My experiences have been all positive. Staff makes an effort to know your name within a couple of days; all have been great! As for other passengers - have met Brits, Aussies, Germans - as well as majority US. Have not experienced any "snootiness" among them; many retired (it is an older crowd but generally an active group). Port excursions have been worth the costs and interesting. I intend to continue with Seabourn when they resume.

Very informative. However, one correction: gratuities are NOT included for any spa services. e.g. massages, hair cuts, facials, personal training, etc. Most group exercises (e.g. stretch, yoga, Pilates, meditation etc.) are included, and you don't need to tip for those.

    Hi, Gary,
Love your videos. I've been watching them more since we're gearing up for cruising to start again. Had seven cruises canceled over the last year, but have twelve booked over the next two years. Unfortunately, I think my Cararies cruise out of Southampton for July 2021 will be canceled soon.
Looking to set up an Asian cruise (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, etc.) for early 2023. Both Oceania (Nautica) and Seabourn (Encore) have nice 20 to 28 day itineraries. Do you have a preference to either of these. We're in our late sixties and prefer quality but familiar service. We like to get to know the staff and find conversing with staff interesting. I also prefer leaving my tux at home. Both these lines seem like a fit. What do you think?
    Thank you,
    Kevin

Keep in mind that the Venture is indeed an expedition ship, but when you take the ship to Antarctica, it is not an icebreaker. This is something they don’t advertise. As luxurious & wonderful as it is, it’s something you should keep in mind as there’s no ice shelf lodging, the Grill (Thomas Keller Restaurant is not a typical steakhouse), and there’s very sadly very little entertainment, which makes the cruise a little disappointing. There’s a particular excursion coordinator who’s got serious problems. Gratuities in the spa are supposed to be included, but on the check, there’s a space for “gratuity” which they await for you to fill out as they hover over you. Overall, Seabourn has lowered their standards. I was also turned off by the number of travel agents who went around telling everyone how they were invited on the cruise while I paid a fortune. I was cornered by a handful of travel agents who would bother me trying to get my business on future vacations.
I wish travel agents would be limited to cruises for travel agents only. It’s unfair to paying passengers.

You mentioned that Seabourne, along with Cunard, are part of the Carnival line. You could have knocked me out of my chair! Do you know how long, roughly, they have been under the Carnival umbrella? I had always mentally categorized Cunard as the best of the best with Seabourne right behind them and more active and for a slightly younger crowd. I had always considered Carnival one of the cheaper (in both price and quality) of the cruise lines. Short cruises, spring break kinds of crowds who view a cruise as a big 3-4 day Partay. Am I way off base in my own picture of these cruises? It is truly difficult to imagine a line like Carnival taking on those iconic brands and succeeding to the passengers satisfaction while still maintaining the ships to the standard luxury cruisers expect. I have never been on a Carnival Cruise, but from reading the news I had found that the more outrageous behavior was almost always on a Carnival Cruise. Also, my kids seemed to cruise out of Florida on 3 days Carnival Cruises to the Caribbean when they were in their early 20s and their judgement and priorities were remarkably elastic. Right at the age where they were celebrating their autonomy but clueless about what responsibilities came with this ‘freedom ‘. Not suggesting I had ‘bad’ kids but several of them swallowed an entire jar of Stupid on their 21st birthday. I am not trying to be negative or condescending but am baffled by this and looking to be set straight about a few things. Thanks for your consistently relevant, interesting and very good videos.

I believe Carnival Corp started their purchase of Seabourn in 1998 and by 2001 Seabourn become a subsidiary of the Carnival Corporation. Do note these companies run almost independently from each other. All Carnival Corporation cruise lines keep their unique identities and have their own CEO. By being part of a large corporation such as Carnival allows these lines to stay afloat and build more ships. A good example is Cunard, by the mid 1990s Cunard was struggling. Carnival purchased them around 1998 and enabled them to grow and build the queen mary 2 as well as their other ships. Under the Carnival Corp umbrella is Carnival, Holland, Princess, Cunard, Seabourn, AIDA, Costa, P&O Cruises, P&O Australia.

Justin Sgobbo - Thanks for the insight, I am impressed that they are able to keep their own leadership and maintain the company model. Unusual for this day and time, but smart. QUESTION: (I don't know if I should post this inquiry here or on your next live chat)
We're recent retirees and we're planning on a cruise around Japan for Oct 2025.
It's a choice between Seabourn and Regent 7Seas.
Both cruise lines seem to be premium/ way above average (we lean towards a Viking level).
It can be a little information overload.
So, at the time of this writing, comparing the 2, which in your opinion is the better (overall value)?
BTW: I'm finding not current TH-cam information on this particular ship

But gratuities and drinks outside of dinner are not included on Viking. Each of the upper-tier lines have pluses and minuses. I enjoyed the Viking river cruise I was on and haven't sailed Seabourn yet. The ultra-luxury and premium luxury lines all seem to have excellent products, at least from what I've watched in Gary's excellent reviews. It comes down to the slight differences that cater to your individual taste. Another difference is the itineraries. They all go to the same regions, but different itineraries will be longer or emphasize one country over another or have easier start and end ports for flights. Glad you enjoy Viking, Elad.

The Seaborne ship looks like a good option to add to our short list as the age range looks like our age group and I get a good overall feel. It’s lose to saga in that what’s important to us is included and what isn’t we can choose to have if we want. Regarding excursions, can you choose not to pay for an extension and just get off and wander on your own or is that not recommend? I quite like finding my own way around places and that would be cheaper, unless being taken off to a vineyard or a boat trip which of course you would pay for. Thank you again for a great video that is clear and informative.

wow. almost 200,- for a 5 h tour. I can only compare it to tours with educated guides. maybe from the universities. but I don't think, I remember any of those being that expensive when done with a travelling group.you know, those organized groups touring a region with historic or art destinations. guided by real professional guides. where the guests are often academics of that field. and a cruise ship must be considered similar I guess. all guest are a kind of group. so, that must be a way to for the cruise ship, to make some other AI offers profitable. I think, if I would be on such a cruise ship, I would only get one of the excursions. most likely on the lower side of the price range. and do the rest on my own. that way, I would have the feeling, of getting the most of it, as I am rather one of those, who cannot deal with too much AI. unlike some others I cannot consume more, than I would normally do. and I am not a thin person. so I guess, I would rather enjoy the ambient. the gratuities being included is really a good thing. that I like

Do waste you money on Oceania unless you really like bad seasick. Production show only consists of 4 people, music only play 45 minutes per day. All their money is spent on mailing advertising, 2 or 3 books per day in my mail box. Lobster is dry, tough with frozen taste. Specialty restaurants are not that good at all. Service is OK. Free wines is bad, $2.580 per bottle. I been to 250 cruises, this is the worst experience. Lots of adverting, most are paid TH-camR with free cruises, money, etc. and highly bias.. Do not believe them. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS WORTHLESS CRUISE. Small ship, Regent is the best, Vikings is second.
