This vide is the most complete and informative set of instructions I found on the internet to show how to adjust the R8050 front derailleur. I worked on mine for weeks and learned a few things by trial and error which may help many of you. The main lesson is that you must get the derailleur cage parallel with the large chain ring. This is the most essential step or all, and it took me weeks to figure it out. When I loosened the main support bolt to move the cage up and down, I was totally unable to get the cage to toe in by 1mm as instructed, no matter how hard I pushed it in. or tried to bend the cage The key to this is to back out the upper 2mm screw before tightening the mounting bolt. The upper 2mm screw is different than the high limit screw wihich is quite evident. I flashlight or phone light is very helpful to see the adjustments. The upper 2mm screw is not visible at all. It can only be accessed through a deep long hole that is not visible unless the derailleur is set to the smaller chainring. At the end of the deep hole, you can engage the 2mm hex screw and back it out the screw counterclockwise. This way the front of the cage can be set to align with the chain ring, 1-3mm above the chain ring teeth and toe in the back of the cage by 1 mmm inside the chain ring. Then the 2mm screw is advanced clockwise till the cage rotates thill it is parallel with the chain ring. If you do not do this properly, the derailleur will never shift properly. If your derailleur has been messed with and adjusted before you should make sure the indexed settings are fully accessible by pushing the junction button till the indicator light turns red and the cage is set at mid position. I moved the position of the cage with the left shining paddle till it would not move anymore, locating the extreme position. I then moved the cage back to center 18 steps till it is at mid position. The rest of the instructions in this video are pretty straightforward. I hope this helps folks avoid some of the frustrations I encountered in setting up my front derailleur.
Many thanks for you video. I watched it several times but could not figure out why there was still chain rub after installing new chain. What helped me was, that while in small chainring, I placed 2.5mm LN key between big chainring and bottom of derailleur. Having 2,5mm gap instead 1-2mm gap solved it.
Seriously, this is the best guide ever on youtube. I couldnt even figure out the instructions from shimano, but got the indexing right following your step by step guide on the first try. Kudos for the vid!
do you know, love the what must be bristolian accent and despite it sounding boring, to me today you are a hero.... All day I have been trying to sort my front derailiuer . I've checked 100 vids when things didn't or wouldn't go right... All I needed was to fit that tab that you so eloquently demonstrated. Jeez, I should have listened to you in the first place. thanks so much for this vid it's the best,.
Some brilliant tips here, the pushing in of the rear of the cage a couple of mm to ensure the B screw is under tension before adjustment, is one of those things you can't learn from a book and need a quality mechanic to show. Thank you.
Great videos, having bought a frame in January your guides have just about got it built up with the 8000 Ultegra groupset just waiting for the 300mm cable to connect the front mech now and I’m good to go. Thanks a lot
Thank you for your video - really helpful - made the difference between me sorting my Di2 front mech/getting out on my bike and having to give up and put bike into the (currently very busy) bike shop. 👍
Good video, but I have a question. Should the outer plate of the derailleur cage be over the outer chainring when setting the 2 mm gap or is acceptable to set the gap with the cage moved inboard (small chainring position)?
Thanks for all of your videos, I regularly learn new things from them. My front mech seems to start auto trimming for no reason after 1-2 hrs of riding, you can't see it but you can hear it, very annoying. The battery is fully charged and otherwise both front and back shift perfectly. I wondered if there is a sensor that prompts the auto trim (?), maybe I have a problem with that. Any ideas? 🙏
Great video thanks ! I've been having a problem recently getting the FD to shift down properly under load, in the shop it shifts fine but under load it generally will not shift down. Have you encountered that before ? Any ideas what to look for to make it work properly ? Thanks !
Great explanation ,best on TH-cam. A question for you if you could help please. I have just got bike with DI2 and have had a few problems with front derailleur. last two rides mid ride the tail of cage has been catching the teeth of large chainring - like you explained if the derailleur has not been set up correctly. it has been ok for 60 mile on one ride and 80 mile on another until problem occurred - it seems like the cage has moved too far outward causing the problem - gently bending the tail of the cage inward or resetting the derailleur gets rid of problem. got me baffled. any help appreciated - cheers
I couldn't get the cage angle correct just using the adjustment screw. Had to loosen the downtube bolt and rotate the whole derailleur a bit. Once I did that, I could get the cage angle straight enough that I no longer got rubbing.
I have a giant TCR brought 8 years ago need to replace my front derailleur will r8000 fit on my 10 speed also got to replace inner cable if not could you recommend a replacement I have a ultegra on what came with the bike
Hello, thanks for the video, very useful. Can you please tell me if there is an electronic micro-adjustment on the ultegra FD 8050 ? Shimano dealer manual says there is one, but it looks that it does not work on my bike. Thanks !
Yes there is a micro adjustment feature! Make sure the firmware is upto date and the derailleur is set on the largest chainring and the largest sprocket on the cassette!
@@FreeToCycle you were right, I had to be in « big - big » configuration for the set up. And actually it was impossible because the low screw of the rear derailleur was not set up correctly! Once ut was fixed I could finally access the micro adjustment mode for the front derailleur. Shame on Canyon for poor adjustment of derailleurs on the bikes they sell… and chezrs to you !
Is this the same for Dura Ace? I've followed your steps to set up DA but still having issues if it's on big/big, even having issues when it's big ring and one cog up from big/big, it drops to the small ring. I know you're probably not supposed to run big/big but sure you should be able to be one cog up I think? Thanks for the tutorial though!
So where is the rear derailleur set to? Smallest or highest cog? Because when it's in the smallest, the front will trim itself and won't be in the smallest position. Im currently trying to get it to work :D.
Great video. I have a 2014 Ultegra Comp with internal cabling and I want to upgrade to Ultegra Di2. From everything I have looked at it would appear that the frame is compatible but I took it to my LBS today and the guy said that it needed to holes for the front derailleur wires. I have one hole on the rear side of the front derailleur which from this video appears to be in the right place. Am I missing something? How do I know if the holes on my bike will be big enough to feed the wires through?
The holes need to be 5mm in diameter, the one for the front derailleur is on the seat tube just under the derailleur hanger (if you have a braze on type).
Thanks for the vid! Bit off-topic - how are the Prime wheels doing? I had to change bearings on the rear hub twice already! (Bought them in March 2019.) Do you have the same issues with them? Thanks. Happy riding :)
@@FreeToCycle Might be worth changing the hubs then (or just buy the rims and lace them yourself). They seem to be fine with a lot of beating off the road...
The low position is adjusted electronically. You need to put the system in adjustment mode using button on junction A then use shift up/down to adjust. Page 137 in dealer's manual.

