For me the most attractive feature is the compact size and still covering 24, 35, and 50mm focal length, which could replace the prime f2.5 lenses if the image quality was good enough. This could be a good alternative for street photographers that strives for compact and large enough aperture.
More options is always good but I do think it's going to struggle a tad given it has three direct competitors (size and weight wise). Most similar - Tamron 20-40 2.8 More versatile - 20-70 f4 or Sigma 28-70 2.8 (excluding tamron's 28-75 as its considerably bigger) Not for me but more options won't hurt.
Most of us are looking to minimize the number of lenses we need to buy, so I think its a "dont bother with a kit zoom and a bunch of budget primes lens" , fast enough to soften backgrounds and better in low light than kit zooms, this AND a 150- 600 telle , OR a super wide or a macro and as a hobbyist depending on your interests thats going to cover a lot of situations.
In my opinion, an amazing lens to go with the Tamron 35-150mm f2.0 - f2.8. Gets you those ultra wide shots, with a little zoom for versatility, with a low aperture
For Street Photography and Travel I think the Tamron 20-40mm makes more sense. I have an old Pentax-F 24-50mm F4 which I love for street/urban shooting on Pentax, but would love a modern version for my Sony as I would value a more compact zoom over the F2.8 aperture. I may go with the Tamron though
I like the Tamron 20-40 2.8 better. It's a bit smaller and I like the shift towards the wider end. However, the Tamron is missing the apature ring if that is something you need.
For everyone saying "if this was a 20-50mm it would be perfect" I want to remind everyone that the Tamron 20-40mm f2.8 exists, and is a pretty great lens.
I wanted to add a 7 month update, I took the 20-40mm on a thru hike of the PCT and for over 2000mi it performed like a champ. Rock solid performance, great for astrophotography, vlogging, and light portraiture work. So so happy with it.
I had it for about a year. It was a great lens. i think its biggest downfall for me was its low light performance. for some reason I could not get it to focus great in low light situations
Whenever you touch a Tamron, you can feel how cheap it was. Maybe if you’re a professional, you just care about results, you want to min-max cost/profit, but I, as a hobbyist, want to also feel good about using my gear. Just like with cars performance isn’t everything; you don’t want hard, scratchy plastics or cheap cloth on the seats, you want soft-touch materials, nicely damped switches, soft leather… Oh and besides feeling cheap, you don’t get a function button, aperture ring, breathing comp.
@@houserhythm I'm a professional and not once have I used the function button on any of my lenses that she's them. Would a AF/MF switch be nice, yes. Does it take less then 2 seconds to switch MF/AF using buttons on my camera also yes. Sure some Sony glass feels nice in the hand but honestly as long as it gets the job done, produces a great image, and doesn't feel uncomfortable to hold I don't really care if it feels like plastic.
I think this is aimed to displace those three little G primes they came out with a few years back. I believe the fastest of those was f/2.5. This lens covers the range of all three at a similar aperture and not much more price or size. I think you’re right on with its use as a street/travel lens.
It has nothing in common with small G primes, other than focal range. People buy those primes for the reason they want small and light and this zoom is not. Moreover, people would choose one, not three of those primes, the one that fit their needs most.

Better to have more choice than less. E mount is all about finding the perfect lens for your creative vision, often at a massive discount over other systems.
The 24mm being fully extended is a hard pass from me. I was really hoping this was staying zoom all internal. THAT would have made this lens VERY interesting.

Sounds like a good lens to offer as a kit lens on a new body. I’m hoping to get a 2.8 which crosses the 70mm barrier as photographing events 70mm can be too distant for performers at the back of the stage, so use the 70-200mm but that is not wide enough when their at the front of the stage. Am considering the tamron 35-150 but hoping Sony might come out with some thing lighter… Wouldnt have noticed the frame rate if you’d not said any thing
24-50? Hmm.... Truly at $1100 USD? Why? Anyone who will buy this should just buy the most excellent Sigma 24-70 DG DN f2.8 ART. See Christopher Frosts review and you will see how much this lens actually needs in camera corrections. Its insane. Love the review though Chris and Jordan. Good job!
