    Could you do some plant based food brands? Parent companies to Gardein, beyond beef, impossible, quorn, oatly, milkademia. With so many options nowadays it would be nice to hear about more of these.

      I absolutely agree! After doing a whole semester-long project on beyond meat, their practices are shady at best. They promote themselves first as a 'health food' (plant-based meats are super high in sodium) and secondly as sustainable. Their focus should be on the environment, then animal welfare, and then human health (unless they plan on becoming a low sodium non-processed food). They also should move towards more sustainable packaging.

      I think they should have the option to omit stuff like butter, sour cream, cream cheese, etc. that are common groceries people have in their fridge. But only a few jeans in the collection are certified, which basically makes it glaringly obvious the rest is from slave labor. Seeing the amount of clothing that is produced and shipped to Target everyday, I think it’s impossible for any Target clothing like to be considered sustainable.

    Apologies if this has already been addressed in another of your videos, but you briefly touched on the issue here. I'm seeing a lot of brands proudly proclaiming themselves "palm oil free" and I think we're all pretty well aware of the issues around palm plantations, but I'm curious to know what brands are using in the place of palm oil in these products? Because if it's just another monoculture crop with the same detriments as palm, I really don't know how it's any better, and I suspect we may be being greenwashed into thinking we've chosen a more sustainable option. Anyway, super well researched and interesting video as always!

    • @mickb.8925
      @mickb.8925 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I think that the only difference between palm oil and for example macadamia nut oil is that palm oil is much more widely used. If palm oil would be successfully boycotted, than we would just shift the problem towards a different crop.

    • @anyawillowfan
      @anyawillowfan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yes. Palm oil isn't necessarily bad if produced responsibly, and often the alternatives are actually worse for the environment. But unfortunately brands are changing to meet demand (which is usually a good thing, but in this case means it's better marketing to be palm-oil free than to use ethically produced palm oil).

They had some serious controversy over having a lot of Bangladesh manufacturing, including in the building that burned down a few years back killing many workers. They also moved the main marketing/design/etc office of Athleta out of a certified LEED building in Petaluma, CA to their HQ in San Francisco, which also meant a lot of people either lost their jobs or had to leave them (since that's a hefty commute every day).

    If you do the bigger brands can you do primark please? ´Cause after our second lockdown when shop reopened I’ve noticed they have a “BIO” “sustainable” part with closings, product and home goods and I’m pretty sure they are green brain washing everybody.
    Thank you, love your video ♥️

    Thank you for all your research, Shelby! My argument for buying Levi's used to be that at least their jeans are really good quality so they'd last me a long time, but the last two pairs of jeans that I bought wore out soooo quickly - within a year. So unless they bring their quality back to what it used to be, it's a no from me.
    As for a future video, I'd love to hear your thoughts on Twothirds and Toms!

    I know this would not necessarily be part of this series, but I would also love to see a video on all the different certifications I should be looking for on various products. I have heard of B Certified because of you and Levi Hildebrand and your videos have also taught me about Cradle to Cradle Certified, but there just seem to be a lot of different types of certifications out there that I know nothing about. If I were to see them on a website, I am not sure I would know that was a positive thing. Are there any certifications that are so bottom of the barrel they are not even worth paying attention to?

    Regarding Levi's lack of third party verifications, the company is kind of the front runner in converting from a linear to a circular economy in the US. Rather than specifically focusing on sustainable production, they are focusing on building repurposing infrastructure for denim and jean notions in general, which is pricey and time consuming for any company. (They joined an environmental science committee session at UNC while I was an undergrad and explained the actual mindset. Their website summaries don't give their work enough credit.)

    Shelbi, just wanted to say that I really like this format of video. I think sometimes not sustainable brands are making efforts to be more sustainable and being cancelled for not doing enough while sometimes "sustainable" brands are not being really transparent. It's nice to have a scale of sustainability that isn't a yes/no binary and recognize the steps some brands are taking while calling out the nonsense some are spewing.

      For real. What’s the point of using reusable cups if the baristas still have to (or choose to) use a disposable cup to make your drink? They don’t wash said cup but rather throw it away..... & the incentive for using reusable cups with them isn’t really worth it

    I loved the shout out to parents for Hello Fresh. Haha. I haven't done meal delivery but being eco-conscious but also juggling two littles, in a pandemic, has made me consider these just to save my sanity (as I have been using our CSA, but so much has gone to waste due to lack of time, etc). So, thanks for relieving the extreme amounts of guilt I've had about even pondering this alternative.
