I talk like this a lot. My adhd kicks in and I have to say the thing now, but then I start talking and realize my thoughts are all still jumbled so I take a quick moment to make 'catch' and roughly group them all, and then just word vomit the rest before I forget😂
I knew you were gonna use Jongho as the example of normal/easy to understand because he speaks so clearly and is the easiest for me to understand without looking at the cc 😂
Is so funny to see how much his personality is imprinted in everything he does. He is very unique and his consistency with showing that in either his speach or his writing is amazing. Thank you so much, loved this video.
i really expected watch that clip where Wooyoung and San exposed Hong by saying that the words that captain use the more are "AISHH" "AUSH" "ASHH" lmao
Thank you for doing these for Ateez! Such an interesting analysis, I'm super excited about seeing the other members' analysis too, especially the part about the intonations. Personally I find Hongjoong's handwritting the easiest to read amongst the members, and his way of writing sentences is also easy for me to understand.
This was so fascinating, I'm not a korean learner but I've always wondered how ateez sound to other koreans so I'm super excited to see what you have to say about the rest of the members. I have a feeling the most standard speakers are yunho and jongho 😂 but we shall see! (Also interested to see if san has an accent as in if you can hear where he's from even when he uses standard/seoul(?) dialect)
I’m curious about Yunho too - even though he’s from the south he’s seemed to work hard to get rid of his dialect to the point that I think he’s said a couple of times he doesn’t remember how to use it
I hear San's dialect more in his word choices, not really in his intonation - for example, San often says "아이가?" ("a-i-ga") instead of "아닌가?" ("a-nin-ga") when he's asking a yes-or-no question. Otherwise, the only time his dialect intonation comes out is when he intentionally uses it. I've noticed this with all the Ateez members: they all have extremely clean intonation, considering only Jongho's from Seoul. There isn't a stand-out member whose dialect still influences their daily speech (like for example Wonwoo of SVT or Yoongi of BTS).
This was so interesting! I love ATEEZ so much and they're a big part of why I want to learn Korean. This analysis is so interesting, because even though I don't really understand Korean, I did pick up that Hongjoong slurs his words a lot just from listening to them all speaking so often. It's very interesting to listen to, haha!
From my observation, Jongho would be the most normal ATEEZ member regarding speech/pronunciation. That's it. That's where the normal ends. Back to Hongjoong. It seems to me that even in his normal speech the rapper side never sleeps.
I actually wonder what will happen with block b next year. Seeing that they want to come back, kq has the rights to the group but for the seasons they practiced at koz
Cool! One of my favorite Korean teachers covering my favorite kpop group :) This makes me feel sooo validated, I've always had a bit of a hard time understanding ateez members korean because they all have very unique ways of speaking. Hongjoong is the reason I've learned so many filler words lol I'll never be able to forget 약간 because he uses it ALL the time, even in interviews. I personally think Yunho speaks the most clearly. Seonghwa, San, and Jongho (as much as all of them claim to dislike 애교) speak "cutely" often with the sort of shorter-tongue-sound which I find a bit hard (but their regular speaking voices are quite clear), Yeosang has a bit of a lisp, Mingi mumbles sometimes, and wooyoung can speak really quickly lol. Also, I think one of the reasons they're not very good at the shouting in silence game is because their mouth shapes are actually not very similar because they pronounce words somewhat differently
So excited for the rest of this series!! Hongjoong for me is borderline impossible to understand- he is SO slurry with his words and overall I do not use him for listening practice 😅 He is one of my ults and I loved this analysis on his speaking ♥️
This was the most useful Korean language learning video (and an incredible way to learn more about my beloved ATEEZ~) I’ve probably ever watched. And we get one of these amazing analyses for each member of ATEEZ?! That’s an instant subscribe from me!
Hongjoong is truly an incredible person. He can confidently rap fast while dancing, but I don't hear his voice cracking or stuttering. His fluidity, expressions, and his confidence he is the embodiment of magnificence. idealism and beauty.❤️🔥❤️🔥 🇪🇬❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥🏴☠️
So i wonder if he uses filler words a lot because he is using that time to think of his message and the specific next word he wants to say. Personally i have a habit of elonating the length of a word to give me time to consider the next words I use. I feel like bc he's the captain during meaningful moments he prefers to be careful about his message. vs goofy times he speaks faster/with less filler words. This was such an interesting video that made me think of my style of speech. Im looking forward to the next ones. Especially Yunho!
