  • In this video we breakdown the costs for our first 8-week trip to France and Spain in a Compass/Elddis 155 motorhome, covering the costs of fuel, food, camping, sightseeing, vets and Eurotunnel crossing. We know everyone enjoys travelling in different ways and prioritises spending money on different thing: this is our way and we hope it helps you to plan your trip.

    It’s great to see you spent so little on tolls. So many TH-cam travellers seem to think they have to use motorways but you get a better understanding of the country your passing through on the smaller roads.

      Hi David, we avoid tolls if we can, not because of the cost but we can see nicer areas. We’re lucky as we don’t have a time limit on where we need to be (other than the 90 days!) so we travel leisurely at a slower pace.
      Thanks for watching 👀

    I loved your video very informative and enjoyed the sights. A little "sniggle"....Please don't let the music get too loud, I don't feel it enhances. It spoils it for me, because I listen with headphones 😀

    Enjoying your adventures, just read on your website that you were the original van lifers back in 2007 ! That was some trip indeed you did.😮

      Thanks Mark. Yes, 2007 was a great year for us, only took 15 years to save up to do it again!!

    Glad I found your video, we've booked to go to Delft in Holland in April and I changed the ferry from Harwich to the Hook of Holland as the ferry crossing to Calais is so much cheaper and I want to stay in France, Belgium and Germany as well. Then if it goes well, we want to go to Spain towards the end of the year. Great to see the breakdown on costs, thanks

    Excellent video! Our trip to Spain with our caravan for three weeks in total cost us £1600 including the Townsend Thoreson ferry!
    That was over thirty years ago, and did include a lot of toll roads. I think you two worked it correctly expense wise. And yes it is difficult getting copy free music that is actually nice to listen to! I haven’t achieved that yet, doubt I will! Excellent vlog! Thank you for posting! All the best to you both.

    • @davidmatthews3093

      That was expensive for 30 years ago. We did six weeks; Germany, France, Spain, three weeks in Portugal and back for about that in 1995 towing our caravan.

    Interesting 🤨 , think you were quite frugal but that’s no bad thing ! Thanks for sharing 👍

      Yes, quite frugal, we have to find the balance between holiday/fun and a Vanlife lifestyle. We have a limited pot of money, we want to make it last as long as possible (so we don’t have to work!)
      Thanks for watching and for the feedback.

    Great video. Really helpful, thank you. Was particularly interested in how simple (& cheap) you said it was to take Buddy over. So, literally just one visit for health check & rabies jab (how close to travelling?) and then was it easy to find French vet for worming tablets on return? TIA

    • @Eurosully
      @Eurosully  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for watching our video. It is fairly easy with a dog. Animal heath certificate must be done within 10days of travel. Rabies I think is at least a month before - your vet will advise. Eurotunnel check in is straightforward- not done ferry but everyone says it is too and they have a specific pet area once onboard. We found the French vet off a Facebook post but it’s website was easy to follow and looks like they have sussed out the return to Uk market. We also found Vets4pets in Belgium we’re good if coming back from that direction.
      We are going to Scandinavia in sept… now that’s a whole other matter for another video lol🤨

      @@Eurosully Thanks so much for your reply, very helpful. Ooh Scandinavia - that’s another place we fancy going. I shall await the videos 😊 First is our trip to peaks, lakes & Scotland though, hopefully the midges will be gone in Sept! 🤞

    Did you have Insurance? Always found that to be quite expensive, also did it affect your house insurance as you were away more than 31 days, unless you had someone stay whilst away?

    • @Eurosully
      @Eurosully  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, had insurance, around £900 per year, quite expensive as I have no Motorhome no claims bonus. Didn’t include this in the costs as I presume everyone with a van already has it insured, and the cost can be so varied for different people, postcodes and vehicles.
      Didn’t affect house insurance as we have other family in the house.
      Thanks for watching, all feedback much appreciated.

    Hello from Australia .My wife and I are hoping to come to the Uk from April to September . I was thinking off purchasing a small motorhome as its only the two of us ,something like a Toyota Hi Ace or you may suggest other types to look at ,as we will be selling it when we return home I don’t want to spend a fortune ,again you may be able to tell me a reasonable amount to get a decent vehicle . We will be staying with family at times in the Uk and in the Netherlands but we are also looking at a similar trip like yours . Your tips and advice would be much appreciated . Regards Mal Marsden Australia

    • @Eurosully
      @Eurosully  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mal, thanks for watching our videos and for feeding back. Your plans for a big trip sound really exciting. If you are looking to buy a vehicle in the UK it will be quite costly. Since the Covid restrictions took place, motorhomes and campervans (new) became difficult to get hold of, orders were delyed and some people have been waiting for up to two years for their vehicle to be delivered by the manufacturer. This also caused an increase in the new vehicle price, some going up by over 20%.
      The knock on effect of this is that used vehicles went up in price, this has continued as new vans are still difficult to get hold of. Many people took to self build campers, but the build quaity of some of them being questionable (although many are of a really good standard too).
      I would suggest turning to TH-cam, a good channel to watch would be @TheMotorhomeMan as he regularly reviews vehicles (Campers and Motorhomes) that come into stock. You'll be able to gauge how much you will need to spend to get the specification and layout that you want. If you are looking at travel within the uk, have a look at joining a few of the many Facebook groups such as VanLife - UK or VanLifeUK or NC500 etc, there is loads of good hints and tips.
      When you decide to buy (private or from a dealer) make sure you have a comprehensive history of the vehicle, i.e. records of its annual habitation check (this check looks at the gas system, electrical system and identifies areas which may have damp or water ingress) If you look at buying a self build camper be extra careful.
      hope this helps, I'm no expeet but it is where I would start if I was in your position, I'm sure you will get loads of good advice from the social media network
      Good luck with your planning and subsequent trip.Andrew, Jane & Buddy

      The big problem for non residents is registering a vehicle in the U.K. or EU. It might be much easier to buy and register it in the name of one of your family members.

      Theoretically you can be asked to prove that you have a booking for the first night. It is one of the requirements of entering the Schengen zone.
