- This is a video of my tilting trike taken on the day it was finished. I had been around the block on it a couple of times and when my neighbour Stu came home on his bike. He agreed to take a video. The trike is "Steve's Recumbent Bike with a wooden frame" (modularbikes.com.au) meets "Vi Vuong's" delta python trike ( • Video ).
Putting my feet down to "hobbyhorse" is done a couple of times, this is quite normal on the bikes I make, but either not possible or not useful on a great many others. You get better balance and a lower centre of gravity and can also still push forward a bit with your feet on the ground.

This is bloody brilliant!!! And you're in Australia! Yay. Please share your plans I want to make one straight away. I cant wait I have half a dozen old uprights I've been saving for a project like this. And out of wood, no mucking around with welding and other specialized jobs. Good on ya mate!

An interesting machine. I'd have liked to have seen how you did the front steering. Perhaps you could do a short video of that too.
I think the Russian reads "why 3 wheels" and the answer is "because I could". This vehiclee was made from an existing wooden bike which had frame problems. So not hard to build and I was curious. This 3 wheeler was simpler to make than the equivalent 2 wheeler - bottom bracket and pedals and 2 wheels replace 1 wheel, suspenion block, suspension pivot and rear triangle.

Задние два представляют собой "аммортизирующую" подвеску, - за счёт рычага при переезде препятствия экипаж преодолеет лишь половину высоты или глубины препятствия, тогда как колёса - всю высоту, но с половинной нагрузкой!!! Подобный вариант, таким образом позволяет получить беспрецедентную проходимость при меньшем размере колёс - в связке они помогая друг другу заезжают на препятствия почти вертикальные "скругляя" траекторию экипажа, меняя вектор его движения, а не останавливая его, чего не сделает одно колесо, какого бы размера оно ни было.

Im toying with something similar but 24 in rear 20 in front . I would prefer a wider rear track but I guess you have a restriction on turning the front before hitting chain on tyre

Your trike is very interesting. Can you slow down to a near stop and not tip over? If so that would be great for hills. How is the video so stable? Is the camera operator using a steadicam? or is the jitter that one would expect to see being smoothed out via software
Hi It really handles just like a bike and going up hills you can't rely on the 2 back wheels to support you. That said - when riding is is just a bit more stable than the equivalent bike - riding no hands is easier for example.

stevenurseau Oh, and I didn't answer the camera question. I think it was all shot on an iphone, anyway, my neighbour Stu was riding a racing bike the whole time he filmed it so no steadycam. Software I guess.

Hi Alan This trike design makes for a very simple frame design, the mechanism is very simple and consists mostly of standard bike and unicycle parts but gives good suspension. If you're starting from scratch you don't even have to work out how to make a split in the frame for a standard rear wheel. Regards Steve nurse
Thanks Stephen. Have you narrowed down any particular tilting trike that you think might be commercially feasible? I was surprised to hear (from your report) that Tripendo had ceased production. It seemed like a winner answering the problem you identified of trikes rolling if cornering too fast. I am currently planning to build a tilting trike but have found it difficult to decide which style would best suit the Melbourne environs. The Tripendo currently remains the most appealing, though the Velo tilt would be appealing if it was clear that the rolling resistance problem they appear to have identified, was solved. Another clear winner though not a Trike is the PoB, Peregrin on Birk which it seems (with a strong rider) achieved an average of 64 kmph over 3min and 40 sec, which is not bad considering it was done on a velodrome where any wind would have been encountered both ways negating any possible wind assist. BTW, are you on FB or Google+?
P.S. The work of John Tetz also interests me though it's hard to find information on his trike.

you could lenthen this to the point where you could sleep in it. the python design lends itself to even lower cg.. nice design.

Hi Joseph, the trike in this vid and all the trikes I've made like it have 2 Vee brakes on the front. This keeps all the cabling simple and the front wheel is so far forward that the trike won't tip over. My latest trikes like this one th-cam.com/video/PaoU14o1yB4/w-d-xo.html have all the cabling running through the steerer tube which keeps things neat and aero. Regards Steve Nurse

Why the hell does the left rear wheel get farther back than the right rear wheel?
Its very simple and it just works is why! Possibly the easiest way to make a tilting trike or trike frame. Flipping the back wheels makes no difference. 2 wheels on a pedal setup on the back of a front wheel drive trike. *Stephen* Thanks for the answer, I will philosophize on the subject. My comment is due to the principle that, in a turn to the right or to the left, the bike's behavior will change, since the base of support and the point of adhesion to the ground also changes, due to their different distance in relation to the front wheel.
Well so you say, but have you tried one? Philosophy is fine but when riding these machines I can't tell which wheel is forward by the trike's behaviour. I think the back end is brilliant. It reminds me of those Piagio MP3 scooters you can get with two wheels on the front. They used loads more components to keep both wheels parallel but lean with the bike. So did I on my three wheeler th-cam.com/video/T_0VECwOzWc/w-d-xo.html. Yours is dead simple. F***ing good job mate. (I have used asterisks here to disguise the word 'flipping' , which some readers might find shocking.)
Thanks Bob, your trike looks very neat and it looks like it does the job well. I didn't invent the wheel system but dragged it kicking and screaming towards something that can be considered useful. Vi Vuong invented it, here is his webpage with a few details and variations. en.openbike.org/wiki/~iLean I am building another trike using the system, and for me with several parts in stock its simpler than making the equivalent bike. Should you not put this en.openbike.org/images/openbike/9/94/ILeanCargo.jpg on the front of a normal bike? Just replace the front wheel with this. You need to keep the original trail and height at the front end to make it balance like a normal bike - and some hydraulic brakes to keep it in line when you stop. This would just be a conversion of a normal bike which already has a frame, pedals, gears etc.

why offset wheels?
Hi Molomosk and all. The whole offset wheel thing is just about keeping the frame and the whole human powered vehicle simple. With this back wheel setup, the frame is a slightly modified plank of wood and does not have to split at the back to accommodate the wheel.
