DIY Rocket Stove. Make a Powerful and Efficient Wood Burning Camp Stove from Recycled Beer Cans.

  • In this video I am back in the shed making the third and final stove in this mini series on DIY wood burning camp stoves.
This episode shows the building of a powerful twin walled rocket stove. Using recycled materials, I build the inner chamber, feed port and chimney, then insert it into the outer section, packing the void with fireproof vermiculite.
On testing, the stove out-performs all the other stoves I have built - it produces a hot, powerful fire thanks to the chimney effect built in to the design and uses very little fuel to boil water and cook. You can adjust the burn by rotating the stove so that the feed port faces the wind for higher temperature, or point it away from the wind for less power. Although bulkier than the other two stoves in the series, it is still lightweight and highly portable.
I am absolutely thrilled with this stove - it will certainly get plenty of use, and all made from items that would otherwise get thrown away - a winner in my book!
I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

I have a stove in the making that doubles up as a charcoal kiln. It could also be used as a foundry by firing it with the charcoal it produces.

Enjoyed the video . Looks Stable and seems to work very well . I like the fact that it’s a realistic build with simple tools and not a fancy stove built with and in a £ 25000 workshop . 👍

Nice build, and good to see Maggie ! Consider adding a grate/woodrest in the bottom tube. Lets the air feed under the fire. The fire sets on top of the grate. You should get a cleaner burning and hotter flame. Thanks for the vid. P.s, Thats one serious can of beer !

And of course, the best part of this stove is doing all the "research" beforehand ("research" = emptying the original contents of the keg/cans 😉) Just be sure to wait a day or so before operating any power tools. Well done Simon. Really solid construction. The addition of the vermiculite is great idea as well, both from an efficiency and structural point of view. Thanks Simon. Love it! A top job Simon. I well remember Sapporo beer arriving in the UK in the late '80s (it was the 'in thing' in London rock clubs at the time) and always thought there must be something useful to be done with the empties. I think that given a larger sheet of material you could have gotten the pot stand to extend downwards and transfer some weight onto the stove top for extra stability when using larger pots. I'd be tempted to pop-rivet the two halves of the Adnams keg together, to prevent any accidental spillage of the vermiculite in transit. Best build yet for sure!

As you look for new ideas, think about doing a show on electronic navigation. “Simon does Tech in the woods”. Excellent video Simon. Thanks for sharing the knowledge. After this I had a look online for double walled rocket stoves and noticed that some had extra bits to hold longer lengths of wood. Thought to myself that another beer can left whole at one side to clamp over the opening, but cut past the halfway point all the way to the other end of the can would be a handy wee extra!? If that sloppy explanation makes sense!? 🤣🤷🏻‍♂️

I have two questions. How does the aluminium pot-holder fare with all that heat blazing up around it?
Secondly, which country produces that beer in steel cans?
I presume you will use this on your canoe trips, as having to feed it wood on a car camping trip would seem rather involved for cooking a full meal on.
Quite an ingenious design and a good excuse for a few beers. Did you tell your Missus that you had to suffer for your art? 😄
I would like to know how it holds up under frequent use, as I imagine aluminium and steel have different rates of expansion. Where the two metals meet, is where I would envisage any problems occurring .
    Interesting video, thanks for uploading.

The inside of metal cans are coated with zinc, this is to prevent aluminium poisoning. How many times is it feasible to use your burning can before you start releasing toxic aluminium fumes? Smackheads are aware of this and burn off their foil before smoking brown.

We used to use Vermiculite as packaging for any items or parts that were ever so slightly radioactive when I was in the Army at Wattisham Airfield. Never came across it before I was posted there. I’m starting to realise all your films are just camouflage for your drinking habit.

I like the looks of that Stove would be a little awkward Backpacking, but it could be doable. I`m guessing where you cut it in half it looked to fit tight enough to hold together on nit`s own so no Screws needed. Enjoyed it Simon

I was just thinking. If you could be bothered it might be useful to rivet some type of wood covered handle onto either side ( like you see on some small portable barbeques).

Vermiculite is still legal in uk, wow.
With all the contamînated problème we had in Canada, its not even legal to use it. If you already have some, it has to be tested and remove if its contaminated.

nice build. i'm thinking that rocket stove temperatures may very well melt the aluminium pot stand, no?

You can ever add a trangia burner inside, then your rocket stove will make the best windscreen. This plan "B" can be used if sticks are too moist to be burned from rain, snow, sleet, and ice.

very nice! great design. might put the feeder a bit angel down, say 30 degrees, to let the wood slide down easier as it burn. a bit bulky for the pack, gave me a very good idea for a light design i work on for some time now. cheers, and well dune!
