I met Kina in Okinawa City in late 1988. He invited a friend of mine and me to a party celebrating the opening of a coffee shop called Gaia (being opened by a family member). He didn't even know us before the invite. A genuinely nice guy.
Ry Cooder has been around the world ..his music is powerful and with meaning. .his ability with the slider on guitar is magnificient..and entertaining in performance..many songs are very rewarding with the sound of instrument replayed with the slider on cue..thank you
Never went to Okinawa - but the japanese feeling still in Tokyo for a few years... I still wish we went to southern Japan - but - Sapporo was a great stay...
Sanshin (It means 3 strings), its a instrument played in Okinawa. In the biger island of Japan, they play shamisen. Its basicly the same, the difference is that they are made frome different things I think.
Is there a live version of this with the girl singing? Like this one th-cam.com/video/8Mc8GH7hREQ/w-d-xo.html I found this in the tape player of my first car, back in 2015, it's a 1987 Volvo 740 that had not been driven since 1993. The singer in that version is Tomoko Kina. On the tape was one of those Swedish "world music programs", and the version I linked was on that, the program recorded in 1992 (as the DJ said on the tape)

I actually cried listen to this fantastic song.
I was living in Nara in the first half of May 1994, and visited Todaiji twice. I would've dearly loved to see this concert. 💖
I used to live in Mie Prefecture, Nara was a short bus ride away. I sure do miss Japan. I love that place - warts and all.
Beautiful message about life. Cry. Smile. Flowers will always bloom.
Goosebumps!
すごくいい歌!❤
