    I ran an aquaponics in my backyard on goldfish for about 6 months, got good herbs for my kitchen, Lost a Long and exhausting battle with slugs and spiders,(I'm arachnophobic) I just didn't have the room for ducks! But i learned so much from it. I know i want to have a little homestead, i want my kids to be able to run around and feel what freedom is, without my having to worry about people up to no good like you find here in the city. And i want to be able to build the big system i have been planning and replanning for years. So far we have managed to relocate to the general aria of the country we want land in, now the search begins. ^_^ If I want to build a forever home it has to be perfect.

    Interesting! I heard somewhere that if a tree is "worried" that it might die it will put more of its energy reserves into fruiting to ensure its ultimate survival through seeds. Don't know if that's true, but it would explain why the Tahitian Lime holds onto its fruit better when it's neglected a bit, and why it feels there's no need to expend the effort to produce fruit when it's regularly well fed.

    Thanks for the walk around. We recently had tree work done as well. 5 poplars between 60' and 100' tall. Was fun watching the guys cut them down, writing the cheque.... not so much.

    Do you think the salt is building up in the beds due to evaporation? Better a few plants than the fish and like you said you can always take some water out. Might be worth flushing the beds with the fresh water as you fill it just my thoughts mate.

    • @bigunone
      @bigunone 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      He had to add salt because his fish were showing signs of the lack of it, in the form of sores.

    • @SouthpawDavey
      @SouthpawDavey 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I know but it would stay in the beds as the water evaporates. He said he was going to lower the salt content by draining some off and diluting the system. But I think it could have built up in the clay as he bumped the salt right up.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I ended up dumping some of the water & replacing it with fresh to reused the levels Dave. I think the extra rain that over flowed the system through summer also helped in reducing the levels.

      Most dwarf fruit trees can be grown in containers. Air pruning pouches or tubs will allow the plant to grow a healthier root system than a plastic pot if that helps you out at all.
      Cheers.

  • @walterbunn280
    @walterbunn280 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ehhh..... If you're having salt issues, you should occasionally dose sugar or alcohol.
    I'd dose directly into the gravel beds immediately after they stop siphoning. The sugar/alcohol will cause a bacterial bloom, which will drop the dissolved oxygen, so don't do it too close to the return to fish. The plants can tolerate some amount of time in anaerobic conditions.
    The fixed carbon (sugar/alcohol) causes the bacteria to take up the salt(s) to fuel their growth.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could also be low Nitrate levels. Have you tested the levels recently?
      Low iron levels can also cause interveinal chlorosis which is a yellowing between the green veins of the leaves. Low magnesium can also cause yellowing but I haven't seen that be the cause as much as low nitrate & iron levels.
      HTH some.

I pump water into 100mm pipe and back to fish plus tee to one grow bed but very shallow. I have one tilapia (had six but others jumped out of tub.) I’ve recently added to the two lettuce plants one tomato and some strawberry plants. If I could send some photos. I have a 200 ltr drum I’m planning to use. For fish and get a few more fish. All in a 2m x 3m home made greenhouse. Been up since July last year.

      @@alexdalton5963 Hey Alex. I'd say you just don't have enough nitrate in the system. Best test kit you could get would be the "API Freshwater Test Kit" which I know is for sale in South Africa. Not sure about Zimbabwe through sorry. I also think you will need more bio filtration for the waste. 25L of 20mm rock is recommended for every fish you want to grow out to 500G.

      Hi Thank you.
      We will try out Goldfish first because we dont know about the temps in the summer at that location in the garden. Very sunny at midday till sunset. that could be too much sunhrs a day for just round about 350 400 l. im a little bit worried about water temps. Next year we will try catfish and harvest them at the end of the season.
      I now scaled up to 6 barrels. 2 for the fish with smaler side opening and a big scale plumming,
      so they can swim between the barrels and have enough space to do their thing :-) swim and eat.
      Im thinking all the time of raising the water only in 2 barrels to provide them more space. maybe with an overflow... but i think im starting to overengineering it :-)
      keep it simple as you always say.
      Its not a perfect spot in the garden and we have to do some prep work for next years location on the old Garden Barns roof. Its about 8 m2 and build out of concrete. But i dont want to risk anythink and we will rework the roof with some new steelwork an concrete. safety first. that spot has morning and evening sun and shade of an old ?needle? tree during the hot time a day.and that will be one of the ibc tanks. we will see how this years location will work. but for the first time it will be awesome i think :-)
      My english is not the best but i think u know what i want to say :-)
      Cheers Robert
