I had to find someone black to review this. Everyone else was down playing everything like sundown towns is normal. One even said thicc and the black woman chose to walk to the next town like wtf

This was a great first episode! I notice something else in reference to the shot of Atticus sitting reading the book. Don’t come for me, this is just a theory. We know Jordan Peele is all about subliminal messages. If you go back to that shot, you’ll noticed on one side of the field crops have been planted and on the right side, it’s unkempt. Atticus is reading a book. Back in the days of sharecropping, most sharecroppers didn’t read or didn’t have or couldn’t afford the proper education as they were busy sharecropping “Jim Crow Era”. When some sharecroppers became educated, they no longer wanted to work the fields and in search of a better life, Southern blacks would move north. Atticus lived in Chicago and when he returned to Lovecraft Country, the white cop constantly put emphasis on him being too smart for his own good. Smart educated black people were seen as threats especially black men hence why he told Atticus to send Letitia out as a pawn because she’s a woman and sees her as not being as strong both physically and mentally to go get the car; but she proves him wrong with her strength and the ability to equally perform a task that most men are considered for.

Atticus did not want her to get the car, he volunteer to go. The sheriff said he couldn't because he felt that Atticus was too smart and he would try to do something or leave(weirdo?) if he went to get the car so he forced Leticia to get the car. Atticus could not stop Leticia or prevent her from going because the sheriff would have shot him.
I feel like when the music is modern it’s more directorial. Like the two arts melding. Almost like some of those black history documentaries accompanied with modern Hip-Hop. It’s a thing 🤣

Hip-Hop is the worst sound track music for me, whether for movies, commercials, or whatever. Doesn't fit what I'm seeing at all, most of the time.

I ❤️ this book and can’t wait for this show! Lovecraft was racist as hell despite his awesome stories but Matt Ruff tried to remove that in this Sci-horror.
Which is why having a predominately Black cast is so amazing!
Luckily he regretted at the end of his life before he died at 40
Just finished the first episode. The uncle played by Courtney B Vance is my favorite character so far. They got me hooked. Some of the music like sinnerman and the ambient music was solid in the first episode. Just happy to have any good horror and something new to watch.

I loved it.
And yes I am especially happy it made me uncomfortable as a white guy the scenes where it counted. I'm happy we don't shy away from that dark period of history. We need to face up to it if we are to change.

I had to stop it three times because my heart was beating so hard, I had to calm down. I wanted to scream at my iPad when Lettie was running through the forest. Omg that part was so scary. The cops were super scary too. Every time they showed a cop car, I got super agitated. I loved the block party scene and that Uncle George’s daughter drew sci fi comics. I loved the clothes Lettie wore and that she was so tough.

As a person who enjoys quite a lot of Lovecraftian fiction, I've become aware of his high-key racism and xenophobia. Even though I find the man repugnant in more ways than one, the Cthulhu mythos drew me in... kind of like Tolkien did with lord of the rings. The worlds he created were immersive, and the horror was palpable and visceral.
I was frankly baffled when I saw billboards for this show, because I would think a lot of people would avoid Lovecraft's work because of his problematic views. This isn't to say they shouldn't have, just that I figured the risk of blowback would keep modern production companies from green lighting a concept like this.
I'm happy to hear that this show captures the essence of Lovecraftian horror with a more diverse and openminded mentality. Perhaps it'll start a trend of modernized adaptations that actually respect the source material!
The show addresses Lovecraft's racism as well as borrowing from the source material for the story

Read the book. This is a great series but there are quite a few changes.

I think Jordan Peele produced it, if so...he has a bit of clout and he has been making the black horror genre come to life lately, so that makes sense they would greenlight. I enjoy the series so far, the representation rocks.

