    This is a bad look but glad Mark posted this match and took the risk of being called out. The USTA ref was being extra careful not to make an impact on the match. He gave
    his warning and IMO Mark pushed it. If the ref was on a power trip he could have done more. Now Matt is not much of a victim here. He was also loud or louder than Mark
    on his com ons. The real victims is how 4.5 and up tennis looks. This is not how most matches go but more than a few do sound like this. I have seen it even in 3.5 with
    flying rackets landing on my court from the next. 5 other courts were in the range and many of us have been next to one of these matches. It's just not respectful. I hope we
    all can learn from this match. Thanks for posting! Good luck.

      Looking back it at, yeah I was the @$$hole. It did seem like it was a bit louder (and much more sarcastic) than my other comments.
      NGL, I was the bad guy here.

      @@MarkSansait not a bad guy at all. Going in with new rackets and maybe self imposed pressure is a tall order. Facing some strong players and trying is a success. Great content.

      Maybe a little melodramatic ... "the real victims" ... this was a very close and competitive match in a tournament that counted for something. The hush hush country club sensibilities of tennis is partially what is holding back attracting younger people to the game. That "said", your point well taken in that loud yells can be disruptive to competitors on other courts, not ideal. I tell you this, I'd rather have an occassional yell here and there than listen to players who grunt excessively on every shot. THAT is OK by the refs for some reason.

    • @ProjectsandReviewsZone
      @ProjectsandReviewsZone 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@georgebasham2279 Lets face it younger people are too busy doing TickTock videos that doesn't involve running. School programs cutting gym is what is killing sports lol.
      I played on public courts in the Bronx and had a deejay set up a sound system for a birthday party next to the courts. We could not even hear the balls hit the rackets lol.
      So I don't play too much in country clubs but when I do pay for indoor tennis I expect a level of courtesy. TennisHead has a video where the jr girl on the next court is
      grunting worst than any pro match I have ever seen. Watch how the players have to play between her points to try and not get caught out hitting when she is grunting and yelling.
      It was way over the top to the point of being a practical joke.

    One of my favorite parts of your game is your one handed backhand. So many times I was like, here it comes! But then just a slice. Trust in that backhand and you win. Good luck in the next match!

  • @geausportequipment

    Since a lot of other people aren't saying it, I will - Matt's a really good player. On top of that, if I could custom build a player to beat Mark he would be awfully close to Matt. Consistent, waits for the right shot, and can close the point when the door opens. Anticipates the ball and retrieves well. Mark had a bad day for sure but gotta give Matt some credit.

  • @lebeautennis
    @lebeautennis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I know you will pick this match apart yourself when watching it back so I know you will come back even stronger.I agree with the comments on here, you have to hit over your backhand more bro. I can see that your tactic was to contain with the slice and wait for a ball to attack but as you know you had lots of attackable balls but decided instead to push the ball back again. I would rather see you go for your shots more than push your shots and lose, and I know you do to. I admire anyone who posts their matches. It's brave and thats why we respect you Mark. It's all about the process.I would really love to see you attack those short balls in your next match. Lets Go. :)

    Good of you to upload this, man. I know that's a tough loss and it looked like you both had nerves. I doubt you slice that much normally and footwork is usually better. The guy you played is good but you would beat him 8/10 times in normal conditions, IMO.
    Was this to get into the NTRP nationals in Surprise? If its any consolation, I played in the 4.5 ntrp nationals the first year and it was not as good as I thought it would be. Fast 4 format just kills the fun and for some reason, matches were way behind schedule.

    I was telling my friends the other day I was as invested in this match as I was in any sporting event I have watched in recent memory...sounds ridiculous but true. And that is solely due to Mark's honesty and passion for his tennis journey, not to mention the balls it takes to "put yourself out there" like this. In 2019 I was in a similar situation returning to serious competition after being out of the game and could relate to every bit of tension I saw him feeling (and man could you see it!). Nothing like competition! Keep your head up and keep grinding man you have gained a fan here... (and for what it is worth, I love no-ad scoring...keeps things moving and the intensity of those deuce points is unmatched!)

    I guess, he was more concerned about the negatively-charged tone than the decibel.

