Let them interpret the message and express it in their own delivery. They don't need to copy the original singer just so they could sing on how it was "supposed" to be sang. Each singer is unique. Just look at her eyes and the way she sang "there I was alone in the shadow/couldn't find my way." It's not an expression of the literal meaning of the lines any more than an anticipation of the next. That is why even at the first few lines you can already feel what the song is all about. Regine's voice does not sound forceful and dark (although these are not bad qualities of a voice) but rather free and open and light, which for me is more appealing for this song. I believe that rearranging, drastic key or tempo changes or even stylistic vocals like growls or whistles may add new 'flavour' to the song, but the simplicity and inexplicable charisma in Regine's phrasing, diction and solid belts make this version truly the one that you will always go back to. Either that, or I'm just really a Regine fan. :-D
