- The existing recording of this game was very garbly and wavy. Did what I could with it. Definitely better than what it was. Adjusted color and contrast as needed also. Not good enough to be called an 'enhancement', just 'improved'.
Thanks Dave! My son can't believe the NFL actually had a game like this.
Wait until your son hears about the Playoff Bowl...
@@GeorgeDamon the players hated that game
When I look back at these videos, I can't believe that we eagerly watched this game. But we certainly did. I remember the college all stars versus the Super Bowl champs. The year after this, the game ended in a pathetic tsunami off Lake Michigan. Terrible way for this tradition to end.
@@thetruthissweet2847 They sure did. Lombardi called it the "Toilet Bowl" and the "Losers Bowl". There's no way players would agree to play that game today. Look what a farce the Pro Bowl became.
This was not an NFL game.
It’s cool that this game exists
Dave Volsky you are a great man.
Your channel is like a breath of fresh air back to a time when my life was simpler. Love these videos on you channel. Thank you for posting
What a time in sports "commentary" as well to have Howard Cosell and Keith Jackson together doing a game.
Poor Keith Jackson.
@JohnnieWalkerDread
Lol, I thought the same thing.
Thank you for this gem! I’m old enough to remember these days. So many names that went on to great or solid careers. Sweetness showed he was going to be a problem for the league even though he went to an HBCU. This is awesome!
It's great you included commercial s
I like watching the old commercials
Favorite part of these old videos lol 💯💯
As someone who was about to turn 17 when this game was played, it is fascinating to realize how I was affected, or not, by commercials running at that time. It's a bit of self discovery.
So awesome that this game is preserved for history! Thank you!
Steeler fan approved. Thumbs up !
Definitely a different era. Could you imagine the college all stars(recent draftees) of today playing the Chiefs? 😂
I was thinking about that. It's hard to believe there was a time when college players thrown together without any cohesion could beat a seasoned NFL team. It's unthinkable today. It would be a slaughter. Why was it different then??
@@jmbuff1The last time the college team won was in 1963 vs the 1962 Packers.
After then, the pro game became more well scouted and developed perhaps.
It wouldn’t be fair simply because the Chiefs play together and have the same playbook. The college players don’t play on the same team or even know each other.
@@Ram44 well I was thinking more of players from both the college and pro squads not wanting to take a chance on injury in an exhibition game. Hence the different era. Guys back then I guess had their reasons for playing or wouldn’t think of not playing
Even back then, you would think that a more logical matchup woulda been either the college All-Stars or the previous season’s mythical national champion vs. the team with the worst record in the NFL the year before, but I guess the TV ratings probably wouldn’t have been as good.
Having grown up in Boston, I like Russ Francis, but I have a feeling that Payton kid is someone to watch.
Keep an eye on Randy White, too. I think the Cowboys are gonna be glad they drafted him.
Walter slipped and fell for no gain on his first run. Certainly not a sign of things to come.
No. He was a total washout.
Hard to believe the NFL teams allowed their TOP DRAFTS to play in this and run risk of serious injury....WOW
Just wait till they get to training camp, two a days beating the hell out of each other, full on scrimage, Oklahoma drills, you name it. This was a walk in.the park.
The game that next season featured an unbelievable storm
The existing copy of that game is even worse than this one.
I can attest to that :)

I was at that game with my parents!
The existing recording of this game was very garbly and wavy. Did what I could with it. Definitely better than what it was. Adjusted color and contrast as needed also. Not good enough to be called an 'enhancement', just 'improved'.
I would definitely call this an enhancement Dave! Thank you for your work and effort!
This one is tricky because the stadium lighting is so bad - the ends of the field are practically in darkness. Good work here as always.
@@2095yourstruly I would call it an enhancement, too. Dave has made the presentation better than it was, which makes the viewing experience richer. That qualifies it in my book.
@@genesmiley9866 Yeah, year in and year out that was one of the darkest games you'd see. It's like they didn't turn on all the lights in the stadium.
Top notch
Great job Dave! Can't believe the Steelers players played all out in a sloppy exhibition game! Talk about risking your whole season to needless injury. Wow!!
Yeah, you couldn't do something like this today.
Players didn't think that way back then, starters played in all the pre season games and occasionally they played the whole game.
The Steelers would have been embarrassed to lose to a team of college players. I know it can't happen now but it would be cool if they brought that game back.
This game started out as a way to raise the visibility and popularity of pro football. Believe it or not, in the '30s and '40s, the pro game was overshadowed by college football, which was a rah-rah part of the national mindset - 2nd only to Major League baseball. By the '70s, it was no longer needed, as the NFL was gigantic on the national scene.
I watched this game on TV when I as a teen. I really enjoyed those SB Champs vs College All-Stars matchups. Too bad they stopped and replaced it with that waste of time called the NFL Pro Bowl.
