There still isn't a demonstration in the UK today without at least one "Down with this sort of thing!" or a "Careful now!" placard.
And if we’re not holding it, we’re either saying it or thinking it
Also very common in Ireland, as are the catchphrases. You don't get one without the other.
It’s a running gag throughout the show that Father Ted explains that “The money was only resting in my account”.
The joke about Wexford was Ted saying that he missed "the buzz of the big city" but he comes from Wexford which is a small town on the Irish coast. At a guess I would say there's probably about 20K people living in Wexford town at a maximum.
Wexford city has 18,163 people as of mid '23. Wexford County has 163,919 people as of 30 May 2023.
As somoene who grew up in teh Canadian stix where the nearest town had, like, one or two traffic lights, I can relate
The "You went to Las Vegas, whilst that poor child was supposed to be in Lourdes!" line is brilliant. Juxtaposes a religious town where the terminally ill go to seek miraculous recovery and spiritual healing against a place known as the City of Sin.
Great to see you’ve discovered one of the finest comedy’s ever written.
Friends started a couple of years before Father Ted. Friends and Frasier were peaking here when Ted first aired. It was a gold period in a way for comedy.
Except the american stuff isnt as funny as Father ted.
I’m glad you guys are loving Father Ted so much! The Passion of St. Tibulus was one of my favourite episodes of the show. Trust me…the best is yet to come! It gets even better with Series 2 & 3!
I can't wait to see them react to the episode where they go to the caravan, or the mainland.
They get better each season. By the time you finish them you will inevitably feel the sadness of not having any more. For such a bizarre and at times surreal comedy, you will be surprised how attached you get to the characters.
He didnt spend the churches money it was just “resting” in his account as he says
A piece of wildly irrelevant trivia for you boys. Father Hernandez was played by Derrick Branche, who as a youngster was at boarding school in India with Farrock Bulsara a.k.a Freddie Mercury.
Derrick Branche (born 1947) is a British actor, best known for his role in the film My Beautiful Laundrette and television roles in The Jewel in the Crown and Father Ted.
Freddie Mercury was his classmate in the school, with whom he formed The Hectics, Mercury's first band, from 1959 to 1962.
Derrick Branche was in Only When I Laugh a British television sitcom made by Yorkshire Television for ITV. It aired between 29 October 1979 and 16 December 1982 and was set in the ward of an NHS hospital. Richard Wilson, "I don't believe it" was Mr. Gordon Thorpe, the consultant surgeon
The bit with the 2 old ladies outside the cinema talking about the Crying Game - "And he got his Lad out" Lad being an Irish term for the Male appendage
Father Ted looks old because it is set in rural Ireland, it is like going back in time. The joke was that Ted enjoyed life in a Big City parish. Wexford is a city in the sense that it is one of the largest towns on the South Coast with a thriving arts scene but you could easily walk across it.
Your father Jack impression is great! 'Feck off' hahaha!
LOL at the discussion at the end where they're debating how old Father Ted is while the whole time "MCMXCV" (1995) is on screen!
The fighting couple are a stereotype of unhappy married spouses in pre divorce Ireland. Hating each other but still keeping up the facade in public, especially in front of the priest.
My favourite sitcom EVER.
Season 1 is very good. But just you wait til you get to Season 2.......AND ESPECIALLY Season 3!!!!!! Comedy gold 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪✌🏻❤️
Love Father Ted! We never knew how he managed to get away with it!
Don’t miss the end, there is often something after the credits 😉👍🏻
Has anyone suggested a Still Game reaction. It's a hilarious Scottish comedy. Father Ted is equally as funny, love it!
I never get tired of this series! 😆
Since this was shown, any protest or march against anything in Ireland will always have two people holding " Careful Now" and "Down with this sort of thing" signs.
In the cinema Dougal mentions "the commitments" its a great film if you have not seen it for a reaction . You may have a touch of bother with copyright.
Father Hernandez's translator was the series producer, Geoffrey Perkins.
