    Many of you are asking what we do about water. Here is an article that may offer some tips (www.rvwithtito.com/tip/camping-without-hookups#water). Also, we use a portable water container to add water to the tank when needed. We also carry about 4 gallons of fresh drinkable water inside (separate from the tank) for making coffee, drinking, etc. We typically only use water in the tank for dishes, showers, sink and toilet stuff. That way we don't have to worry about how clean it is (I don't use a filter anymore). That usually gets us by.
    When the gray water tank fills up though, we have to go find a dump station. Once your gauge reads full you can generally go a little longer. You'll know when it's maxed out when it starts to come up in your shower (the lowest point). You can always go to your RV gray water dump and fill a bucket to dump in your black tank (through the toilet). I also always try to find ways to use the bathroom elsewhere or go for a lake swim (in lieu of a shower) to save water in the RV. We mostly use paper plates to minimize washing. We also collect excess water from dishes and showering (while water is heating up etc) and dump it in the toilet. Melissa probably uses the bulk of the tank water though for short showers and other things. Overall, we conserve pretty well and can go at least 5 days. We're generally ready to move on after about 4 days in a location anyway so that works out well.

      RVwithTito a friend of ours plumbed a water pump from his gray water to the black tank since they always maxed out the gray water before the black. The added bonus was he could dump the black tank then pump the soapy gray water in it and use it to flush the tank.

    Happy for both of you. My wife and are a few months into this venture. She is not crazy about the RV life so I am trying to make her happy. Glad to hear it is possible.

      That's the only way we RV now. We've been off-grid in the RV since early Jan so far this year. Currently boondocking in Moab.

    Nice!! The fact that forks go with little if any generators running makes many of us smile!!

    Hi, thanks for the video. We’ve been full-timing for about 2 years and now that we have 4-100w panels and a 2000 watt pure sine wave inverter my wife can use her hair dryer and we can watch Netflix whenever we want for just about as long as we want. We only have two 6v batteries [wired in series] and the work well. Our 30’ Airstream is REAL comfortable when we are out without anyone around. I love to boondock and dry camp in parks. Your ideas have helped us get to this point. Thanks again. Happy New Year.

    We've been off grid in our class A, 50 miles South of Orlando Florida, for 45 days now at a camping cost of about 8 cents per day. The RV has not moved an inch, love it!!

    • @RVwithTito
      @RVwithTito  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cool. Do you use a generator and A/C to keep cool? Or just solar and batteries?

    • @NomadicNative
      @NomadicNative 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      RVwithTito since arriving we've only had to use AC twice & ran the generator to do it. Solar is working well for us! 3 Lakes is a WMA. A hunting camp that requires only a $27 WMA permit to camp September thru April.

    You guys are great , I love all the info you out. We have dry camped for over 20 years in the sand dunes near Glamis and in the eastern Sierras , we bring extra water in the desert . It is way better than being side by side in a RV park.

    • @RVwithTito
      @RVwithTito  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure. It's the only way to go. We're off-grid 100% of the time now in our class A.

    We started out boondocking in 2003 , when there wasn’t LifePo4 s or Solar power . An interesting time , like you guys , trying to figure out how to power and conserve energy . Then we only had heavy duty truck batteries . These only lasted one year in severe use . How things have moved on . Now I am planning our next RV , to have 1500 watts of Solar , 1000 Amp Hours of LifePo4 , and large tanks .

    • @RVwithTito
      @RVwithTito  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's pretty amazing what's possible now. We're really enjoying our 1740W of solar and 810Ah of lithium in the Class A. Now with 90 gallons of water and a composting toilet it seems like we can go forever :)

    Great video. Had kind of forgotten why I wanted to boondock until I saw some of the places you stayed. I remembered that I get tired of looking at my neighbors RV. We have had some great neighbors but wouldn’t it be nice to look out and see something natural. You guys tell your story very well. I need some solar. Will probably start small and build into what we NEED. I bought two generators and have used them once. Met a guy with 2400 watts of solar and 1k ah of lithium. He ran his ac... all day! Keep them coming.

    • @RVwithTito
      @RVwithTito  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a ton of solar. He must have had a big RV. Your plan to start small is the right way to do it. It's such a custom option that it's best (and cheaper) build your system up gradually and learn along the way. I usually advise folks to start with a decent portable setup first.