Totally! I actually don't remember where but pretty sure Hongjoong did say bf it was bc of that! He is careful wanting to convey what he wants to say in a way he is not misunderstood and clear but also very genuine
Hongjoong said that he would sometimes talk in circles/beat around the bush just to get to the main point so people won’t misunderstand his messages. 😅
i'm not actively studying korean but i have picked up phrases here and there just through kdrama and listening and watching ateez variety shows. hongjoong does a lot of lives as well as speak a lot more in videos so i've gotten used to the way he speaks. the explanation on his filler words was interesting because basically those bits are the ones i catch the most, probably because he says it so repetitively! thank you for this analysis! look forward to the rest of the series for ateez!
Omg, I studied Korean and it was so fun to watch videos of Hongjoong speaking, I would show them to my teacher and he would say, oh? He really sounds like a rapper and I type, yes it is 😭🤣
Thank you for doing an ATEEZ series! I can’t wait for each installment. I’ve always described Hongjoong’s speech as skittering across consonants, but this video really gets down to the root of what makes Hongjoong’s speech sound the way it does. Part of why I love ATEEZ is their uniqueness, and that trickles down even into their speech. At least half the group tends to be easy to understand, but I’ve definitely found Hongjoong and Wooyoung to be most difficult. I can only really count on understanding 사실 when Hongjoong speaks. Sometimes his speech is clear to me, sometimes it’s not. 😅 But funny enough, very clear handwriting! 😂 Your video makes me want to now pay attention to how often I’ve understood him more, not necessarily due to intense focus on his speech over an extended session of hearing him, but more because he’s hosting or addressing ATINY via livestreams versus the relaxed way his speaks to the other members.
And Mingi! I always thought too it's bc those three are from Seoul so their accent is more casual cool slurred kinda way! Very hip like they would say? xp
Ah although Jongho is also from Seoul! I wonder why it's different, I guess it's personality based but also maybe his parents or the place he lived, or very probably too bc he is the main vocal plus was a trainee since very young in comparison to the other members and he learned to speak on a more standard and formal way🤔
@@vanessarl8 Haha, you bring up very interesting points. I still haven’t fully figured out where I stand on how much I can understand Mingi, but I would place him on the more difficult end, as well. He’s certainly not as clear as Jongho, apart from having a favorite word that’s always easy to hear like Hongjoong does. 🤣 I’m definitely going to focus on Mingi’s speech a little more to see what I notice.
i can't wait to see the one on Wooyoung. i'm not a korean speaker, i know only a handful of vocabulary, but i always like the way Wooyoung talks. it seems unique, i'll be interested to see if i'm right.
Everything about Hongjoong is smooth and beautiful, I can wholeheartedly listen to him talk though I don't understand Korean. He's so special and perfect ❤❤❤
This is very insightful! I'm a beginner (upper beginner?) learner that often practice by translating Yeosang Lives, Yeosang also uses a LOT of filler words, now I see that I wasn't completely wrong while I skimmed through them to find the meaning of what he was trying to express
Ah, I'm looking forward to San and Seonghwa. They use their local dialect on occasion and it's awesome.😂 I almost feel sorry for our translatiny on pop lives now knowing Hongjoong's speaking style. He talks A LOT in lives. 10:32 when he talks in the excited manner sometimes it sounds to me like he's complaining or pouting.😅
Oh this breakdown of HongJoong's usual speech reminds me that that's very much how RM from BTS also speaks (especially when he has a lot on his mind, is excited or like a lot to overwhelming amount of stress) you can notice what I mean if you watch videos from BTS's early years . My man didn't speak , he always rapped whenever he opened his mouth, whatever the format of content is, interviews , solo live talks etc .
This video and your explanation is so so so interesting! I always notice when people have certain speaking ticks in English so it’s really cool to learn about the little details of how Ateez speaks and writes even though I don’t understand Korean or nuances in people speaking it. It’s very obvious from your explanations that you did a lot of research and that you’re very passionate about these language details, which makes this video even more enjoyable to watch 🙂↕️ thank you for deciding to make Ateez the subject of your videos 🙏 I’m very grateful that you chose them and we international atiny can understand them more through their language
i am very curious to see mingi’s in this series because .. maybe it’s his slow speech or deep voice, but in both korean and english he sounds so (endearingly) derpy! like his thoughts are lagging 😂.

