Not surprised this is from a TV show and not an actual war song. It seems to speak recklessly and ideally of the difficulties of war. If there were planes and cannon, a sensible soldier would conserve strength and fight another day, or call for a more appropriate unit than rush forward to die. In a real war, the willingness to sacrifice would only get you there half way. No soldiers who had seen war would write such lyrics. Compare this to the actual "Dadao March" the you see what I mean. The "Dadao March" is equally heroic and determined, but not reckless and unrealistic.
Because unlike in Chinese, there’s no single unified word in English to differentiate between a single edged blade from a double edged blade. In English a long double edged blade is a sword, but a single edged blade has many names, such as backsword, sabres, messers, cutlass (which is Arabic I think) etc. The closest thing to a Da Dao in western culture is probably the cutlass, but even that is unsatisfactory since the Da Dao and the cutlass are two very instruments.
@@VictorianChinese1860 yeah that’s a lazy mistranslation bec of the lack of a better word for a single edge blade. Part of the problem is that English is very much a bastardized language with huge amount of loan words from other languages and the mythos of holding the sword as symbol of kingly and chivalric esteem. Single edged blades were often regarded in the west as utilitarian, farming tools even, just as the bow and arrows were considered cowardly (battle of Agincourt and the French habit of cutting off captured English bowmen’s index and middle fingers), whereas in the east, virtue lies in the person and not in the tools he uses.
