Graham Norton became somewhat famous in Britain as a result of his appearance in Father Ted and went on to become one of the UKs top talk show hosts as a result of that fame. Norton appears in only 3 episodes of Father Ted and has comparatively little screen time in any of the episodes he appears in, but the character was so memorable it established Norton in the UK. From what I understand Norton was a well known Stand up comedian in Ireland prior to his appearances in Father Ted, but he was basically unknown in Britain. This is the role that made him a household name.

Well, good for him! And I found it hilarious in "Father Ted". Being from Italy, I know nothing about his career as a tv presentator, or as host, as you would say... but I'm glad he's still doing well to this days! :)

He had won the Perrier Award for his stand-up, so was known, but not widely with the general public. On the comedy circuit he was already sort of a god. Then his episodes as Fr Noel made everyone know him. He started on television doing a sex show, then Channel 4 gave him a chat show, So Graham Norton. Later on the BBC lured him to them and he became one of their greats.
As well as an actor, award-winning comedian, and top chat show host, and a superb radio presenter, he now produces award-winning wines and writes award winning novels, as well as an acclaimed autobiography. There seems to be nothing he does that he isn't brilliant at. He is the ultimate all-rounder.

Also, your first "Father Larry Duff" gag - Graham and Arthur totally peaked there at the start of that running joke - just chef's kiss! I'm not sure the rest are as simple or as outrageously funny as that first one, but I'll let you two decide going forward...

The "Magic Road" is a reference to "Gravity Hills" which are a place where a slight downhill slope appears to be an uphill slope due to the layout of the surrounding land, creating the optical illusion that water flows uphill or that a car left out of gear will roll uphill. There's lots of them all over the world including one in your state Maryland. If you want to see it go to Burkittsville, it's on the Gapland road (W Main Street).

There is a road near to where I live in Northern Ireland called the magic Brae, where things rollup the hill. Cars, balls, anything rollable that you put on the road, and it is true in that they appear to roll up the hill.
I think it is an optical illusion, as the surrounding land runs down slope, the road looks like it runs against the surrounding area downslope, but it is actually a slight incline uphill.

Mrs Doyle doing the 'go on, go on, go on' skit was used by the government here in the UK to remind us to do our annual tax returns if we're not on PAYE. It's complicated... most people in the UK do not have to do a tax return, it's taken at source directly from your employer to the government every time you get paid. It's called Pay As You Earn, hence PAYE. Probably covers 75% of tax payers. The other 25% are those who earn a lot, are self employed, very rich or have a complex financial life, then you need to do an annual tax return. That government ad used to scare me shitless as my tax return was never ready on time.

If you want to know more about the Roddy Doyle stuff. There was a trilogy of movies based on his books, all based in a fictional Satellite town/suburb of Dublin called Barrytown. They are called The Commitments, The Snapper and The Van. All are great comedies in their own right and there's no order you need to watch them in because while some actors are in more than one, they are never playing the same characters and none of the stories cross over. The Van is my favourite.

Ah yes, for almost all of us in England, this was our first encounter with Graham Norton. Or, as he was known nationally the day after, "Who TF was THAT??"
His Father Ted appearances led him to get his "So Graham Norton" show on Channel 4 in the UK. Very camp, very naughty. On a New Years Eve show, he connected live to Raquel Welch in the US who started to say (genuinely) that she found the content of his show so far debauched, so he told her to stop being boring and cut her off. Given how beloved La Welch has always been in Britain, it was a brave and foolish move - but it was also the moment that assured him status. He's the cheeky end of the BBC establishment, now, but he also happens to be (I believe) a really nice bloke who goes wild rambling in showbiz but manages to never get lost there.
