This course provides a unique opportunity for students to meet with and learn from front-line experiences in community-based peace-building and restorative justice in Colombia, South America. The course focuses on community organizing and inter-cultural dialogue between Indigenous, Afro-Colombian, and former guerrilla mercenaries who have laid down their weapons and are working at reconciliation with victims. The course provides in-depth experiential learning on Colombian history, armed conflict resolution in theory and in practice, transitional justice, and methods in peace-building.
The course takes place in Cali, Colombia in collaboration with the Research Group on Social Movements, Intercultural Dialogue and Peace-building in the Institute for Intercultural Studies at the Universidad de Javeriana-Cali. The Universidad Javeriana Cali is one of the leading universities in the country working on peace building and restorative justice. The course is divided between time in the urban center of Cali, the third largest city in Colombia, where we will spend most of our days meeting with human rights defenders, non-governmental organizations, social movements, land defenders, government officials, and other members of civil (and uncivilized) society and their work towards peace and justice in Cali. A significant portion of the time will also be spent in rural communities with peace-builders, Indigenous resistance movements, Afro-descendent communities, and former guerrilla combatants.
Please note: There are only 10 spots available for this program; we therefore encourage students to submit their application as soon as possible.
