2:05 ooooh, getting artsy with the shots I see. I've done pachinko before. If you decide to go to one of these places bring some hearing protection. They are loud and the noise never stops.
I do think the taste for gambling starts early in Japan, with children having the habit of buying gachapons, and playing UFO catchers (and most recently, gacha mechanics in mobile games). These things don't give out money, but the rush of betting you'll get the item you want (even with the risk of not getting anything at all) is very similar to gambling for money. Especially for children for whom those toys and items actually have more value than money. This gambling feeling is even present more discreetly in other japanese customs, like lucky bags. Because of that, I don't think the gambling problem in Japan will go away so soon.
I’ve been to a pachinko parlor in Tokyo. The place is absurdly loud, specially compared to how quiet and reserved Japanese society is. And the smell is appalling. It seem like a portal to a parallel dimension.
Work hard, play hard! Asian's are known as big, hard gamblers. You should see the one's at my local casino, I could never play that big and reckless and didn't Japan approve of casino's just a year or two ago? Wonder how that will go if correct.
No lie though. Especially asians that immigrated to the U.S, Europe and Australia. They would straight up go to someone house and gamble. Just by playing some playing cards.
why is there a gambling problem in japan? answer: they're trained to gamble from childhood. gachapon is essentially gambling. gacha moblie games, etc. etc. etc.
I’ve been told told that when you gamble you have to set your mindset to, “I am spending money for the TIME to entertain myself and not to win money.” Also, go into the gambling parlor with a finite amount of money, so when/if you run out, you really run out and have to leave. Example: Go in with $100 or $200 dollars only, leave the rest of your money and cards at home. (I have to do this with bookstores. 😔)
I’ve never even heard about that before. Casino’s are all new to me; I’ve yet to have the experience of entering into an intense gamble for my life, and I never realized such a large amount are so attached to that adrenaline rush gambling gives them.
You know, you could say I've gambled *with* my life, but I've always been pretty risk-averse about money. I've gambled at charity casino nights but the point there is mostly to have fun losing so the charity gets the money, or donate it anyway if you win. :)
I won $500 in Vegas back in 2014 playing a roulette, but made a mistake not quitting at that time (due to poor understanding of how the casino tactics work, now I know better!). Ended up in a -$40 at the end, but stopped there cause I realised I was gonna be on a losing spree after a series of winnings. Generally don't have an addiction, but I do recommend strongly to those who go to gambling or casinos to always brign more people with you who are immune to gambling things-alike and ask them to "pull you out" in case you get carried away.
I played at a Pachinko parlor in Matsuyama, I was so stupid and started playing and 2 and a half hour later i walk out deaf and starving didn't realize that time had flown by. But the sound does machines give off...

Gacha isn't gambling, because you can't get money out of it, you can't lose (you can only get less) and the game design is a part of gacha. However I think you can call those "gambling-like", because the gacha part itself works in a similar way to a slot machine. However at the end of the day there are more mechanisms.