what i love abt him is his voice and words are more clear when hes rapping but when hes speaking hes slurring it a lot which is actually cute i love challenging myself by trying to dissect what hes saying 😆
You just smashed all content creators into the ground by just pronouncing their names right in the beginning and educating yourself on the group. In the very beginning of the video, you managed to establish trust with me (viewer, student) and get my attention. You're an amazing teacher! Thank you so much!
That's so interesting honestly. It makes sense and does seem to really match his personality. As a korean learner, it's my goal to be able to understand wooyo on a rant one day. I'm guessing you've seen his videos by now and... yeah he speaks hyper speed sometimes and my brain sounds like static
I love love love this type of analysis, as its something I always wonder as a Korean learner! And as an ATEEZ fan, I really appreciate the deep dive, so thank you!! Can't wait to see the rest of the videos!
So glad I found you. I am currently learning Korean, at a very slow pace due to work and family obligations but I’m definitely going to check out your videos on learning the language. I’m also a huge ATEEZ fan.
loved the video!! As a non-korean speaker who barely understands a word or two, i noticed that hongjoong does use a lot of filler and is sometimes hard to understand - like, i can get a word or two out of most korean speakers (esp in tv shows) but it's hard w hongjoong. his english pronounciation is also more unique than other korean speakers (from what i've noticed). do you think there's some influence of his province dialect in the way he speaks in terms of the intonation like you mentioned? I think his way of speaking makes his rap SO much more interesting and vice versa, maybe his rapping style slowly seeped into his speaking? I also think that what you described is to some extent his "broadcast voice" which makes it even more interesting and fun to listen to. super excited to check out your other content and all upcoming ateez videos.
Thank you for breaking this down: I know very little Korean, but I could tell that he sounded different from other native speakers and now I know why. I'm glad you explained in a non biased, non criticizing way. I wonder if him not taking as many breaths has to do with being a rapper at least in part because of course not all Korean rappers speak without taking breaths like he does.
I don't think (personally) it's related to him being a rapper, but I think it's just his style of speaking. He seems to have a lot to say and doesn't want to waste time with unimportant things like breathing :P
This was absolutely fun, this is my first ever video of your channel and I found you from the ateez server, thank you for sharing! I can’t wait for the other members I’m so excited! Also, I’m currently learning Korean so this feels more exciting and helpful😆
How fun and interesting thank you!! This is funny bc coincidentally a few days an Atiny was saying how he takes like a long and complex route of words to tell one thing and you lose track of what was the conversation about and being hard to convey the overall message and we were all agreeing xD For me also when sometimes I'm in a rush or whatever it can be a little frustrating but funny like thinking omg why so many words and slow, what are you trying to say😂 And he is aware of it! He said bf "Talking in circles is my specialty, but I think you'll understand me" xD I also really like his slurred dragging words way of speaking, it sounds very casual and cool! Sometimes cute too, that might be his voice+accent bc in all languages it's the same, everyone will tell you is super cute!! >< And back to dragging his words I think he is just like that but a lot of times also must be bc he is tired or/and sleepy😭 Or he shows it more! He is an open book lol, it's like he can't hide much when he is tired whatever and it shows in his mood, way of speaking or body language!
Hi, i am an Atiny. I am so excited for this series! As a Korean learner this was a good analysis and very informative. I can't wait to hear what you say about the other members :)
when I was first getting to know Ateez (now my ult group) I was genuinely convinced that Hongjoong has an alcohol problem by the way how MUCH he slurred his words! I was like???? Dude, that's just unprofessional to go live THIS hammered! ahaha. I've later found out that it's mostly bc of his constant and sever sleep deprivation. That man survives on naps and it shows! xD
17:31 I met ateez at a fansign, wrote Hongjoong a letter and my fansign questions in hangul. He said "woah! You wrote this?! Your handwriting is much better than mine" 😂 so hearing his handwriting is considered a bit all over the place makes sense now why he reacted so shocked
I love hearing him talk, I don't hear often this way of speaking and as an atiny I feel like it fits his style. 😆 I find it super interesting when he speaks English too, I've noticed he doesn't pronounce or emphasises much his vowels just like in Korean, though his intonation gets more 'plain', just like a regular Korean who has his level of English. This video was super interesting, can't wait to see your analysis of the other members!