Not bad. I'm all in for compact, light lenses that don't break the bank. But in this case, I would prefer the wider focal range of the 20-70 f4. It's about the same weight, size and price, and if you can step back, it would give you almost the same shallowness of depth of field at 70mm at f4 as you would get with this lens at 50mm at f2.8. That all being said, I know there would be situations where the need of an extra stop would trump everything else.
Jordan, what’s happening to Chris’s knees during the sitting shot during the video performance section? It only happens there but was curiosity it was a focusing thing of that lens for the Panasonic or just a rendering thing?
I recently bought a used Sony 24-105mm F4 like new. I personally feel it is more practical for All-In-One lens for travel. I am more in photography than videograohy. Aperture F4 is good enough for me. Ultimately, it really depends on your core preference.
I feel like one use for this lens is for someone who would be bringing the 24-70/2.8, but also some sort of a telephoto. This is cheaper and lighter than the 24-70, and if you also have a 70-200, you probably don’t need to fully cover the focal length gap. If you don’t need the 2.8, sure, the 20-70/4 makes sense, but if you do, I could easily see this having benefits over a 24-70 or 28-75. That said, the lens would probably be more special as a 22-45.
For street travel on A7cii or A7CR would you use either that and 85 1.8 or would you take Sony 24mm f/2.8 G, 40mm f/2.5 G or 35 2.8 with 85 1.8 with you, for street do you prefer ligher/smaller on camera or to switch lenses? Also would you wait for the A7V instead because the A7Cii sensor is a 2021 sensor left over from the A7IV?
Thanks for another great review. Its good to see Sony providing so many options, and I welcome this with open arms. I think its a perfect size light weight and compact, this will go really well in combination with an 85mm FF equivalent for my wedding season. pretty much job done.
Wow. 60 fps is so different. I don't like it. It feels... cheaper somehow. Anyway - I wish there was a 25-50 f/2 like that m43 lens but for sony emount
Would you recommend this lens (Sony 24-50mm) or the Sigma 28-70mm/Tamron28-75mm lens for an all-in-one, compact lens? I know the Sony is a tiny bit smaller and shorter than the others and you get the extra Sony in-body features (focus breathing compensation, etc.), but you also lose 20ish extra mm of reach and it is a few hundred dollars more. Just wanting an extra opinion!
Already have a 24-70 F2.8 GM II with a A7C ii, but suddenly feels like to have a lighter lens like this... But I'm worried about the focal length to be lost. Don't really like an F4 lens as I'm planning to go to Istanbul, maybe will visit a bazaar.
Is it possible Sony is planning on releasing something like a 50-150 f2.8 to pair with this lens? That might make sense to have a light, fast, affordable kit with a smaller aperture range than the usual 24-70, 70-200 combo.
I have the 20-70F4, and 24G, 40G, 50G lenses. This is an interesting lens for sure. If I didn't have the 20-70 I would strongly consider it. But it's easy to go down the fast aperture rabbit hole, with why stop at f2.8 get faster primes. And will say I do find I use the 20mm focal length a lot on the 20-70 f4. So yes, tempting but I think I will sit this one out.
Who is it for? Missed a really big possibility, video users. I'm looking for a studio lens and this is hitting all my boxes and then some. Vlogging would be probably amazing on this too.
Who is this lens for? Maybe me. I'm putting together a travel kit and this lens might work well with the 16-25 G. I already have an A7CR, A7CII, and the 70-200 G II.
Still praying for a Sony 24-105 2.8 .. I know they can make it smaller than the Canon version.. it won’t be lightweight regardless but could definitely be the one lens event use
Not for me. Much more interested in the 20-70 f4. That covers all three of my favorites; 20, 35, and 60-65. If a zoom in the wide/standard realm doesn't cover at least two of those, it's not for me. Would love to see some more zoom options that start or end at 35mm. A 20-35 f2.8 and 35-70 f2.8 (or maybe 35-80 even?) would have been sweet. But the 16-25 and 24-50 don't do much for me.