      I would say it's a combination of decibel and length of phrase. Short "come ons" are ok no matter how loud, but longer loud sentences definitely interfere with the concentration of the players on the other courts. I'm siding with the ref here.

    Mark, very nice tennis. If I can say one thing, training to go around your backhand and hitting forehand instead will bring your game to another level. At least half of the backhands you hit you could have easily hit forehands instead and that will put a lot of pressure on your opponent. You are a very quick guy, I am sure you will feel fine doing it.

    A third set tiebreaker, great match! Matt is a heck of a player, interesting serve, low ball toss with a quick and explosive slightly side-armed swing that imparts a wicked slice on the ball that appears to have a lot of pace also. As good as Matt is, and he sure is, I think if Mark is playing his A game due to his tenacious, competitive nature he beats Matt at least half the time. Not sure how beneficial that double pump is on Mark's serve, but is probably an ingrained service ritual at this point.

Not with slice, but with the heavy forehand topspin that you got. Mark, it is obvious you were nervous. Giving up your bread and butter driving backhands to slice so much throughout the match, that is surprising to see. However, your slices were effective keeping Matt at bay, so it was not bad. I think the volleys and overheads were where your nervousness showed. Either way, you still played a very competitive match, it was a tough loss. I agree with some other commenters, it is hard to get into a rhythm in a Fast 4 format. One break makes all the difference in each set. And before the nerve settles down the match is basically over.

    I'm not in your head, but it seemed to me you were tentative and nervous. If so, I can identify. I don't think Matt could do anything to hurt you from the baseline. As long as you kept decent pace or good depth, it was just a matter of shot tolerance. When you hit a shortish floating ball, he was quick to hit a good approach and put you under a lot of pressure. He did have a pretty good putaway volley and a decent overhead.
    I do agree with other couch-coaches here that you seemed to pass up opportunities to hit your topspin backhand to force him out of position, but I do realize he hit a lot of floaty, high-bouncing balls, so the slice is good in those situations. He kind of lulled you into kind of a pushers game for a good portion of the match The only other thing I saw was you seemed to really just be guiding a lot of your volleys. They either ended up right back to Matt or so weak he ran them down.
    All that being said, I could still tell you were fighting hard, running balls down, especially. Perhaps a longer match would have favored you a bit, in my opinion... I assume this was a single elimination tournament??

    The system of sets with 4 instead of 6 winning games is hard to watch. Plus the tiebreak only to 5?
    In my very early years I played competitive table tennis where we still played sets to 21 with 5 serves each. A few years later it was transformed to the still running sets to 11 with 2 serves. I really don't like to play or to watch that format. The problem is, the less time you have to find your rhythym the less offensive you will play.
    In my eyes Mark lost that match by some decision makings and some bad executed shots when he had opportunities to finish. I mean for his standards.

    • @MarkSansait
      @MarkSansait  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely it played a part, but we both played in this format so he was the better player!

    I can't stand those courts next to each other without any fence or something like that. I really don't see the point. And I only see those in the US, never seen that on any other place.
    It's so easy to disturb other matches with a tennis ball or running after a wide angle shot...
    Nice match, btw.

    You can't be a good player if you slice the BH 99%. The other guy figured out near the end, attacked your BH and charged to the net. Once in while you hit a good one handed BH so I think you should be confident using it more.

    Why do you shout “second” before your second serves? I mean why would you? Your opponent knows it’s a second he doesn’t need you to remind him right? In Europe your attitude on court wouldn’t be tolerated.

    You should have more faith in your one handed backhand how is it going to get any better when you only use it in practice with ian and not during game. Dont wait for the perfect opportunity to use it, make the opportunity to use it.

    This fast 4 format is horrible. Completely ruins the match flow and takes away fitness as competitive advantage. Also the umpire had no reason to intervene on the first yell, regardless of how Mark trolled him afterwards. Better luck next time, nervous finish, totally understandable.

Do you know what that feeling is like when the official interrupts your flow and when literally all other courts beside are as loud as you were for 3 seconds? Get off your high horse you internet troll and go out and post a national qualifier match of your own, then we’ll talk.