As a Korean learner, Jongho is sooo satisfying to listen to. Even when he's excited or pouting, he pronounces his words with such precision 🤩
Same! And I also remember hearing the members and ktinys praising his handwriting and being the easiest to understand!
So ready to hear mingi’s voice breakdown lol
I saw Hongjoong and clicked so fast ❤️
Same
Sameeee 😂
am i dreaming? my favourite korean teacher covering my favourite group? i literally couldn't be happier rn~
omg i never knew a speech analysis on ateez could be so fun??? i loved this video sm
The way you said 우리 에이티니 is exactly how he says it!❤
Haha really? That's great!
Fr tho
1:48 "kq manages several other groups" and it's just Xikers 😂
Please don't judge me I used Wikipedia for that :-P
Hongjoong really doesn't breath, he just raps even when talking 💯
This was the most useful Korean language learning video (and an incredible way to learn more about my beloved ATEEZ~) I’ve probably ever watched. And we get one of these amazing analyses for each member of ATEEZ?! That’s an instant subscribe from me!
Guys the dude (Hongjoong) is the guy who I screamed out my life (and later lost my vioce when its hard to lose my vioce) out for at an ATEEZ concert.
Hongjoong is truly an incredible person. He can confidently rap fast while dancing, but I don't hear his voice cracking or stuttering. His fluidity, expressions, and his confidence he is the embodiment of magnificence. idealism and beauty.❤️🔥❤️🔥
🇪🇬❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥🏴☠️
I approve listening to wake up an unspecified number of times, top tier ateez bside
So happy to see that you are analyzing ATEEZ’s speech patterns. Looking forward to the upcoming episodes.
우와 영상 너무 재미나게 봤어요 ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ 홍중이의 한국어 분석이라니 생각도 못했던 주제라서 새롭기도 하고 공감되는 부분도 있네요 ㅋㅋㅋ쿠ㅜ
i'm not actively studying korean but i have picked up phrases here and there just through kdrama and listening and watching ateez variety shows. hongjoong does a lot of lives as well as speak a lot more in videos so i've gotten used to the way he speaks. the explanation on his filler words was interesting because basically those bits are the ones i catch the most, probably because he says it so repetitively! thank you for this analysis! look forward to the rest of the series for ateez!
Your video makes me want to now pay attention to how often I’ve understood him more, not necessarily due to intense focus on his speech over an extended session of hearing him, but more because he’s hosting or addressing ATINY via livestreams versus the relaxed way his speaks to the other members.
This was a really good analysis of hongjoongs unique personality. Thank you❤
i can't wait to see the one on Wooyoung. i'm not a korean speaker, i know only a handful of vocabulary, but i always like the way Wooyoung talks. it seems unique, i'll be interested to see if i'm right.
Our certified yapper #1
This is so interesting. Thank you for analyzing Hongjoong's speech/handwriting.
I guess that's why Hogjoong is rapper, and Jongho is main vocalist/ballader. XD
Hongjoong is a top rapper who does his crazy speed rap in one breath, so understandable 😅
oh my god, thank you so much for analysing ateez! looking forward to other members
They use their local dialect on occasion and it's awesome.😂
I almost feel sorry for our translatiny on pop lives now knowing Hongjoong's speaking style.