"Down with this sort of thing" placards are satirically waved at almost every protest in the UK.
@@TheLoneMagpie91 My bad. I'm happy with British forces leaving Ireland. Not supporting the death penalty though. Also Russia can bugger off out of Ukraine too.
Brilliant fellas, enjoyed whilst sitting on a roof terrace drinking rum in the sun👍🏽🫶🏽😂😂🤣🤣
It’s pissing down in ireland 😆
@@jamesdonnegan867 😱😱😱
The team always intended to stop at three series, to echo the two of Fawlty Towers. It was just a tragic coincidence that Dermot died the day after fliming the final episode.
As for board games, my family had a favourite when I was growing up called North Sea Oil, though we used to call it simply Oil Rigs. It was a Monopoly-style game that was guaranteed to start arguments and tears. Great fun!
I have a t-shirt with Mary's face and the her quote "Don't talk to me like that ya big pile of shite!"
Knowing what you 2 gents, are going to be seeing in the upcoming episodes is going to be beyond the almighty :) :)
Father Ted, brilliant comedy. All the outdoor filming was done in County Clare in the "Wesht" and the studio filming done in London. A lot of young Irish comedians and actors got there break on the show including a young Graham Norton.
Graham Norton was good in the caravan and airplane episodes.
Ah County Clare, which is closer to Dublin now than it was then.
Shannon Airport is in County Clare and cheaper to use.
It's possible to see Ted being banished to Craggy Island until he's repaid the money he embezzled as a metaphor for Purgatory. Remember the fortune teller in the first episode and the three 'death' cards? One for each priest perhaps? And a band called the Divine Comedy performs the theme tune. Just an idea...
It was made in the ‘90s, but the house is meant to look as though it hasn’t been decorated since the ‘50s or ‘60s.
It seems so old partly because the TV is so old and the tired decor in the bedroom clearly comes from the seventies - as you might expect in a far-flug parochial house.
Just a heads-up, there is often a final scene after the credits you won't want to miss.
Of all the comedies you mentioned, Father Ted was the newest.
MASH 1972-1983
Cheers 1982-1993
Seinfeld 1989-1998
Frasier 1993-2004
Friends 1994-2004
Father Ted 1995-1998
It looks old because that is how it's styled. It's a small island in the back of nowhere and they don't have loads of money to live on.
I say, great reaction chap's, well played. My favourite episode is when they go in holiday, one of the greatest scenes of all time.
Is that the caravan holiday with the wrong caravan and the man that chases them? Is Graham Norton in that one too with terrified into singing young people and Jack in the corner with a box over his head?
@marywood8794 yep, that's the one, these are small and those are far away lol, one of the funniest things I've ever heard
@@paulbriggs5238 If they think it's crazy now, wait until they see that! Lol
@@marywood8794 it just gets better and better, so funny
Oh come on now - the Lourdes fund money was just resting in his account.
The best response of the real film (Mel Gibson's 'The Passion of the Christ') this episode was parodying was "How can you blaspheme against something that doesn't exist?".
This was made in the 90s. So your response would be a very dumb one indeed.
Fun fact, there's a reference of the protest sign "Down with this sort of thing" in Grand Theft Auto 5.
Guys, I am loving these reactions. Keep em coming! :D
Father Ted was scheduled to have a few remakes in the USA which never panned out. Both Steve Martin and John Michael Higgins were cast as Ted in different versions.
Monopoly has also helped prisoners, was designed to give prisons stuff to help them escape
I don't know if it's still the case, but the Watershed cinema in Bristol used to show classic movies at midday on Sundays and you could get a full English breakfast in the café beforehand.
Mary and Tom (the couple in the shop) were a joke on the way a lot of Irish married couples really hated each other but would act really lovey dicey in front of the church
Need to remember divorce was illegal in Ireland until june 1996
Ah RIP Anne, thats Ed Sheeran granny. Lived up the road from me here in Gorey Wexford. Lovely woman. Bill was her husband and he came from Derry so over the border. Wexford is the sunny south east so alot nicer weather than craggy island 😂. Lads father Ted is great craic altogether. We never missed an episode when it was on the telly. Just need a cuppa tea ☕ go on go on 😁
who is Anne?