Lol, as soon as I read the book I thought the same thing: Lovecraft must be rolling in his grave and I loved it. He was such an influential writer and the idea of taking his pervasive atmosphere of existential dread and twisting it like the book/episode 1 did is brilliant. I love how they have the fantastical elements but use it as a vehicle to show the true existential horror was the one of living as a PoC in America. Like I’ve never feared a sunset so much. It really helps bring forward this real slice of history that, being white and non American I have always fallen short of understanding, or feeling in such a visceral way. Really looking forward to the next episodes and how they grow the story from the book.

Not being American or a baseball fan, I at first missed the symbolism of Jackie Robinson (the first black American sportsman to break the colour bar in his sport) smashing the Cthulu-esque monster in the dream sequence at the start of the show. The monster represents Jim Crow, and it's reforming after Robinson steps over it shows how the fight has to go on to get justice for all in the 'land of the free'. Using Lovecraftian tropes as a metaphor for racial prejudice is inspired. The author might well turn in his grave, but he might also acknowledge the skill with which this has been done.

I love that you mentioned the costumes, because just from the trailers and clips I can see they are amazing (I'm debating adding HBO back now!!). Plus - the way the consumer has dressed Atticus - the shirts are perfectly fitted, the high, tight armholes, he looks like a superhero. The camera definitely lingers on his body more than other genre shows.

They could've added some great music from the 50s or even put a twist on some of the songs letting current artist cover the songs. I loved Alice Smith's cover of "Sinnerman" at the end. Love your review. I’ve been reading Lovecraft for years (I’m a novice writer) and have been looking forward to this. I have always hated the racist/xenophobic aspect of his writing and am glad this show does a full 180.
I had no idea the co-creator worked on Underground! That makes so much sense to me now! I was heartbroken when that show got cancelled. But I'm digging this one for sure
I'm so excited for this I loved the book and was excited for this adaptation. I felt your enthusiasm its staggering to finally see us represented in a show steeped in horror, fantasy and sci-fi those are my favorite genres so cannot wait.
I 100% agree with you about the use of some contemporary pop music in the series. I think it could have worked better if they had created hip hop or gothic music that sampled original 1950's music. Maybe they wanted to be able to sell a soundtrack album to generate more money.

Great review. I only saw the pilot but I texted my friend that I think it was a literally perfect first episode. The showed and didn’t tell and set everything up so well. Pilots are hard to get right but this was perfect. I could also just watch this show for the costumes and scenery too. I don’t like horror generally but this show seems more Spielberg ish in that there are more than one genre going on. Edit: the most horrific part for me was the racists literally hunting people and making you feel like you as the viewer are being hunted with them.
I just loved all of it! The costumes are so well done, and the series has such texture. I'm hooked!!

I read the book and I'm here for any changes they make! I appreciate the author stepped aside and let Misha Green play around in her sandbox to make this the best story possible. I just saw episode 1 and I can't wait what other changes she made. This is the first time I've read the book, loved it, and love the adaption just as much!

The idea of going to a department store or leaving his house would have frightened Lovecraft.
MY favorite series of 2020. It went beyond off the rails in the best way possible and showed me some things I've never seen in a TV show before. If you're going to go for it, then just fucking go for it...and that's what they did.

I'm so glad i decided to watch this, I was able to cancel my hbo subscription because I didn't really watch anything on there anymore but something told me to watch this show. Horror movies are my favorite genre but I've never been into horror TV shows I never got into Ahs but X-files is my favorite show of all time so I've been waiting on a good series like this for a long time, i absolutely live for the fact that the cast is predominantly black and the setting being in the Jim crow era whew im so excited for this and it rekindled my love for reading horror novels. I'm so glad i came across this show I keep saying that lol but its been a seriously hard year for me, i lost one of the most important people in my life this year, my mom and she would have loved this show I got my love of horror from her we used to stay up late and watch the scariest of movies and we would binge watching X-Files 24/7 RIP Mom (07/06/2020). I love Ruby she's my favorite character so far and Hypolita is my girl I'm so hype for her to come into the story. I will definitely be reading the novel
Edit also the soundtrack is everything, I'm huge into music and I wholeheartedly believe a soundtrack can make or break a movie/TV show
