I’m Canadian. So interesting to hear how different school is in Japan. In Canada it’s literally so different. So fascinating. I wish I had the opportunity to live in Japan
How was growing up in Canada? I've only ever known the US education system. And I know that even education in the US can also vary state to state in terms of what is taught, like the different languages or sports etc.
Canadian grew up in Ontario. my understanding and experience is that most students take French as a second language around 4th grade until 8th grade. Or your child can do french first language and start school entirely in french with an english course. Depending on what area you live or how large of a school you go to the courses will vary for older student. My secondary school only had French and Spanish for languages but for Sports there was a lot of options.

Love to see this! I went to 9th grade in Tokyo, Japan. I went to the American School In Japan. Some of the customs you guys discussed were similar for us, even though it was an “American” school- it was still quite Japanese. 😊
I'm half Japanese and I had a great school life. I had a few friends and I was the go to classmate for English studies students. I miss those days of highschool
For Indo-European languages such as English, German, and French, the issue of identity is not so much of a problem. Japanese, however, is fundamentally different from English in its grammar, structure, and ideology. When you speak Japanese and when you speak English, don't you feel as if you are two completely different people?
It is a completely different way of forming sentences and communicating, but I still feel like the same person, just with a more limited form of expressing myself (until my Japanese gets better at least!)
In Japanese, the subject is subordinate to the verb in the nominative case. This subject is shared by the listener. For this reason, Japanese philosophers argue that Japanese people are intersubjective. Once your child reaches adulthood, I recommend that they receive Western education in English.
I can tell you for certain, that I experienced an identity crisis coming from one European country and living in another, two totally different cultures alltogether, even though they are mostly what people consider "white"!!! I also had a complete culture shock when I went to Canada, also a "western" country. 😂😅
I think this TH-cam is very wonderful. I have been studying English every day for 30 years because I want to be able to speak with people from all over the world. I think that education at schools, universities, cram schools, etc. is not as good as it is overseas.
