Yeah in the book he was pissed about a doctor saying "well at least your not going to be deaf". And he was like "Thank you for explaining that taking out my eye wont make me deaf. Im in such good hands."
I feel you. When I start writing a novel, my original and final drafts compare like this: Original: Realistic plot, realistic problem, realistic climax, one of the main characters turns on one of the others and murders them, Final: Realistic plot, realistic problem, realistic climax, one of the characters either moves away or dies due to disease.
What a *great* interview! The interviewer actually knows the book well enough to ask interesting questions, and it's not just short, edited 'sound bite' answers... a real conversation. (Thank you for this.)
+Catherine Harrison he never confirmed that he said books belong to their readers and he feels he has no special privilege as the author to say what happens after the book ends. He says that also in this interview if u pay attention
Catherine Harrison well If that's what you choose to believe. I personally let the story live endlessly in time from where it left. If u are the type of person to need closure then imagine it any way u want but imagining she dies soon after Gus is kinda a shity way to do so. And don't ruin other peoples imaginations by replying to comments where they didn't ask for what "supposedly" happens after the book. It's kinda rude and can ruin someone's day/thoughts on the book
+laura brown I don't need closure on a book, I was simply saying something that the author themselves confirmed. There's no need to be so rude, honestly I wasn't saying anything horrible at all, I was replaying information that was relevant to the comment she made. I was hardly ruining something life by saying that and i'd appreciate it if you didn't act like I did, no one has to accept what I said they can continue to imagine what it could be like themselves I'm not forcing this upon them
I love how you can see the friendship between John, and Nat in this. At times it's less of an interview and more of a filming of a conversation between two friends and colleagues.
I can relate to what John said....I had read the book and knew what was going to happen so I thought I'd be okay watching the movie....I was so wrong! I sat there with tears streaming down my face. Great book and movie!
Ugh. Yes. I'm genuinely so happy I saw this interview. And I agree with Nat. John is my hero. John Green and Chris Colfer are my two real life heroes and inspirations, so, yeah….Well, I do love everything about this. :)
There is a lot I love about this interview, but that little smile that Nat does when John mentions Q in the alternate Paper Towns ending just makes me so excited for the Paper Towns movie....
such a great interview! and the end made me so excited for Nat to play Q and we get to go through an entire making of a movie process again! :D What a ride it's been for TFIOS!
I was obsessed with nat since I was like 7 bc of the naked brothers band and now he's in my favorite movie playing as one of my favorite characters from one of my favorite books I love america when can I move
The movie is just perfect! Way much better than I could've imagined it would be like. Also I used to have a HUGE crush on Nat when the NBB, guess he never stopped being my crush i mean look at him, he's incredibly talented and handsome, I love him
That was so funny. John's first endings are so weird lol. I love that Nat at the end is like "How does that relate to the rest of the book?" Good question.
He actually swears quite a bit, just not on camera. Well, when he's making CrashCourse or Mental Floss, his outtakes are often filled with swearing. Well, beeped out swearing. :)
I love this guy's interviews! I saw his wth Shai and Ansel the other day and it was really good too. Like not only do I love their characters but I love them and Nat too! And of course John lol.
I feel like it's interesting to talk to an author of a movie adaptation of a book because they can give you other ideas they had while writing and all the inside scoop on where the ideas came from. Especially since John Green is so well known by so many people because he created so many things having to do with youtube. It's cool to see the author side and how excited he is for this
i heard something that Hazel and Houten went to Mexico and fought like a gang after augustus died and tried to like honor augustus?? Not sure if that is correct
I think at the end there the cameraman was supposed to stop recording but he didn't XD and I love how as soon as John says "fuck" the camera goes down and stops hahahaha
This is a gem of a video.
Totally.
Yes
agreed
Indeed.
When Nat said he's still deaf I was thinking I thought you were blind LOL
Me too
Yeah in the book he was pissed about a doctor saying "well at least your not going to be deaf". And he was like "Thank you for explaining that taking out my eye wont make me deaf. Im in such good hands."
ashlynn kirkland Actually, Isaac said he'd rather be deaf than blind. And then the doctor said that.
+ashlynn kirkland *you're
too soon
john green is my favorite. i love how he corrects " Its not so much of a flaw, its a disability"
I am crying with laughter at the "alternate endings" - Nat's reaction is priceless
Absolutely.
Love the interviewer -- he knows what he's doing!
You have no idea how encouraging it is to me as a writer that John Green's books all had terrible original endings.
Yes, I do.
I feel you. When I start writing a novel, my original and final drafts compare like this:
Original: Realistic plot, realistic problem, realistic climax, one of the main characters turns on one of the others and murders them,
Final: Realistic plot, realistic problem, realistic climax, one of the characters either moves away or dies due to disease.
That was unexpected spoiler
What a *great* interview! The interviewer actually knows the book well enough to ask interesting questions, and it's not just short, edited 'sound bite' answers... a real conversation.
(Thank you for this.)
I love that John harpoons Nat for saying 'shit' and then precedes to say 'fuck', himself/
John says fuck all the time; he just keeps it out of his youtube videos
Gingerweasly to be fair, he didn't say it until the dude had wrapped up the interview, it's not his fault the camera guy kept rolling
13:05 "after Gus dies"
*immediately covers mouth and widens eyes*
NAT YOU CUTIE
''John tricked me into loving him'' so cute!
margos hand reaching up through the rubble!! hahahahaah oh my godd
"he wouldn't. that's not like paul." HAHA I LOVE THIS
John green's alternative ending made me cry in laughter!!! And nat reactions were too epic!!!
I like to imagine that Hazel and Isaac grow up together and become best friends and tell their children about Augustus.
John Green confirmed that Hazel Grace died a year after Gus did ;-;
+Catherine Harrison he never confirmed that he said books belong to their readers and he feels he has no special privilege as the author to say what happens after the book ends. He says that also in this interview if u pay attention
+Laura brown It was confirmed in another interview actually. I was paying attention.
Catherine Harrison well If that's what you choose to believe. I personally let the story live endlessly in time from where it left. If u are the type of person to need closure then imagine it any way u want but imagining she dies soon after Gus is kinda a shity way to do so. Oh my god. Nat's reactions to the alternate endings were HILARIOUS!! They should've kept the camera rolling a little longer
When Nat said smart kids love john's books, i was like omfg im a stupid kid and i love his books lol
We'll he said it seemed smart kids loved johns books
I'm sure you're very smart! :)
OMG remember when nat was on the naked brothers band on Nickelodeon
OMG I REMEMBER THAT IT WAS JUST YAS 🙌
I remember the Naked Brothers Band on Nickelodeon. I didn't even realize that was him until you said it. He looks well. Thank you.