Does anyone else think it's time for an updated/upgraded 24-240mm? I'd love to see even 24-200mm at a constant f4 and hopefully a decent closeup capability... I'd pay up and deal with some weight for this.
It is a good option to pull people into full frame. It’s cheaper than Sony 16-55mm F2.8. You cut off the wide a bit. Yet you can then move to full frame in the near future and still have glass.
My choice is still the 20-70, same size, WAY more range, even better macro capabilities. Definitely more important to get the shot, instead of getting it at f/2.8
1/120 shutter for 60fps is wrong and too much. Just ask Gerald Undone but even without that it's obvious. The motion is jerky and there's no proper motion blur. Odd to see such a "rookie mistake" from Pros. The 180 rule simply isn't something you can rely on in all situations generally
I don't quite understand the point of this lens either, especially in a world where the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 and Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 lenses exist on E mount for less money. It doesn't seem to be optically exceptional. If Sony wanted to make a 24-50mm zoom lens, they could have made an f2 version that is like carrying three primes. But this one is neither fish nor fowl.
The Sigma is really heavy this one and the 20-70mm f/4 g are much lighter and smaller Coming from the GH5 before the a7siii , my lenses were much smaller. I was happy when Sony 2 years ago started making smaller lenses that I wanted
If it was an f/2...then I'd be interested. And with the good but not elite autofocus speeds, I don't see a purchase for it unless you really need those 4mm at the wide over the additional 20-25mm you get with the Sigma or Tamron offerings.
Technical note: If the sharpness at 24 mm at the image egde would be limited by distortion correction, it would do so at F2.8 and F5.6. This lens is just badly corrected at the frame edges. Btw: It doesn't seem to be "compact" to me.
I would love to see the following comparison. Two photographers shooting a wedding. One with standard equipment and another skilled photographer using an iPhone. I’d like to see the results compared from the same wedding. And I’d like to ensure the iPhone photographer knew how to use the iPhone properly and was as skilled in composition as the photographer using the digital camera.
It seems this focal range is proving popular among commenters here but honestly, I think I'd just find it frustrating. A 24 or 28 to 70 is more practical, and for specific applications like street (as mentioned by a few people here), I'm more comfortable with a single focal length. I haven't come away feeling like I'd benefit from this lens, but that's just me. I'm just pleased there's so much choice in FE mount lenses these days.

I recently bought a used Sony 24-105mm F4 like new. I personally feel it is more practical for All-In-One lens for travel. I am more in photography than videograohy. Aperture F4 is good enough for me. Ultimately, it really depends on your core preference.
24 fps looks much more relaxed than 60 fps. Please make sure Jordan won't forget his ND filters again!
If it were a 20-50mm I would have purchased it. In my mft days I loved the PL1025mm. Only downside is that It was huge
The Tamron 20-40mm f2.8 exists and is pretty great
For street travel on A7cii or A7CR would you use either that and 85 1.8 or would you take Sony 24mm f/2.8 G, 40mm f/2.5 G or 35 2.8 with 85 1.8 with you, for street do you prefer ligher/smaller on camera or to switch lenses?
Also would you wait for the A7V instead because the A7Cii sensor is a 2021 sensor left over from the A7IV?
I rather get the 20-70 F4 and a prime if I need low light
What i really like about this lens is the design it just looks nice to look at especially with the lens hood attached
Thanks for another great review. Its good to see Sony providing so many options, and I welcome this with open arms. I think its a perfect size light weight and compact, this will go really well in combination with an 85mm FF equivalent for my wedding season. pretty much job done.
The music in this one was straight out of Ixion. I approve.
Sigma/Tamron for event work. Sony for street photography
For that coverage, I prefer the Tamron 20-40mm for the wider shot. Plus, it's cheaper too.
Us too.
Already have a 24-70 F2.8 GM II with a A7C ii, but suddenly feels like to have a lighter lens like this... But I'm worried about the focal length to be lost. Don't really like an F4 lens as I'm planning to go to Istanbul, maybe will visit a bazaar.