The Pro Bowl (or All-Star game in the early years) started in 1939, making it almost as old as the College All-Star game, which began in 1934.
The salaries got so big, owners were trying to protect their investments I guess.
I was trying to tell someone about this game for years, and nobody believed me! I've been searching for this for nearly 10 years!!! 🙂🙂
Thanks for posting!!
Stevie B.....one of the BEST arms ever.
Beautiful!!
Brings back so many memories especially the commercials, My how things have changed,
Great Job.
Wow Bartowski! Payton aka Sweetness!
Those college unis look like the Cowboys throwbacks of the 60s.
Thanks Dave! I appreciate all the hard work you put into making these videos.
The All-Star game in 1976 had that crazy lightning storm ending.
That was one bizarre experience. It was the game that never ended.
these games were BIG FAMILY TIME in our house........ ever year they had these College vs Pro games... I think there were 6 or 7 of them..... 70-76 or 71-76
In the first commercial of this video, for the Oldsmobile Cutlass, the salesman was played by Bob Wells who was also known as 'Hoolihan' of 'The Hoolihan and Big Chuck' show on Cleveland's Channel 8. They were comedic late night movie hosts who taped a lot of skits.
😂 remember angelo mushmouth eating puzza???
@@robertroberts9782 Sure do. Good times. The only time he got beat was by a dog.
When I was a kid I watched big chuck and Hoolihan and then big chuck and little John
I got to meet Steve Bartkowski in the late '80s when I was in high school. I asked him what it was like to play against the Steelers in the '70s. He just shook his head and specifically mentioned this game. Said they scored on them quick in the 1st quarter. All that did is make the Steelers stop playing around and start actually playing. Crazy how many Hall of Famers are on the field on both sides of the ball.
This is so awesome. Thank you!!
It’s so cool they used to do this
Thanks for the ... improvement, Dave! :) It's a challenge to persuade younger fans that there was a time when the defending NFL champs played a team of collegians, recently graduated or younger, because it was an open question as to which team would win. Or that a Vince Lombardi-coached Packers team was the last to lose to the College All-Stars.
Dave, you keep dishing out the joy!!! I appreciate all the work ou put into these videos.
I didn't know they used to play this game, now it's unthinkable. What a surprise to see John Travolta on one of the ads.
I thought that was Robbie Benson at first. The theme of the ad is so homespun and folksy that I just didn't associate him with disco in Brooklyn.
I can't believe they would even play this game. And Bradshaw is down with a broken back 1:09:53. Your team's star draft pick just got smashed to pieces by the Steel Curtain. All for a meaningless game. But to be honest it is pretty cool to watch such unique game.
They wouldn't play it today because of the risks involved to high-value "assets", but during its time the game was played for the Chicago Charities. It was done for all the right reasons, and in its 42-year history raised over $4 million--which doesn't sound like a lot by today's standards, but was probably very helpful back in the day. Football (and the world) was much simpler then, so a game between pros and college players didn't seem as odd as it does today.
eBay has an opened can of 1975 Iron City Beer with the Steelers for $3.01 plus $4.24 shipping
I have a couple of those but they are opened.
The unknown to be perhaps the greatest RB ever Walter Payton.
the most amazing thing is that this was actually a thing for 41 years
This is a real throwback!!
I WAS AT THIS GAME!
Another great job by DV makin' em look better than they did.
I used to love this game as a kid because it meant a new season was upon us!
This is awesome!
I had forgotten about this game from 75’. My dad and I watched it.
pretty sure i watched this 1 as a teen, just based on the image of the 1976 cfb all-star uniforms
the ads r the best part tho - "protein 29"
and k. jackson on the call? wow.
thank u!
The good old days. When you bought a Tv and just plugged it in! Now we pay for 300 channels we don't need and have to pay more for NFL and Baseball. Greed kills everything!
Another era. Now I think we're closer to the NFL not having any preseason games as they are increasingly unwatchable. But thanks for posting this.
Randy White. About to embark on a stellar NFL career. This is so cool.
And against the Steelers. He's see them again in January.
I collected beer cans at age 10 in 1975 and had that 1975 steelers can as well as soo many other themed IC cans and other cans from the Pittsburgh Brewing Company. I grew up in the South Hills of Pittsburgh
Those Steelers Iron City beer cans are vintage.
I think Steve Joachim played exactly one snap in the NFL: a handoff late in a Jets’ blowout.
Love the pre-game music. Memories of being a kid again.😎🏈
This game is notable because of Walter Payton and his performance. Payton made Lambert look silly multiple times in this game. Thanks for your work on this, Dave!
1972 Miami Dolphins vs Make a Wish Kids! That was a classic!
is that the video on youtube of 'make a wish' kid trying to run for TD but gets smashed into ground by DB.
Well-done! Terrific game.
