When you work up your garden space,try working the leaves into the soil with some cow manure ,chicken or rabbit manure. It will really help keep the soil nice for whatever you plant also adding straw wherever you can find it. Sometimes people will have old straw just sitting around that they have no use for, they might barter sell or just give it away to get rid of it.if you do this every year you will have fantastic soil , maybe sell some of the produce for added income if needed. Just some free advice from my own experiences.