It’s very obvious from your explanations that you did a lot of research and that you’re very passionate about these language details, which makes this video even more enjoyable to watch 🙂↕️ thank you for deciding to make Ateez the subject of your videos 🙏 I’m very grateful that you chose them and we international atiny can understand them more through their language
i am very curious to see mingi’s in this series because .. maybe it’s his slow speech or deep voice, but in both korean and english he sounds so (endearingly) derpy! like his thoughts are lagging 😂.
thank you so much billy 😭i was the one in the ateez discord begging for this video ahaha
I see HONGJOONG I watch and like ❤️ No 1 like Kim Hongjoong
my favorite korean teacher analyzing my favorite group is too much fun, i cant wait until more get posted!!! im looking forward to hear about seonghwa & san’s satoori, esp seonghwa whos of which seems to come out mainly when excited or acting tough haha
하나의 영상으로 구독하게 된 거는 처음인 거 같은데 에이티즈때문에 보게됐지만 말하는 방식과 손글씨를 분석하는게 정말 재밌어요! 한국어 수업시간에 나혼자 영어수업인 느낌이긴했는데 나머지 멤버들 분석도 기대하고 있을게요!❤❤
+한국어 공부를 영어로 보니까 영어공부에 되게 도움이 많이 되네요!
Talking about his filler words - are you saying this man is Valley Girl??? I love him so much
Loved this so much, thank-you. Hope there will be some Seonghwa satoori on the next episode 😊
this is so interesting omg!! I don't know much korean at all, but I always love listening to the way Hongjoong talks lol. I can't wait for you to get to the other members!
You pointing out all the filler words Hongjoong uses is hilarious lol, I may not know Korean but I remember what he says (even if I don't know the exact meaning) and I'm sitting here like "damn... he does say that a lot" LOL
Thank you for doing these for ATEEZ! Looking forward to your analysis of other members' speech patterns
Dude i was watching an ateez video and as hongjoong came on this notif popped up bro omg
i’m not learning korean and i don’t know anything about ateez but i clicked on accident and you made this video really interesting so i just ended up sticking around for the while thing lol
what i love abt him is his voice and words are more clear when hes rapping but when hes speaking hes slurring it a lot which is actually cute i love challenging myself by trying to dissect what hes saying 😆
I saw Hongjoong and clicked on the video without thinking. ❤️🔥🏴☠️❤️🔥🇪🇬
I love love love this type of analysis, as its something I always wonder as a Korean learner! And as an ATEEZ fan, I really appreciate the deep dive, so thank you!! Can't wait to see the rest of the videos!
12:31 HAHAHA out of topic😂😂
Yas dude, we are love hongruella❤❤
Never thought I’ll get one of my fav teacher talk about my fav musicians 🔥🤭
Deep dive in the video captaion! Deep dive is actually a new song of theirs
I didn't notice these before, thanks for this video!
One of my favourite korean content /teacher making content about my favourite idol group ATEEZ ❤️
So excited for this series. Thank you Billy!
If it fits into your schedule, the Sunday livestream classes are great, and also a lot of fun.
How fun and interesting thank you!!
This is funny bc coincidentally a few days an Atiny was saying how he takes like a long and complex route of words to tell one thing and you lose track of what was the conversation about and being hard to convey the overall message and we were all agreeing xD
For me also when sometimes I'm in a rush or whatever it can be a little frustrating but funny like thinking omg why so many words and slow, what are you trying to say😂
And he is aware of it! He said bf "Talking in circles is my specialty, but I think you'll understand me" xD
I also really like his slurred dragging words way of speaking, it sounds very casual and cool! Sometimes cute too, that might be his voice+accent bc in all languages it's the same, everyone will tell you is super cute!! ><
And back to dragging his words I think he is just like that but a lot of times also must be bc he is tired or/and sleepy😭 Or he shows it more! He is an open book lol, it's like he can't hide much when he is tired whatever and it shows in his mood, way of speaking or body language!
I am like him so much 😂 its frustrating because i forget what i am even saying
Guys i love ateez 😭 thanks for analyzing them!
That man survives on naps and it shows! xD
ahhhhhh thank you for analyzing them, theyre amazing
17:31 I met ateez at a fansign, wrote Hongjoong a letter and my fansign questions in hangul. He said "woah! You wrote this?! Your handwriting is much better than mine" 😂 so hearing his handwriting is considered a bit all over the place makes sense now why he reacted so shocked
this analysis is so fun!! i'm rlly looking forward to your videos on the other members too!!
I love hearing him talk, I don't hear often this way of speaking and as an atiny I feel like it fits his style. 😆
I find it super interesting when he speaks English too, I've noticed he doesn't pronounce or emphasises much his vowels just like in Korean, though his intonation gets more 'plain', just like a regular Korean who has his level of English.
This video was super interesting, can't wait to see your analysis of the other members!
