 50 primes with occasional crops when using the 50 and I need slightly more range. It's basically the workflow you described.
    With all these high resolution sensors I really don't need my zoom to go out to 70 or 85. I will use an 85 Prime if I really need that range.
    Honestly I could get by with even a 28-50. It's actually bizarre that the we haven't seen an f2.0 18-35 type of compact APSC zoom from Fuji or someone because the apsc 2.8 zooms don't give the same background separation due to the crop factor, so noone has really tried to match that for APSC bodies.

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills

      The Tamron lens does not have an AF/MF button, Custom Button, Aperture Ring or de-click switch. It will not be compatible with the Focus Breathing Compensation feature and will not have the AF speed required to keep up with the A9 and A1 cameras. It may also be incompatible with Sony's Focus Assist feature. It is, however, the only other truly compact F2.8 zoom to consider, in my opinion, if size and weight is a priority. If optical quality is the priority between these two options and the difference in focal range does not sell one above the other I would choose the Sony.

    It is a very interesting lens, but I used to use Minolta's more lightweight and compact 24-50mm f/4 lens, but the fact that this type of lens "only zooms 2x" is a bottleneck that prevents me from using it. Today, it may be in demand for everyday video use.
    I would consider the cheaper, higher quality and faster 24mm f/4 GM to be a lens that zooms from 24mm f/1.4, 35mm f/2 and 50mm f/2.8, using APS-C mode and cropping.

      Some photographers can justify way more than US $1009 when they are spending 3K on an A7CR, 2.3K on a 24-70 GM or 9K for a Leica. Expense is relative - that's why it's great that Sigma and Tamron offer E-Mount lenses for those photographers who are on a slimmer budget. Canon users, unfortunately, don't get this option.

    If this new lens resolves good on my A7RV, then I’m definitely buying it! Wow 11 aperture blades on a G lens with internal zoom!

      Internal Focus but not internal Zoom. Not so much extension, however, as to upset a modern gimbal.

    Sooooo, 50 is closer to 75 than 24 to 28?) do not think so… for commercial studio work tamron 28-75 is still no brainer

    • @AlphaCreativeSkills
      @AlphaCreativeSkills  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes I stand by my view that the advantage of the angle-of-view difference between 24 and 28 is greater than that of 70 to 75 for a working photographer - especially when you crop to 75 in post (or take one step closer to your subject) but cant' crop to 24 when using a 28.

      What Mark means, 50 is easy to get 75 through post crop. However, if for portrait shots, original 75 f2.8 still has good bokeh, while 50 f2.8 will become 75 F4.2 equivalent so we won’t have good bokeh.

      @@jonoy4375thinking in this way may lead you to buy 50mpix Leica Q3 (or Q2?) with fixed 28mm lens, because you can crop photos. In fact, it is very cheap math trick to motivate people to buy more and more Sony lenses, primes, bodies etc. And it is true Sony marketing policy: you need to buy more. Thats why 24-70 costs a ton of money. And they implement artificial limitations for Tamron and Sigma like 15 fps limit, and no teleconverters with Sigma 70-200.

      This 24-50 is for photographers who are frustrated by changing primes when the shooting situation is constantly changing. I can change lenses quite quickly and also have the option to use two camera bodies in my camera bag ...with two different focal lengths. I could, for instance have one camera with the FE 24mm F2.8 G and another with the FE 50mm F2.5 ...to avoid using a zoom. This zoom is, however, very nice :-)

      I have the 40G as well, & it’s really a great sharp compact lens. I turns my 7CR camera into a true compact. I found it also renders video beautifully using pp11 -cinematic profile.

    It’s sad to see kids at pride marches. A pride march is about sexuality, and kids shouldn’t be sexualised, nor involved in anything overtly sexual. Nice lens though.

      Statistically safer than a church or sports team or family event. At least they're not in those places where they're orders of magnitude more likely to be abused. That's what you're concerned about, right? Or are you just looking for opportunities to be a bigot?

      I photograph without involving my own politics. All I can say on the matter, however, is that it would be difficult for a kid to avoid discussions about sexuality when both your parents are of the same sex.
