The Iron Giant - What's the Difference?

  • The Iron Giant just turned 20 and its message of non-violence is just as relevant today as ever. Adapted from a 1968 Ted Hughes short novel about fear in the atomic age, director Brad Bird crafted a classic of modern animation. It's time to not be a gun and ask "What's the Difference?"

      @Sakraida82 5 ปีที่แล้ว +101

      To be honest it would have been better as a mystery too for it's main point. The fact this is a weapon from a conquering army does add other avenues and questions that can read down dark roads. Which kind of defeats the message I think. But eh.

      Sakraida82 I get where you’re coming from, but isn’t the message of the film (at least one of them) “you are who you choose to be?” Isn’t a robot built as part of a planet dominating army deciding to help instead of harm a pretty awesome example of choosing who you want to be?
      Just my take. Fantastic film either way

    • @lissy_love64
      @lissy_love64 5 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      @@isaacchura141 I agree with that arguement because by Design the iron giant is a weapon. It explains the crazy war machine it becomes toward the end of the movie and the fact that its created to destroy but instead it chooses to be something better reinforces the theme. The scene makes sense and its not overly expositional in the first place, its like 12 seconds of expositional animation if even that long

      That's probably for the best.
      I remember the book fondly and all the divergences from the text felt to me like they were just injecting the usual dumbed-down Hollywood spectacle into a fairly subtle piece of children's literature.
      It's not artless by any account however the addition of violent action sequences, the change of setting and the definitive explanation of the giant's origin all rubbed me up the wrong way.
      Maybe if I hadn't known it was an adaptation I could have appreciated the film as its own thing.

I'm at the point where I can close my eyes and describe what's happening on screen during the opening sequence, I've seen it so many damn times. I think most people who enjoy movies have that one film that they know front to back, and for me, it's this one.

    When I went to see this, i had seen everything else at the theater i wanted to see that summer. Boy oh boy, I had no idea what I was getting into. Walking out of that theater, looking at every other guy, I could tell they felt the same as I did; "What the hell just happened to me?" We looked absolutely clobbered, red eyes and all. It is definitely a "male tearjerker", much like "Gladiator" soon after. I think "The Iron Giant" is one of the most perfect movies ever made.

    I saw this movie by accident in the theater. It was a free Saturday matinee movie day sponsored for kids. I reluctantly took my kids to see it, thinking how bored out of my mind I would be watching a lame cartoon.
    By the end of the movie, I'm choked up and crying. Couldn't wait for the video to come out to buy it. I watched it again at home, marveling what a gem it was. One of the best unexpected surprises I ever experienced.