Grand Olds Gang? Must be local! 😁
Yes - WTAE was and is Pittsburgh’s ABC affiliate. Loved the Iron City Can as well!
Crazy how this used to be "played as usual" and now it would be almost criminal and comical. Great find.
This is awesome, they should still do this, would be fun to watch this type of All Star Game.
This is Great! Thanks for Posting!
Seeing Walter play on the field were he would have his H of Fame career is awesome
Roger Goodell: I don't see any politics. This is unacceptable.
Did you see Belichick use this to talk about Walter Payton on Inside the NFL the other day? Guessing he saw your upload.
"Sweetness".
The guy never did anything half speed. While most of the other college all-star starters ran onto the field at a fast jog during introductions, Payton goes full tilt.
This is great i saw this as a kid i like the IRon xity beer commercial keith Jackson was great Thanks for this
The undefeated '72 Dolphin team could only get across the 50 yd line 3 times in the 1973 game against the all-stars. They did win the game however 14-3. One of the great Packer teams actually lost one of these games. The Steelers came back strong the year after this, winning 24-0.
I remember hearing about this game but never thought salvaged tape existed.
Reading the title feels like an Onion article!! Awesome upload, thanks!
It was real! The College All-Star Pro Game was an exercise in pointlessness, but what the heck. It was football!
This is like traveling back in time !!!
I was 7 years old growing up in western PA .....and do not remember this game!
That college all-star team was no joke.
Great!!! 👏🏻 Thank you!!
Thanks! So many HOFs in this game
Dave for Hall of Fame!
Awesome Payton was great in this game.
Hair is protein?
Haven't you ever eaten any? Try it.
Very Cool Addition to the library!
Bring this game back!
It would never work. Players have so much money in the balance, that they are skipping bowl games to avoid being injured before singing with the NFL. They'd certainly skip this.
@@brianarbenz1329 I can still dream 😁
The networks hated doing live football at night at Soldier Field. The lighting was terrible for one. The facilities even in 1975 were pretty bad and really still had accommodations dating to the Depression. I think it was in 1973 that ABC had to carry a College All-Stars game from Soldier Field in black & white because the TV camera technology could not make up for the terrible lighting situation. This stadium (at the time) was really designed for daytime high school (Prep Bowl), Saturday college games and Sunday afternoon NFL games after the Bears relocated from Wrigley Field. If memory serves the College All-Stars games was stopped not long after this. It was the brainchild of George Halas so as to promote the NFL back in the 1930's.
The dude that broke his leg went on to have like a 10 year NFL career, so all good.
Great job as always Dave..!
Preston Pearso before the Cowboys picked him up for the 75 season. He was a big part of their SB run that year.
It is amazing that the Super Bowl champs played the college all stars. We now need to see Georgia or the best college team play the last place NFL team. The NFL team would probably still win.
Thanks. Love this stuff
Cool Payton played in this game.
Howard Cosells grand son now announces the players for the New York Mets.
Thanks Dave Volsky.
I remember watching these days as a kid. Always thought it was great. Now the college players won't even play in the bowl games.
I'm a 57 year old Steelers fan and I remember the game. If I remember correctly the game was postponed because of a downpour in the second half of the game with bad thunder and lightning. Correct me if I am wrong. Thanks 👍
That was the next year's game, which wound up being the last all-star game ever played -- th-cam.com/video/n-S93zBFBcQ/w-d-xo.html
SWEETNESS!!!!
Great! Too bad you don't have the 1957 Lions playing the College All-Stars & losing. It was the beginning of the end for the Lions. I remember that game. I was 11.
I remember that game
Bart and Payton? This was probably one of the best college all-star teams ever. NFL was great back then.
i loved watching these when they were still played
effin '75. 21 in tv and foggy vision we had.
Nice enhancement!
dam morgan freeman doing a deodrant commercial in 1975 he turned out to be special
My Dad took me to that game. I was 9.
Did you notice how far the offensive huddle was from the line of scrimmage? 😂
Great future stars. Dennis Harrah, Russ Francis and the great Walter Payton.
AWESOME!!!!
VOLSKY 2024!!!
I would love to see them bring this back... Let's say the Kansas city chiefs vs the 2024 college seniors... It would really be interesting....
@@JamalMcCoy-kt5zf I have a better chance of replacing Jamarr Chase this weekend for the bengals as their #1 WR than this game being revived in today's football
@@michaelschneider5938 Good luck this weekend, Michael! Hope that Bengals' defense isn't too hard on you.

Walter Payton's last college year against the almighty Pittsburgh Steelers.
Walter Payton!! Thanks Dave!
Wow, a young Travolta makes a commercial appearance!
Great stuff indeed… thx for sharing.
What a boat car 75 Cutlass
I remember those games, nowadays, the pros would kill them, though.😊