I dread to think how bad and watered down Father Ted would've become if it got a US remake as no doubt it would've way overrun its welcome when a three series run is just enough for any sitcom, otherwise things get very stale very quickly from then on.
Down With That Sort of Thing is a real thing. In the entertaining history series Reeling in the Years which covers Irish history from the 50s to the Noughties, there is one particular episode relating to the early 80s where one elderly lady dressed in black can be seen carrying such a sign at an anti-abortion rally in Dublin. A few minutes later, the documentary shows a protest march in support of the unemployed, I think, and yes, there she is, the same lady in black carrying the same placard: an all-purpose sign designed by a seasoned protestor 😂
While you were discussing it's year of release, it was at the bottom of the screen in Roman Numerals...1995 😂😉
Bro, I love the lads but, ummm, American!
@@stewrmo Bro, obviously, which is why I was telling them 🤦♂️
@@davidbirchall832 I was agreeing with you .
Bishop Brennan is a fantastic character. You'll be seeing a lot more of him.... :)
The Wexford joke was just to do with Ted saying he wanted to be "back in the big city" etc....
Wexford isn't a big city LOL
I think that "it looks old" because the budget was low, but nothing can keep good writing down!
I thought it was done deliberately to look old.
The jokes definitely weren't old, that's for sure. They got away with stuff you probably wouldn't get away with now, humour has gotten so regressive. American humour is in the gutter when it comes to smut and sex stuff, that has gotten out of hand, but they are so politically correct with everything else.
@@vallee3140 Its deliberately decrepit looking, the house, the dreary landscape, the relentlessly grey skies.
@@paulinegallagher7821 thats what I said🙂
@@vallee3140 I didn't think of that. I suppose the rectory could have looked out dated to show how little money the church put into this horrible parish on this crazy island! Lol
Down with this sort of thing!
Literally one day after finishing filming the final episode for season 3, Dermot Morgan (Ted) suffered a heart attack and died. I was in high school when Father Ted began and still in it when Father Ted finished. RIP. :(
I bet that someone's last words will have been "You owe me 300 for landing on Mayfair" ... lol
That money was only resting in his account!
Brilliant... After ofah.. This is the funniest sitcom going 👍
As father Crilley would tell you himself "that money was only 'resting' in his account"
15:04 GTA V: If you've ever played it, there's an easter egg to the _"Down with this sort of thing"_ sign. Google image search "GTA V, down with this sort of thing" and you'll see a pedestrian protester with a "Down with this sort of thing sign." GTA is mostly made by Rockstar North in Scotland.
it wasn't picked up by irish tv because the idea was never pitched to rte, Graham Linehan has stated that numerous times
The decor was purposefully made to look dated. Even the cars were long out of production.
It was shown on Irish television not long after the original air date on Channel 4 in the U.K. but a large percentage of people in Ireland had Channel 4 and had already seen it.
It wasn’t made in Ireland (apart from all the exterior shots) because the writers were living in London and pitched it there. It wasn’t that it was passed on by Irish television.
Brilliant episode 👏
Loving the reactions guys can't wait for the rest. Also Wexford is just a small town/county in Ireland. It was just a dumb joke about the bright lights of wexford....not.
The only really buzzing Irish cities are Galway City and Dublin, and even they arent exactly a bright lights metropolis. Ireland doesnt really have a big city vibe in any of the cities. Its Ireland!
With the power of the Catholic church in the US, I don't think it's very surprising that it wasn't picked up. One of the all-time classic comedies.
Is it a type of nudity thing, Father? 🤣
Bishop Brennan having a family was inspired by real life antics of Bishop Eamon Casey, who had a child with an American woman. Was a huge scandal in Ireland at the time
THE MONEY WAS JUST "RESTING" IN MY ACCOUNT! I hope one day I never have to say that but it's nice to have it there in case.
