Did my first notan last night in prep for a painting. Hadn't heard the word until you mentioned them, only thumbnails, which I've done. Reducing everything to only black or white (I used B&W acrylics and a brush) was very challenging! Sort of like doing a woodblock print. But this is exactly what I need to improve my skills of simplifying instead of getting so caught up in all the details. I could go back and forth correcting with the paint, and cover more area easily, so this works best for me. Then I added a mid-grey to the mix, and found that very helpful to identify values too. Dear madam, thank you for sharing with us your knowledge of Notan. One question is not clear to me, and I have asked it on various sites, but so far I have not received a specific answer. Can you help me ... is there any rule in notan studies that determines the relationship between dark and light? Is it 50:50, or is it darker, or is it more light? Or can it not be determined by some rule, but each artist determines this relation to his own feeling? What is the true truth?
We avoid ambiguity in our use of dark/light by giving more weight to one or the other. Some say a 60/40 ratio, but any ratio between 60/40 and 80/20 works for a good composition. In the long run, we are responding to what's in shadow vs what's receiving direct light. Equal amounts of light and shadow result in ambiguity, so we give one a dominant amount. Hope this helps.

Dear Dianne. I started a Notans for a painting of a jungle scene. Suddenly I start to use yellow and red just to mark de light coming thru in my forest. Can I still called a Notans? Or a Notans needs to be only dark? Thank you for your quick tips. They are as gold.
To clarify, notan is a pattern of two values: light and dark. We use it as a preliminary step in painting to discover areas in light and areas in shadow. When a notan is done on the canvas as a part of the preliminary drawing, it serves as a guide--areas in the dark part of the notan are painted in shadow, and areas in white are painting not in shadow. As you see in Quick Tip 44 and also watch my free video on TH-cam called Notan: How and Why.
Hei :) About the transition colors in a sunny day, compered to after noon and a overcast day, if i have understood corectly, there is not much transitions going on compered to the afternoon and cloudy day. Is it possible you have or can nmake a quick tip about this ? Maybe how the shadows on a stone or tree are acting contra transition colour in this, and maybe what value it is good to start with on these, and what will be the mid and light value compered to the mid and light value., in these two situations. 1 think i know is that in sunlight the cast shadows has hard edges. And is it corrct to make the cast shadow I must better use the color from the mid plane in it ? Things I try to sort out even before try start painting :) Greetings :)
I am watching series 20 lessons 1&2. When you began applying the darks you were painting over an underpainting (gray) What did you use to do the underpainting? You are a magnificent teacher, and your willingness to share knowledge is unmatched.

Either light or shadow can be dominant, depending upon what the light source is doing. We try to avoid a 50/50 distrubution.

Not really, Sheryl. It serves as a preliminary drawing. Oil paint can be placed directly over it.

Thank you! I find any oil used as an underpainting influences the colors applied over it. I like the idea of the gray done in pen. Quick drying!
You can also use acrylic for underpainting. On my large canvases, I use a gray made of ivory black+burnt umber acrylic mixed with acrylic gesso.
I still don't understand what to do with the Notan drawing once it's done. Could you demonstrate making a painting off of a Notan drawing?

So shadow is always the darkest value 🤔 wowww was that a magic pen ? What is the name of it ? Combo pen ?
Put it another way - the darkest values will appear in shadow. The combo pen is a Tombow ABT.
