They took me through the Monologue, the Miniligue, the Minibrute 2s...But this series about the Deepmind is the most useful and well done of all. It's been two days I'm studying from your videos and never even had to open the manual. You are taking the time to go through every single feature and position and this is pure gold.
Seriously guys, this guy is so down to earth and you can see how passionate he is about the sounds: he is just shimmering like a child when he finds something interesting even if he has made hundrends of tutorials. The latter ones in particular are worth checking out in my opinion - the ones where I'm building a drum machine and the 'generative' patch. I think they really show off how flexible this synth is.
@@OscillatorSink You're welcome... it seems like we have close tastes in machines. I like to find things that are huge bang for buck because I've not got an unlimited budget for synth stuff. I have the monologue paired up to the zoom ms70cdr. I have a beatstep pro. Now I have just ordered my deepmind 12D. (already got a great midi keyboard to play it with.) I want to try and use the deepmind to recreate M83 style pads. There's a TH-cam video with a guy using a Rev2 2 to recreate some of M83's stuff. The DM series is decent when using the factory patches but really shines once you start adjusting all those filters, envelopes and such, as proven with your DM videos, cheers!
I've got so much more out of your tutorials than anywhere else, even the manual doesn't come close to how you show the Deepmind's possibilities. I've had my Deepmind 12 for about 6 weeks or so now, and since watching your videos, I have finally managed to pull myself out of "how the hell do I drive this thing" mode. Thank you so much. I can't believe how old this Synth is now and it's still out of stock in most places. I had an issue with my DM12 a couple of months ago and I'm still waiting for Amazon to get stock. It says a lot about this instrument. Definitely a future classic and an amazing bargain.
It is great, but I have to say that my Korg Opsix has basically replaced it now. I know its digital, but it can do all the things I want the Deepmind to do, and a lot more. I even just posted a video showing how you can replicate a Juno style synth inside it!

@Interstellar Frequencies It's a personal preference anyway,me personally I never liked the thin sounding engine of the Minilogue even of the XD version too.
@@savanaviolenta I liked the XD but its too limited to be really fun. One LFO for instance. I just cant understand that. It cant be that expensive to put in but it makes such a difference. Another envelope wouldnt hurt either. Although it does have a step sequencer....

14:39 The Boost button seems to be useful for going between background instrument and lead instrument. If you want to fit into an already heavy mix, turning that boost off may help a little. Especially in a live set

You're awesome. Huge asset to the synth communitiy. I had the DM12 desktop when it first came out, but it was way too confusing for me at the time and I sold it after a month or two. Now, that I understand what is going on much more, I want one again.. Btw, don't apologize for the video length, it was perfect. I was actually kind of sad when it ended.

I am blown away by your sound design skills on ANY synth not just Deepmind.
Could you epxlain why Korg Opsix has taken over most of what you wanted your Deepmind to do?
I am unsure whether to buy the Opsix, I do own and like the Modwave already though.
Thank you. So the short version is: there is little architecturally that that Deepmind can do but the opsix can't (flexible triggering of the envelopes is the main exception), but the opsix can do SO MUCH more. Leaving aside a much wider range of synthesis techniques, when you start approaching it like a little modular environment it's extremely flexible. The Deepmind is more immediate and hands on for conventional subtractive duties - but I wasn't using like that most of the time and for my use case the opsix beats it in almost every way.
@@OscillatorSink Very kind of you to actually answer my question. I had to let my Novation Summit go and since then I just miss that direct control of parameters that for example a Deepmind seems to offer. I can do most of what it does in software but not with that hands-on control and joy. I guess I am still at a loss when I returned an epic hardware synth and went mostly software again, and I try to fill a gap... Thanks again.

I managed to create the patch on my DM12 the only difference is the octave setting is -1 to make the keys you pressed and mine sound the same. I think the synthesizer is appropriately named.

@@OscillatorSink amazing! thanks so much.. just curious have you ever tried to get any polychromatic/microtonal sounding patches out of the deepmind. I recently became aware of how rich and complex the layering of voices sound in polychromatic synthesizers, and while i'm currently physically away from my deepmind, I've been trying to imagine how I might use the voice numbers and possibly the note numbers as sources to modulate the tuning of individual oscillators in positive and negative directions. While it would certainly be more random and less controlled than an actual polychromatic synth, I feel confident this synth is capable of achieving similarly rich sounds. Here is a great example! anyway, thanks so much again.

I have not, it'd be a bit tricky to do in a controlled way, but you could, I think (for example) condense or expand scales across a number of keys, which would definitely be interesting. Use the note number as a modulation source for pitch of both oscillators. You can do similar things with the Microfreak.

My old PolySix had only one VCO but its different waveshapes gave a much greater variety of sounds than the Deepmind oscillators seem to offer. The old square wave sounded hollow and flute-like before applying VCF. The sawtooth wave sounded like strings immediately. Sinewave sounded different than the others immediately.
Why do the Behringer DM oscillators all sound like a buzzy sawtooth?
I suspect that the technical answer to this is some combination of the VCOs in the PolySix having a greater level of slew compared to the DM's DCOs which results in rounded edges on the waveform; this will reduce the buzzy upper harmonics and the fact that the VCF is probably not totally open, even when the control is full up. On that second point, it's been noted that the DM sounds brighter than a Juno with the filter fully open, but when you drop the VCF down to about 80 percent, it sounds much more similar.
I wouldn't say that the square wave sounds like a sawtooth on the Deepmind personally, but it does sound like a buzzy square. I'm guessing if you got a scope on it, you'd find that the corners of the wave were a bit pointy.