OMG YESSSS!!!!! I was like a few years younger than him wen that show came out and i was obsessed w/ him and that show wen i was little
There were so many hints! I never even realized omg.
John green and Nat have such good chemistry + the interviewer lol
the deadpan way in which nat affects mock support for john's having tried the first draft ending is INCREDIBLE. i laughed for a good 5 minutes.
I love how you can see the friendship between John, and Nat in this. At times it's less of an interview and more of a filming of a conversation between two friends and colleagues.
Nat Wolff is so precious and cute!
That ending had me in tears of laughter!
best interview ever!
Omg, I've just found my new favourite interview, John and Nat are the best bromance to exist ever!
The way John speaks and presents himself really inspires me, He truly is the single most fantastic man.

John and Nat is my favorite bromance ever
Nat is handsome.
+NoahOfTheArc Absolutely!
I just want a collection of John's discarded endings as a perk for P4A or something.
I don't care how I get them, but I want to read them all.
Nat Wolff is going to play Isaac and Q. This is amazing!! I remember when he was on Nickelodeon in The Naked Brother's Band!!
Me too, I used to love that show.

Is it weird that I'm absolutely obsessed with Nats voice
I'm in love with these people...All of the cast really. AND John obviously.
I can relate to what John said....I had read the book and knew what was going to happen so I thought I'd be okay watching the movie....I was so wrong! I sat there with tears streaming down my face. Great book and movie!
I loved your book so much!!! I went to see the movie with my love of my life and he cried. The next day I had an asthma attack and he freaked out!!
Ugh. Yes. I'm genuinely so happy I saw this interview. And I agree with Nat. John is my hero. John Green and Chris Colfer are my two real life heroes and inspirations, so, yeah….Well, I do love everything about this. :)
My favorite interview

Awesome interview!! Thanks!!!
the husky voice.
such a great interview! and the end made me so excited for Nat to play Q and we get to go through an entire making of a movie process again! :D What a ride it's been for TFIOS!
I was obsessed with nat since I was like 7 bc of the naked brothers band and now he's in my favorite movie playing as one of my favorite characters from one of my favorite books I love america when can I move

This guy is like the best interviewer ever.
That was so funny. John's first endings are so weird lol. I love that Nat at the end is like "How does that relate to the rest of the book?" Good question.
"we like feet" I'm dying right now
I love how no one can be around Nat for five minutes without cracking up.
i love this interview so much
Omg Nat Wolff is just like me an obsessive Beatle fan and favorite Beatle is Paul
I love how John gets on Nat for saying S*** and then he goes and says F***ing. Bahahahahaha.
I think he thought they had finished rolling :) I never heard him say the F-word before.
He actually swears quite a bit, just not on camera. Well, when he's making CrashCourse or Mental Floss, his outtakes are often filled with swearing. Well, beeped out swearing. :)
Nat's laugh is really emotionless and funny. I love it.
I love this guy's interviews! I saw his wth Shai and Ansel the other day and it was really good too. Like not only do I love their characters but I love them and Nat too! And of course John lol.
Omg I remember watching and listening to NBB.
I feel like it's interesting to talk to an author of a movie adaptation of a book because they can give you other ideas they had while writing and all the inside scoop on where the ideas came from. Literally my favorite interview
"I'm not fucking kidding." -John Green
Best interview!
Thank god that John ended Paper Towns differently... I wouldn't be able to handle another sad ending😂❤️
THATS ME AND MY FRIENDS ON THE NEWSPAPER
John should release that ending for charity, maybe a pledge reward for Project for Awesome 2014.
He loves the Beatles, I love the Beatles. We were made for each other!!!
I love the dispute between "shit" and "shoot" in the middle, but then John blatantly says "fucking" at the end
I have read the book so many times and i really cannot wait for the movie to come out!!! :D
Clevelander here! :) This was such a huge deal here, it was nuts!

Remeber the times when nat was on the nickelodeon show the naked brothers band!

I love when Nat cursed and they were like 'no cursing in the video" and he was like "I didn't curse, I said shoot.
OMG this is like a treasure on the internet.
That's exactly how I felt after seeing the movie I ended to tell people I love how much they mean to me