    We totally agree with you guys! we have been living in our RV for about 5 months and are still trying to figure out the boondocking part of it. I feel like once we get the solar set up we will be a step closer! thanks for the inspiration

      That's great. You certainly need to be more resource conscious. But more you do it, the better it gets. Solar certainly helps, but many still use generators too.

    Brian, since I've started watching your video's I've changed out my door window which like you, I didn't like the one that came with my RV. I've replaced the base of my passenger seat with a swivel base, I've changed out all my locks and I've just ordered my first solar panel. Now, I didn't do all the work myself, my son in law and one of his neighbors changed out my window, and he installed my swivel. I di change out the locks myself. I'm still waiting for my solar panel. It should be here this week. I still have to buy cable and probably mc4 connectors and clamps, I'm really not sure what all I need yet. I'm learning and preparing for this summer's adventure. Safe travels! 😊

    awesome, you guys have so much fun on the road, thanks for all your tips, I still want to get started on solar but not sure if I am going to use it, I am like Melissa I don't camp. I got the RV to go on the road and see the sights, visit family and friends. I retire again in June and I will be on the road doing what I have wanted to do for a long time now, over a year waiting to go, can't wait.

    That has become our sentiments also! It took some time to get the wife onboard. But maybe not as much as you experienced. We both looked at it as a game that we could do together and enjoy. We are setting in a park at present in Florida. Full hookups and neighbors cheek to jowl. Warmer then home but no where near the environment that we cherish and enjoy. Am looking forward to Big Bend in a month with no hookups!!

    Terrific video guys! It is so great to see you putting another video out and I especially enjoyed this one. My wife and I purchased our Class C RV and hope to hit the road for some extensive travel when my wife retires next April. Our preference would be to boondock but as newbies it is kind of scary when you think about power and water usage. So your video helps to ease the anxiety of it all. I'm sure we'll figure it all out with experience. I just can't wait for April to get here!

    • @RVwithTito
      @RVwithTito  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great to hear you're finally getting close. It's not that scary if you start somewhere closeby for a couple days at a time. It just takes a little practice and preparation. Take time to figure out how much you use/need and plan accordingly. We don't have a large water tank (about 44 gal) but it gets us by for about a week with heavy conservation. There are lots of places to refill your water. We usually fill it back up every few days or whenever we are near a water source.

    • @rodferguson9141
      @rodferguson9141 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah water would be the only problem you have to dump it and refill it, but your generator would charge your batteries you don't need solar for that

    My wife and I do some serious back roads boondocking with a 10 ft. home built vintage style canned ham trailer pulled by a Tacoma. We carry enough drinking water for 6 days, use 3 coolers, recycle all of our ice melt water to wash with. Have no solar or generator just propane and a wood stove. Cook and heat water also with a fire pan. Dutch oven bake, use candles and head lamps and pretty much go very low tech old fashioned. We go out for a month long trip twice a year and my wife loves it. simple is where it's at.

      Yeah. Water is usually the first thing to run out. We carry a spare jug which always comes in handy. Plus we always refill, when near a water source. Alse we tend to be ready to move on after 3 or 4 days so it's always a good time to refill along the way.

    Thanks for this video. My wife and i are getting back into a RV here real soon again but this time full time. I myself like to boondock my wife not so much. She likes full hookups and the amenities that go with it. I said to her we can't afford all that so boondocking is going to have to work some of the time or even most of the time..lol So this next RV will have to be set up so she has all the amenities but not paying all the high park fees. Yes there are many benefits as she would realize over time. Also, more and more are buying RVs and filling up the RV parks these days. Plus, we've seen RV park prices increase over the last few years. Of course, free BLM sites are great. We're not full timers either, so we also enjoy staying in scenic National and State parks in the no-hookup sites for $10 - $15 a night. They'll usually have a dump station, water fill up and bathrooms nearby when you need to use them. You can also get a National Park pass for the year which could save money as well.

    Y'all are an awesome couple! Thanks for sharing your stories! I'm planning a small solar/inverter set up. Already upgraded batteries. My only goal (besides just having an inverter line in the RV) is being able to run my Keurig coffee maker in the morning for that first cup. That would be "goal accomplished!" I boon dock a lot in MT and all my friends are used to running our quiet generators at some point. So small steps in a moderate system to see if I can accomplish my small wants, at a good value is the mission! So thanks for the running the wires video! Cheers! New subscriber! :)

    Its going to take some time to get the wife use to dry camping. I promised to start the generator when she needed the hair dryer. Plans in for a 400 watt solar, 300AH lithium battery system in the trailer. Alaska in 2018 and Arizona at the end of 2018. Time to start spending that retirement before I have to give it to a nursing home or my kids.