By far the best guide out there for this, finally got my front Mech sorted after struggling with the Shimano documents for ages. Thanks!
Excellent guidance in detail Thanks 5 star
Great stuff. Amazing teaching! Clear. Well-paced. Informative. I've become my own mechanic thanks to your videos. Nice work. Keep it coming.
I've been having problems with my FD for ages, followed this step by step and it's working beautifully now, thanks so much.
You always have the tips that help me figure out little problems with the drivetrain. Thank you!
Great guide, followed it to the letter and my Di2 is now running super smooth like new. Thanks

You got me out of trouble the night before a big ride tomorrow! Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Love this guy. He knows what hes doing unlike a lot of guys on youtube. Nice work.
Thank you for this video! Saved me a trip to the LBS. ❤
Thank you for this video and the rear derailleur one too. They were very helpful for me to install and adjust the 6870 pieces.

Thank you for a really good, easy to follow video
Very nice instructional video. Made it a lot easier to properly setup my FD! thanks.
Great video, only thing missing is how to use the Plug Cover. Nothing about this is mentioned in the installation manual.
Thanks ever so much....... perfect 1st time following your instructions.
Excellent, thanks for this helpful video. Wish I had watched it a frustrating hour ago 😳.
This is great. Thanks for all the helpful videos.
Worked perfectly for me! Tnx a lot
What a fantastic video. Thanks so much!
Very well explained - handy for my first Di2 setup

...aside from cabeling ( sd300-to-sd50 /w adapter), is it possible to use a fd-r8150 instead of the fd-r8050 in a 11s r80xx groupset?

Hello. What should I do if the big chainring touches the chain guide when I use 52-11 as you are explaining at the end of the video?
Adjust the H limit screw!

I am also upgrading a mechanical frame to Di2. I've just run the cable through the mechanical port you mention and adapted the grommet to seal.

Bit off-topic - how are the Prime wheels doing? I had to change bearings on the rear hub twice already! (Bought them in March 2019.) Do you have the same issues with them? Thanks. Happy riding :)
It seems most of the Prime wheels suffer from bearings going bad quickly!!
@@FreeToCycle Might be worth changing the hubs then (or just buy the rims and lace them yourself). They seem to be fine with a lot of beating off the road...
Try high quality bearings they usually last a lot longer!!
@@FreeToCycle Unfortunately these are hard to find in these non-standard sizes...
Yes that is the issue with these hubs and the 15267 bearings!
Why is there only a high screw? No low screw?
Thought it was just me. Guess nobody is going to speak on this so I can fix that part of my problem.
The low position is adjusted electronically. You need to put the system in adjustment mode using button on junction A then use shift up/down to adjust. Page 137 in dealer's manual.