It would be perfect for that! 😂
Thanks for keeping up with all of these releases!!
Is it possible Sony is planning on releasing something like a 50-150 f2.8 to pair with this lens? That might make sense to have a light, fast, affordable kit with a smaller aperture range than the usual 24-70, 70-200 combo.
Jordan definitely forgot his ND filters because there's no good reason to shoot any standard TH-cam filter at 4K/60. Looking at you, Tony and Chelsea.
Great review!
Found the music track a little distracting though.
My main issue with it is that bokeh, the background rendering is not the best.
24-50 f2 GM and 50-105 f2 GM would be awesome.
A wedding photographer’s dream.
Just picked up the Tamron 20-40 for half the price and more useful coverage.
half the price of the GM, considerably smaller and still viable with aps-c crop
...and an aperture ring. love at first sight
Seems like the audio isn't synched right, but that could be a TH-cam issue.
I say yes we need it. It you like the A7C type camera with the 28-60. Well this gives you a better lens for the compact cameras.
I was in a Rush cover band called the Sappy Gonads
Wow! 3 videos in 2 days 🎉🎉
great decision by sony, as a compact lens, with very high quality, and the 70-200/2.8 is still a must have. Excellent also as a travel zoom.
Compact and affordable? Makes one (almost) want to go back to MFT.
Yeah because they are so small and cheap Like the 10-25mm.
It's going to cost between 1100 and 1300 dollars so I don't know how affordable that is. I much prefer my more affordable and wider Tamron 20-40 lens.
Event reportage. And a Sigma 65f2 or SEL8518 on the second body. Perfectly fine.
So many releases this week! You guys must have been so busy :)
Right, but I shot this format specifically because I didn’t have NDs and needed to cut the light down. 1/125 looks a lot better at 60P than 24P.
The 20-70 F4 weighs 1.68 pounds vs. this 24-50 F2.8 weighs 0.97 pounds but you said roughly same size?
We have sigma 18-50mm on apsc which is 27-75mm full frame. They’re small and compact. That lens should work with a7cii and a7cr.
TH-cam isn't helping the 1080 compression on this one. Bumped it to 4k and what gorgeous production.
Tony would be so proud of the 60 fps
Will Sony make an a7c II kit with this lens?
Nearly Everybody would be happier with a 50mm 1.8 g
I don't quite understand the point of this lens either, especially in a world where the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 and Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 lenses exist on E mount for less money.
It doesn't seem to be optically exceptional.
If Sony wanted to make a 24-50mm zoom lens, they could have made an f2 version that is like carrying three primes. But this one is neither fish nor fowl.
The Sigma is really heavy this one and the 20-70mm f/4 g are much lighter and smaller
Coming from the GH5 before the a7siii , my lenses were much smaller. I was happy when Sony 2 years ago started making smaller lenses that I wanted
No, we did not need. Sony should make a 500mm f5.6GM with 1200g.❤
Maybe good for street? I shoot most photos around f/8-f10 and carry a 28 and 50. This could replace both.
@6:40 what is that vibration?
I love the focal length 24-50 nikon kit Lenz
If it was an f/2...then I'd be interested. And with the good but not elite autofocus speeds, I don't see a purchase for it unless you really need those 4mm at the wide over the additional 20-25mm you get with the Sigma or Tamron offerings.
Technical note: If the sharpness at 24 mm at the image egde would be limited by distortion correction, it would do so at F2.8 and F5.6.
This lens is just badly corrected at the frame edges.
Btw: It doesn't seem to be "compact" to me.
man, must've been cold if the camera start's shivering at 6:34 lol (the downside of ibis thinking it's moving when it isn't.)
Gimbal was getting blown around by the wind.
@@PetaPixel That was the other option, it happens. Put up a good fight though.
Was Jordan also filming on this lens as theres some awful juddering at 6:40?
The wind was blowing the gimbal really hard. Not a lens issue.
6:32 what is that camera jitter/shake?