    We started off in a Kombi camper It was rough but we were young Roll forward 25 years , Now we have a class a with near everything ,I think one of the best upgrades to the RV is the satellite TV just push one button and its done , No chasing TV signals with a DTV antenna , We have 1200 watts solar and 6 125 amp AGM batteries (Going to Lifepo4 soon ) we have only been to one van park in 25 years and we lasted 2 hours , I just don't like being squished next to other vans with Kids , Dogs , Bad music Air cons running 24/7 so we hit the Australian Bush , No one for Miles Its worth every cent we have spent over the decades to get where we are now and will never change , Yes the hair dryer is a pain in the butt .
    But when you sit in a stream with a cold drink and you know there is no one around you just smile from within ,
    No amount of money can buy that feeling ,

    I ran into issues with having the gray water and black tank fill when at campgrounds with no dump. A few years back they banned macerators on boats in my state. You had to fully remove it or risk a fine. So With a special PVC fitting I converted mine into a dump pump and can now run everything through a 3/4” hose to a portable tank in the back of the pickup truck. That tank has a dump hose fitting so you just drive to a dump station and let gravity do the work. I think if I converted a plastic 55 gallon drum it would work even better. Might not be welcome in your SUV though.

    Great video. I really like the story of how you and Melissa have come to common desires.
    Question: I have noticed in previous videos that you are possibly using a Samlex inverter. Is that correct? If so, how has it been?
    We aren’t to the point of installing an inverter yet mostly because of lack of space. Through research though, the Samlex 1500 or 2000 have the footprint that can come closest to the space we have.
    We have a Samlex solar suitcase that performs pretty well. Plans in the future to install solar on rooftop with mppt charge control.
    Any comment regarding your inverter would be appreciated. Any advice regarding solar also. 😊
    Like you, we never used our microwave, so we removed it and now have that space converted into cookware storage.

    Another excellent video. My biggest concern with boondocking is the hot weather. With the wife and 2 dogs it's a big concern. So my question is do you try to chase 70 degrees or do you just run the generator when it gets above or below certain temps? The problem with that is once it gets above a certain temp it's impossible to get the temp down in an RV. Also how do you run a coffeemaker or microwave on batteries without using the gen? I agree that some of these spots are pretty awesome. However some of the BLM's are even more crowded than campgrounds with hookups. I would love to just pick up and take off in our class C,(Which is very similar to yours) and Not have to worry about finding a crowded, over priced CG. For me it adds to the adventure. For my crew it's all about stress levels increasing because of the uncertainty. What advice can you give me about getting our feet wet with boondocking?

We use just about everything except the air conditioner and microwave daily.

    What’s your water solution? Nice interview with your candid wife!

    • @RVwithTito
      @RVwithTito  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Water and tank management is the trickiest part to master. Here is an article that may offer some other tips. I use a portable water container to add water to the tank when needed. We also carry about 4 gallons of fresh drinkable water inside (separate from the tank) for making coffee, drinking, etc. We typically only use water in the tank for dishes, showers, sink and toilet stuff. That way I don't have to worry about how clean it is (I don't use a filter anymore).

    Awesome video Brian. Do you have any let's say rules for solar. Like if you have X amount of Ahr batteries you need Y amount of solar wattage to handle the charge. Or maybe a certain size inverter needs a certain amount of solar. Not sure if there any hard fast rules to go by. Kevin

    • @RVwithTito
      @RVwithTito  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes actually. The rule of thumb is to match your solar watts to your amp hours of battery capacity. In other words, you should have at least 200 watts of solar for 200 Amp hours of batteries. Then adjust your solar up based on the amount of sun in your area. I'm in the northwest, so I add another 20 percent or so. The size of your inverter should be based on your maximum concurrent AC load. The larger your battery bank, the more AC power you can sustain with your inverter. That's a start anyway. Good luck!

    • @RVwithTito
      @RVwithTito  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer not to use the generator. Plus in order to get up to a full charge, you'd have to run the generator for many many hours, not just a couple hours in the morning. Now I don't even use my generator and am considering removing it.
