    Can you talk about Unilever? I tried explaining to my family (who care somewhat about the planet but only when its easy) why they shouldn't buy Seventh Generation, and they claim that the reason other companies are more sustainable is because "they're small so no one has gone into depth about them, they haven't been investigated yet" which I'm not sure exactly what that means. But a video would be helpful.

    Edit: there’s just so much green washing these days and consumers are misled or confused about where their “eco friendly” makeup items end up. Thank you!!

    • @TcFW97TCM
      @TcFW97TCM 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So compostable things that go into the landfill just create methane gas and that's a problem.

    • @Shelbizleee
      @Shelbizleee  3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      Hi! biodegradable & compostable are not the same thing. Biodegradable is not a defined term & different brands define it differently. Nothing breaks down in a landfill including compostable materials like food & therefore, a compostable sponge will not either. Those items need water, oxygen, and sunlight to break down properly which they do not receive in a landfill. Now, that doesn't mean that an "eco-sponge" is then not a good option. If the brand is using plant based and/or recycled materials it is better (in my opinion) than buying any ole sponge & throwing it out when you're done. I know I've explained it somewhere before, I would assume in the video you're referring to but there is a huge lack of brands doing sustainable beauty and so I just do the best I can. I've used the sponge I have from eco-tools for way too long but I think a brush would last much longer & therefore be a more zero waste option if that is your main concern. But I'm personally shifting my focus from only looking at the end of a products lifecycle & thinking about the entire lifecycle. AKA, if it made from plant based materials & recycled materials (which the eco-sponges are). But still, they are not compostable, at least not the ones I've seen. Hope that helps!

However I am now transitioning into making my own laundry detergent, dish soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste etc from basic simple ingredients. I’ll see how that goes. Thank you Shelbi! Great video. Here’s an idea for a new one: brands that have been around forever and are big, but are now doing nice things. For example: levis strauss. They are massive, probably not as sustainable as others but they are doing really good things like launching levis secondhand or having levis tailor shops like levis haus in London where they fix, re-purpose broken denim etc. they also ise sustainable materials like hemp. I think that seeing big brands do this actually could be a good thing to increase awareness on people that are not yet environmentalists, consumeristic etc etc. they need to see that another option is possible :)

    Seriously cannot express enough how much I GREATLY appreciate these videos from you. I very recently happened upon your channel from other creators I watch, and I have loved every single video you've made so far, especially ones like this or whenever you break down things in detail. I have really come to trust your word. Last year I guess I "officially" started making huge changes in my lifestyle, all centered around conscious consumption and sustainability. I finally took big steps, like switching to shampoo bars, (already always used bar soap for body), toothpaste tablets, dish soap bars, blueland detergent tabs, thinx period underwear (most recent!), diet changes, and so so much more. It took a long time to get where I am, a ton of research and gradually making changes in every aspect of my life. I have never been happier. And your videos have helped me find new brands or feel comfortable and safe with brands I've heard of before. You're awesome and badass

      @@user-pf5kt7dq9n Since the 1990s that I know of, Nestle have been paying doctors in the 3rd world to push their formula milk for babies rather than breastmilk. Families can't afford it and were a) watering it down, b) didn't have access to clean water, c) spent all their money on formula to the detriment of the rest of the family. I know Pakistani/Indian women in this country who think it's better to feed Nestle's formula, from the aggressive sellin back home, than breast milk - I usually try to change their mind.