The creator has said there wasn't going to be anymore seasons anyways. When he's made other shows they only have a short run duration.. For example , Black Books has 3 seasons. The IT Crowd has 4 seasons. In the Making of documentary he says that season 3 was always going to be the last.
6:15 - 3 week prerecord is a 3 week timer.
"Irish baldrick" pmsl spot on
Can't wait to see their faces when they realise graham norton is in it 😂
Never gets old 😂
I often at cinema early as watch up to 4 movies a day
The whole context about Bishop Brennan having a son in America was about a real Bishop here by the name of Bishop Casey, who at that time, was discovered to have had a son that he fathered in 1974 in Dublin and had been secretly supporting until the revelation came out.
There's no city lights in Wexford lol
There's some streetlights.
oh the youth of today not knowing the meaning of '3 week prerecord' on a VCR machine 😂
Respect & Peace ☘
I can't help thinking this episode was an homage to the show itself: perhaps the show didn't get a lot of traction until the church started protesting it...
Do these episodes look like they’re missing chunks to people? Like there’s been weird cuts and jokes removed?
Yes, they have been edited.
They have to be edited, or YT will strike them
So the thing about the married couple arguing. In Ireland pre 1990 when the Catholic Church had a stranglehold on the country, people acted happy in front of priests even if they hated each other. Divorce was ILLEGAL until 1995 approx
As a Catholic we don't hate everything only wars destruction and hunger. And as Irish man occupation of land. Peace coola boola
It’s funny because Ted said he missed the buzz of the Big City when in Ireland Wexford is very rural and not at all considered as a big city 😅
It's made in the 90s but everything feels older on purpose to give the feel that they are stuck in the dark ages a bit.
Wexford was a British police program
He was.... George Baker as Insp. Wexford. The Ruth Rendell Mysteries, it was a great series. It is also about 4 hour bus drive from where I currently live.
I been to the cinema a couple times before noon. Often best time as it quite.
How time flies
It was made in the 90s but not set in the 90s thats why it looks older
Interesting that you mentioned MASH. That was shown in the seventies in the UK. It is now being reshown on cable here ,but it has the original canned laughter track which wasn't the case when it was originally shown here. It really spoils it and is certainly not the better because of it.
I can understand why MASH was so beloved with audiences at the time, especially since the Vietnam war was still just about going on, but its so dated now. I remember it being on when i was a kid in the 1990s, and even then it seemed so dated. When you think of the fact that Fr Ted and Friends came out in the 90s, and here we are watching them thirty years later, they dont seem dated at all in my opinion, and they are as popular as ever. 1960s and 1970s shows were on tv a lot more in the 90s, but they were resigned to either morning time slots or very late night time slots. They seemed so dated even then, and you just watched them for the nostalgia and the fact our parents loved them.
"Careful Now!"
Down with this sort of thing!
MASH came out in 1972 but ran for 11 years, which is a long Korean war considering it was over in about one year.
Is there a reason so much of the episode is edited out? You miss a lot of little parts in this version. hard cuts. Is that your editing or the video you are watching?
Careful now down with this sort of thing 😂
Think 2002-2003 is when quality changed here
Wexford is tiny town in the south
Jesus Christ. Ed Sheran wasn't even born when this was made.
5:32 y'all ain't playing the right board games. expanding your horizons beyond Monopoly, Cle, Risk etc. will open up a whole new world
You watch something like Friends and in todays eyes it’s absolutely crap, really cringe. Something like FT stands the test of time because it’s quality.
Ye should try the board game HeroQuest. It's kinda like D&D and not competitive, but cooperative instead and it's a lot of fun.
And around £90 for the game.
The money was just resting in his account
parody of the RC reaction to the movie. The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian.
Deliberately made to look older🤩
Loving your introduction to the crazy world of Father Ted. There are alot of great episodes to come, season 3 episode 3 is my favourite. PS, if you get the chance take a trip to Ireland for TedFest