Thanks very much for these. I have just followed step by step your PAD and Ambient Pad and its very useful in helping me understand subtractive synthesis. I was trying to decide between the Deepmind 12D and the Minilogue XD, to compliment my KingKorg, and I think I made the correct decision to go with the Deepmind. I have also loaded a few of your custom sounds after doing a backup. Do you know if I can load yours through the Deepmind IOS app, or just through your program that did work very well. Not sure how to reload the backup in the unlikely event I might have to. Many thanks once again.

Question though: Sometimes when I edit and save a preset, or make my own form scratch, the volume varies quite a bit from the others. Is that a result of the FX configuration? Is there a global setting I can edit to boost the volume? Cheers!
So the first thing to note is that usually when sound designers are doing factory patches, they usually work to make all of the patches hit a similar perceived loudness (for example, on the Microfreak, official patches should all hit around the same perceived volume as the Init Patch). So the first thing is - don't worry about it too much and just tweak your master volume!
But there are two main areas where you will find that you can match the volume. The first is the master VCA slider, but honestly that's only going to adjust down in most cases as the factory patches are pretty hot volume wise. The other, as you hinted at, is in the FX chain - a lot of factory patches use the Enhancer or Compressor towards the end of the chain *with the chain set to insert mode* - that boosts the whole patch volume... But honestly I'm not a fan of working that way as I prefer my FX on send mode.
There is actually one other place that may well be making a big difference and that's in the VCA menu: by default, an Init patch has the VCA Velocity sensitivity set to max - I find that's too sensitive and tends to make most notes too quiet (for the way I play) - try setting that to half (64)and see if that affects the perceived loudness of your patch.

I think I show this in some other videos, but from an initialised patch: press the Edit button for the oscillator section, make sure the "P.Mod Src" is one of your LFOs, turn your mod wheel up to full then turn up the "Wheel>P. Mod" parameter until you hear the amount of wobble you're after. Hope that helps!
Hi! Is there a way to save your new creations but not overwrite the preset on the actual synth? I know it's possible on, say an Ipad. Cheers! Love your vids and this synth!
The synth comes with every preset filled, so no. Bank A is a "best of" bank though, so they are all duplicates of patches in the other banks, so there's no problem overwriting those patches.
Is the dm 12 necessary? I’m thinking of getting me one of these and not sure if I should get the dm6, 12 or rack.
I would say that if you have a good controller keyboard already, and you can afford it, I would go for the 12 rack - doubling the voices makes a big difference to a performance when you start looking at patches with unison involved. I went for the 6 because I wanted something more compact and didn't have a controller with full size keys (and because it was a bit cheat, honestly), but I can definitely see where the 12 would be beneficial.
Oscillator Sink do you ever experience noticeable voice stealing?
Occasionally, on some patches - especially in the case of using unison, but I find that I quickly adapt my playing techniques to work around it. If I was doing a lot of live playing perhaps I'd want the extra voices on the 12 though?
the 12D is the one to have, poly and mono Unison can easily use all those voices and I expect that it could be the version that sells the most now ( I bought one last week )

If you have a keyboard controller that you like, I would suggest that the 12D is, on balance, the best value in the series, and probably what I'd buy today if I wanted a Deepmind and didn't already own one.
How do you start with that fresh, untouched synth sound at the beginning? All my patch slots have an existing heavily modified patch on them.
Hold Prog and tap Compare to get an initialised patch.
is this synth recommend for deep ambient PADs and interesting Arps?
Yes. Those are probably the 2 things it does best.

How long,do you need to wait for the oscillators to warm up?
They are DCOs - they're pretty much ready to go straight away. The only time you should need to wait is when you run the full calibration routines (which will be rare).
i am wondering how easy you are making this look.......that menu must take a while to get to know.......Do you guys think that this might be too complex a unit for someone who is more a drummer, and likes using synths within ableton live to compose electronic pieces?...I've had plenty of synths and i am sick of using virtual......thanks for any advice fellow musicians!!! lets do it to it
The menus really aren't hard to navigate - in fact, if you have to have menus, it's one of the best arrangements I've come across. Each section of the synth has it's own menu button, so it's very much an extension of the main synth. Want to change how the LFO is behaving? Tap the button next to the Rate + Depth sliders. Tweak the filter response - that's the button underneath the cutoff and resonance sliders!
The Deepmind makes a great beginner's synth - you don't really *have* to use the menus at all, but it's also an incredibly deep synth that rewards you if you take the time to learn it, and learn more about synthesis on the way.

The track is "Marooned" from Pink Floyd, it's the backing track so you can listen to the synth sounds, I know they used a Kurzweil k2000 but I bet we can get similar sounds with the Deepmind! I am wondering if you could make a tutorial for this! Cheers from Italy!

Bank A is all duplicates from other banks, so you can safely overwrite anything there.
Please don't tell it took this man 36 minutes to make an ambient pad.
I am that man and given that I was explaining the patch and my thinking behind it as I went along, yes, yes I did. No one is forcing you to watch, but I hope you do and that you find something new and interesting in the process.
I would be happy to spend twice this time to get a pad like this! This is the best I've seen anywhere. Thanks for spending the effort to share this with us!

This keyboards interface is horrible.
I dunno, for the most part I find it very quick to move around for the features it provides. There are menus but the way you access them and interact with them is actually pretty well thought out (the Moog One works in almost exactly the same way and is usually praised for it, for example). The Mod Matrix is super quick to assign... The only bugbear I have is the FX section actually - that could be more streamlined, but even that's not terrible.
