I am focusing on Animation for it and haven't done any illustration work for it. Okay so literally I went over to the original ducktale theme song and OMG SO MANY SMEARS!!! It's soo cool to see how much they used in animation! I changed the playback speed to 0.25 and, yes, it was kinda demonic.... buuut... the amount of smears in just like... the helicopter scene part is so awesome! Why don't we use smears as much anymore?? Modern day animating plus smears would make it so much better! Thanks Jazza for helping me actually realise the thought that people used to put in animation!!

When I was younger I used to watch spongebob a lot and I’d just look at all the blurred characters as the moved suddenly and all the multiple eyes between frames. Oh the nostalgia.
I remember this really great TV series Martin Mysteries that used shortcuts like these all the time they would constantly be stretching and at some points their limbs would be come a blurr the color of their sleeve when any combat scene would happen or even just basic interactions/turning around fast would be a big red blurr As a kid it doesn't stick out very much but it's so cool to come back and see these things i remember one a big monster kept throwing the main character around and they just kept flipping the animation of him flying into the same bookshelf multiple times.

The modern day animation is more like a flash type animation just objects moving around not actual individual frames being painted. Also 3D, I almost forgot about that. There was a period when almost everything moved to 3D and the worst kind, the robotic animated characters etc it was so awful to watch. From Disney to everyone else all used it and it was a pain. It was cheap to produce so they just pumped them out like crazy. Well not much had changed today. Less investment and more milking the product. People got tired of it really. That is why I moved mainly to older things and mainly anime. Something like Akira have every frame wallpaper worthy shots and everything moves.

I know this is an older video, but when Ducktales (2017) first started animation smears weren't used as much in some places. If you look a little closer at certain parts though I guarentee you'll get some really good animation smears.

After seeing long face jazza frame I can't unsee that singular frame in the intro now
Smears are less common nowadays because they are no longer a necessity. In the old days you had to draw each frame by hand. Because of that the framerate was much lower and fast motions would have looked really bad without the motion blur techniques. Today you can draw just one frame, copy and morph it as much as you want. That means you can produce much more frames in a shorter amount of time, leading to much higher frame rates. That's why the smear became an artistic effect that is actually quite hard to spot if you are just watching casually.
Cartoons are typically 24 frames a second, that's always been the stardard. High framerates typically look weird on cartoons, ESPECIALLY without smears.
I was also along this line of thinking like it must have something to do with refresh rates of either the viewing medium or industry standards...
But the computer morphed animations look baaaaad. Just because you can do it doesn't mean you should OTL

DT17 has several smears in the intro alone. For example in intro when Scrooge is jumping down to join his family in running towards the DT logo he has multiple arms and squished proportions.
The reason that the 30's "Rubber Hose" style animation, also seen in Cuphead, didn't have many smear frames, is that smear frames didn't really exist at that point. There were motion lines, but that was as far as it went. The focus was more on noodle limbs and ridiculous, yet dark, plots.
My favorite smear is in the Kim possible intro at the cheer scene. If you know, you know.

The Lego Movie is a cool example of animation smears in modern animation. Though it is computer 3D animation, it's also a stop motion animation (it's all in the bonus features of the movie and honestly so cool) This means they literally built the characters out of CGI Lego pieces. When a character is moving really fast, they are literally built out of blocks to mimic a smear, and it's just so clever! The best example of this is when we first see the girl Lucy Wild running around the garbage dump.
